My 12 year old daughter LOVES this book!! And her 10 year old sister can't wait to get her hands on it. And I am thrilled my girls have such an awesome Christian example to follow!! Thanks Sadie!!!!

The book "Live Original" by Sadie Robertson of the TV show "Duck Dynasty" was well written in its 202 pages. It's written for teens but her candid advice of standing up for what's right can be geared for adults also. Each chapter opens with a scripture verse and the end of each chapter closes with a few challenging questions. The journaling is good for discussion groups or personal reflection.

This book may seem geared towards young girls, but this 42 year old women got a lot out of it. I really think boys would like this too because the same issues cross both sexes.

I have one of these books. I have hilited and made comments in the margins. I was going to give it to my 12 year old but I wanted to keep it for my library so I ordered another one for my 12 year old and another one for my 16 year old! I definitely recommend this it is geared towards teens but I got a lot from the book myself and I am 35! I just wish I could get a signed copy!!

Very upbeat. Great quotes and perspective. She obviously leads a very blessed life which is not reality for most, but still she does show how she puts forth hard effort rather than just "enjoying the silver spoon." I gave a book as a gift to each of my daughters and suggested they read it like it was a conversation from a "big sister", which my oldest daughter especially loved.

This was a super quick read (took just over 2 hours), but FULL of great information. Although the book wasn't the "behind-the-scenes" of Duck Dynasty that I thought it would be, I actually liked it better as it is and would highly recommend it as a "to-read" for teen girls. The book is full of though-provoking questions, relevant bible verses, and seems to come straight from Sadie's heart. This book shows Sadie is a down-to-earth and sensible young lady, which is quite refreshing considering her fame and age.

My Special Needs daughter is the same age as Sadie and she loves all her books. They have been a real encouragement for my daughter as she has her daily devotions. Well written, down to earth and very real!!

Now, I will admit that I don't watch Duck Dynasty. But this family does intrigue me, and when I saw that one of the kids was coming out with a book, I was interested. I do follow Sadie on Twitter, and watch her on Dancing with the Stars. I don't know, the kids just interest me more than the adults. But this was a fresh perspective in a world where teens are finding more and more bad role models. Maybe I was just curious about how someone so young could be so well-adjusted. But Sadie really is the real deal.In yesterday's US Weekly article about Sadie, they had a chart comparing her to Kendall Jenner. While I don't believe in comparisons, this does go to show you what a positive influence Sadie is. Sadie knows that people are going to be looking up to her, and also be looking for her to slip-up, and this shines forth in her words. Sadie's had her share of trials, but she keeps her head up. While some might think it isn't possible for someone to seem so... happy and unbothered, Sadie lets God and her faith shine through.The writing seemed a bit simple, although she's only 17. But the words were genuine and heartfelt. Sadie talks about issues that all girls/teens go through, but she doesn't do so in a preachy way. She talks straight from the heart. But she also does so with humor. I enjoyed the personal anecdotes and learning more about the other Duck Dynasty stars.Even though she's younger than me, I think Sadie is a great role model, and this shows in the book. She speaks genuinely, from her heart, and with faith. I think this is a book that all teen girls need to read.

It was a good read - at times, a bit strange, but also really interesting - i had a hard time putting the book down. It gave me a better understanding behind the knights of the round table, and while what has become legend and explained in symbol can still be found today, the way the stories are told are somewhat too symbolic/obscure to be truly well understood, and may also have been tempered/altered with. A good read nonetheless, and what I was interested at the time I read this book, over 10 years ago.

This is a heavily Christianized version of the famous Grail legend. I say that because the Quest of the Holy Grail was written about by many throughout the ages - and this version is probably the most distant from the Celtic pagan tradition. The commentary and notes are excellent - and Pauline Matarasso's insight into the theology and symbolism of the work isextremely entertaining and enlightening. Her theory that the book may have been written by a Cistercian monk based on clues in the text is also interesting given the number of scriptural references and mystical overtones. One of the best of its kind.

This book is special for me.Now I feel like Galahad, Perceval and Bors would always stay in my heart.Being part of a busy everyday city life this book carries you away from it, somewhere very far away, and somewhere within you.The way heroes of this book act while facing their trials is very very inspiring and is presented in such a way that you question yourself: "How can it be otherwise?"For those who are interested to understand the Bible on a deeper level, it does explain some of the Christian symbols and parables.Fantastic book, I would give more than 5 stars, but unfortunately that's not an option.

This is a classic story of the Knights of the Round Table and the quest for the Holy Grail. It has religous overtones and the story is well wrtten. I would reccomend this book.

