I like reading this authors books but I don’t think I’ll buy more. It’ll just be a library thing. The reason I say this is she has a good style and interesting characters. Her books start out strongly with great storylines but then they just fade off. The exception to this is The Cellar which I do recommend!This particular book started out well and I was intrigued. Even had an interesting twist as far as the culprit. The issue I had is I felt like it went from let’s figure out who did this to oh it’s this person. No hints no clues no mystery. Some of it is just down right unbelievable as far as how the characters behave which is always an issue for me. Push the envelope of reality but don’t break it.Other issue I had was it was like this book couldn’t decide who its audience was. It started out as a sort of teen mystery/suspense then switched to romance and then sort of threw an ending at you. It just needed a bit more cohesiveness to it and the characters needed a bit more depth to make you wonder more.

I'm not sure why this book has received so many negative reviews, I loved it! I only read thrillers, murder mysteries, "who dun it", etc type of books and this book fit the bill so well. I got the book and was finished within 2 days, always makes me sad when I get so invested in a good book and then finish it. It was interesting from the get go, but I'm not surprised because I love this author. I understand some users were upset with the ending, but that's how move endings end too.. makes you want more and that's the whole point. I'm 24 and loved it, so I recommend it for anyone!

After reading the synopsis, of course I picked this book up. But my enthusiasm stopped there. I was thoroughly disappointed. The characters were dull and unlovable (minus the few times we meet "mum" who made me laugh). I may be 24, but my teenage years weren't that long ago and the dialogue between these 18-20 year olds was completely unrealistic. I found myself shaking my head and rolling my eyes too often. They were very inconsistent in their thoughts and conversations. And the main character was obnoxiously weak and pathetically whiny- I found myself wanting to seriously knock some sense into her. The book also had a lot of inconsistencies about the characters backgrounds and prior actions.So yes, I finished this book; but that's because I'm completely Type A and had to. But I'm glad I did, seeing as the last 3 chapters were the only interesting part of the entire book... minus the cliff-hanger end of course. I mean, really? Can you be anymore soap opera dramatic? Major eye roll.

Terrible. Awful. Surface level. No depth of character. YA literature can be amazing. This is so bad, I cannot imagine a teen enjoying it. How did this even get published?

Natasha Preston is amazing- I wish I could meet her in person! This is the second book I have read and they are absolutely breathtaking!Keep up the good work and looking forward to reading other novels by her!P.s. Not just about the author, but this book is stunning, thrilling, and descriptive! I LOVE IT!

I really enjoyed Preston's book The Cellar so I tried this one, it was a total let down. Unrealistic and amateur. Very disappointed.

You know those books that try to hard to be twisty? This is one of them. It started off ok then went downhill real quick. There were conflicting details and way too much going on at the same time. I have to say I'm disappointed because I really liked "The Cellar" but this was not a smooth read at all and the ending was ridiculous. I feel bad tearing into an author's work like this because it takes a lot to put out something you've created but in my opinion this was not her best work.

Okay, so I’ve read awake and the cellar by this author and both were fantastic! So when I saw this book I had to get it ASAP. However I didn’t read reviews before buying. Big mistake.First off, I was about 12-14% through the book and NOTHING had happened! The rest of the book was a whine fest by the main character with no clues given as to who did it. There was absolutely no plot at all. By the way, the detective in this book was portrayed horribly and I wish he wasn’t portrayed as an ass. He could have been a great character addition to this book.Anyways, fast forward to 4 hours of my life gone by choosing to read this book just to have a TERRIBLE ending!! She started to leave it off on a good note (the ending still wasn’t logical or believable but whatever) and BOOM! Ruining it and left it on a cliff hanger type moment. SO dumb. I don’t think I’ve been this dissapointed in a book for a LONG time. I would have given it zero stars if I could.If you want a great thriller/suspense/horror book to read, check out- A sound in the dark by Kyle Romines.

John von Neumann (1903-1957) was one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century and a pioneering figure in computer science. The first good thing: it is a joy to read, like sipping hot chocolate, warm and sweet