This wonderful work--a medieval religious guide hidden as an Arthurian romance--hits all the right buttons: morality stories, lessons on good triumphing against great odds, and a firm religiosity focusing on faith and works (yes, it would be considered Catholic nowadays, but that was the only game in town in the 13th c.). The moral that's stuck with me is that how Lancelot was a good knight, but could have been so much better had he stuck to his ideals.I've read this to 7-9 y.o.'s in a summer camp and they loved it. I've assigned it to undergrads and they universally thought it was a wonderful read. If you have a teen or pre-teen who is into Harry Potter, throw this at him/her, along with Cretien de Troyes.One more thing--maybe a quibble, but some reviewers have called this a novel. It's not. The novel did not come into existence as a separate literary form until much later. The big difference is that the romance is based on the oral and literary traditions of previous centuries that extend back hundreds of years, while the novel was something new--new characters, new scenarios, new settings. Also, while "fictional" to us, Arthurian material wasn't necessary so at the time works like the Quest were written. Contemporaries believed that maybe parts were embellished, but the figures were real.

Bryan O'Malley's run pokes fun at the banalities of life while making you feel like a twenty something kid again. The art is charming and original (even if you read Japanese comics). The diverse cast of characters are unique archetypes that keep you hoping they will come back in every panel. May slightly confuse those unfamiliar with videogame pop-culture, but not enough to distract one from the story. My wife especially loved the interlude short stories. Scott Pilgrim will leave you wishing for more once you've completed this six volume series.

I purchased this as an e-book, so understand that everything I reference is from reading this on a 10" tablet.I got my son hooked on Scott Pilgrim before the movie came out. He's worn out his original set of books. When I saw the color versions available and that it was available as an e-book, I jumped on the chance. The art jumps off the page in the bigger format (thanks to the tablet's screen being larger than the original books), the colors are vibrant and well-done, and it feels like reading the series again for the first time.The story itself is rich, complex, and for being such a fantastic subject, very realistic when it comes to its characterizations.I can't wait until the rest of the volumes are available in color!

This is where it begins to get hilarious and in-depth. You find out more about each character as their development begins to flourish, and at the same time it enables one to focus on many characters, opening up subplots revolving around The Band, Knives, and Scott's new gf. It feels real in certain elements of realistic relationships and at the same time it still utilizes fantasy elements to give more depth to a decent story.

Leveled up and now I'm here at volume 2. Our protagonist Scott Pilgrim is continuing on his journey battling Ramona's evil ex boyfriends, being in a band, being in a relationship and not having a job. He's pretty much living the typical life of your average 23 yr old Canadian slacker be it being pummeled by a movie star evil ex and then daring him into performing a skateboard stunt or having his heart strings tugged on by the imminent return of the ex that broke his heart and went on to become a rock star. Scott Pilgrim is back and he's still unemployed and hilarious as ever. The writing is just as hilarious as the first you won't regret reading it at all. I was happy to read volume 2 it kept the same levity of the first volume and had absolutely no drawbacks as far as I'm concerned, if you want a fun read then read it, if not don't. See you at volume 3 slackers!*Also on a side note for parents who are worried about their child reading this book there is no drugs, sex, or profanity to worry about.

Being honest, I can't say that I like the color versions of Scott Pilgrim better than the original black and white. There was something a bit bleak and depressing about the black and white that suited this love story well. Combine that with the fact that it takes place in Canada, and you can call the original artwork appropriately barren. However, if you've already read the originals and then saw the movie, you'll have a new found appreciation for the new hardback color editions of O'Malley's work. It's like the original art was melded with the adapted film and they make for a very cool hybrid.

I had to see what's with these books after I seen the movie. The movie just exploded with originality and style. Then I found they were based on graphic novels of a Bill O Maley. After reading the first scott pilgrim one I was naturally curious and to see how they measured to the movie. After reading the first two book I automatically knew that this Bill O Maley hit it right on the button. If you into comics, then you love this. If you into magna style books.. you still love this. Its very rare for something like this to be popular as it is now. I wish I knew bout these in high school.. but better late than never. The story is funny, the script dialogue is really natural.. it makes you get interested in these fictional characters. Even the way its looks.. a simple design of characters but with slight anime/magna influenced. If you seen the movie it still worth to get these as they go into the world of story further than it does in the movie. If you never seen the movie I really recommend to get these books then watch the movie. Either way if you pick up this book there very good chance that you wont put it down til you done with it. As fellow comic writer and fan I highly recommend this for anyone even remotely interested in this crazy world of video games, rock indie music, 20' s somethings weird olds, and the old factor of love conquers all in a very new aspect point of view. PICK IT UP! p.s. the i played the game too.. triple hit this franchise has become!

I read the original black and white series years ago and did not think I would like the color version. However this is a great collection to have and I am enjoying rereading it all over again

Gilligan has found that men and women use fundamentally different approaches when it comes to morality, and since men have dominated the discussion of moral theory, women's perspective is often considered to be undeveloped and unsophisticated. She summarizes the male vs. female approach to morality by saying that male morality has a “justice orientation,” and that female morality has a “responsibility orientation.” She outlines 3 stages in moral development: a selfish stage, a belief in conventional morality, and a post-conventional stage. This illustrates a progression from selfish, to social, to principled morality. The first stage is a woman’s orientation towards individual survival, where the self is the sole object of concern. At the second stage, the main concern is that goodness is equated with self-sacrifice. This level is where a woman adopts societal values and social membership. The third stage is the transition from goodness to truth. The needs of the self must be deliberately uncovered, and as they are uncovered, the woman begins to consider the consequences of these needs on the self and the social environment in which the self lives.I can see how this theory would be useful in terms of gender equality some decades ago, because it acknowledges that moral development is different for women than it is for men. There is an association between moral orientation and gender; women focus on care dilemmas and men focus on justice dilemmas. Sensitivity to others leads women to "`include in their judgment other points of view." The psychology of women is described as distinctive in its orientation toward relationships, which implies that women have different priorities than men. Therefore, judging the moral development of women on theories that were developed by observing men, fail to recognize those instances when women prioritize interpersonal connectedness, care, sensitivity, and responsibility to people. When these priorities are stacked up against the male tendency to organize social relationships in a hierarchical order and subscribe to a morality of rights, women are often found lacking, instead of simply different.However, there are many downsides to this theory in current political environment. Linking women with caring can, and has, promoted the view that women are actually in charge of caring. In certain instances, it has even been linked to the idea that women should care no matter the cost to themselves. It has made an expectancy of the “emotional work” that women do in their homes, communities, and work places. Worse, it has assumed that this “emotional work” is something that comes naturally to women, when it is something that, arguably, needs to be learned, and is not present in all women just by nature of their gender or biology. As much as Gilligan condemns the work of Freud and Erikson by their focus on males instead of humans in general, the participants of her research are limited to mostly white, middle class children and adults. She may take the qualities that have been, in the past, recognized as female weaknesses, and present them as human strengths, but her theory still seems to follows the stereotype of women as nurturing and men as logical. While I found the book fascinating, I still hold that men and women are more similar than different in their personalities, and that the most obvious differences are due to culture, and how each sex is socialized in childhood, rather than any biological propensity for justice, care, or responsibility for other people.

Gilligan's seminal work is a must read for insight into feminist theory. Unfortunately, the negative review I read regarding the criticism that the book is male-bashing is disingenuous. What Gilligan's argument suggests is that women speak in a different voice than men because of cultural and societal influences and expectations. She does posit that masculine characteristics have been detrimental to many aspects of human connectedness and relationships.

I didn't think I would learn anything new but it was revelationary. My definition of logic completely changed after this. It's beautifully written and calls for a combination of both masculine and feminine approaches to justice and judgment. A classic!

Gilligan's book is now dated in some ways, even with her added "letter to the reader". However it was ground-shaking when it was published and it remains an important book describing psychological and ethical issues that remain salient in our culture decades later. Many of these issues directly affect women, young or old, but many also affect men, and men and women in relationship.I have used this book over the course of a couple of decades in teaching both social psychology and ethics, for it continues to have a strong dual relevance. Questions regarding the differential psychology of men and women remain unanswered for the most part, often unspoken, as men assume their route to and definition of psychological maturity and health apply equally to women, and women tacitly and too often unconsciously let men speak for them. In ethics, what is here called the "ethic of care" has gradually become more prominent in the writing of feminist ethicists, but it has older roots, including the teaching and writing of H. Richard Niebuhr and, probably, the true ethics behind the Christian gospel. Nevertheless this school of ethics continues to be adumbrated by Aristotelian and Kantian models, both valid in their own spheres, and Gilligan's exposition remains one of the important modern anchors of this alternative perspective.Too many women today remain subordinated in a culturally male-dominated perspective when it comes to their own self-assessment and self-understanding. Too many men similarly remain captured by their own individualistic, emotionally-suppressed, and justice-oriented (cf. Kohlberg, Gilligan's teacher) stereotypes, all of which inhibit emotional, relational, and ethical potential. And, of course, such culturally-imposed blinders, worn by professionals as well as lay people, have impacts that are social and political in addition to individual.For all these reasons, and despite previously-published criticism of her psychological research as well as her ethical discussion, men as well as women should continue to read this book and to discuss it among themselves.

This book is a classic, of which, in my elderly ignorance I was unaware. Carol Gilligan was the first female philosopher to be taken seriously, the first to introduce the possibility that women are as valuable as men, albeit different, the first in a series of writers to examine a new ethic - Care Ethics. A must read!!
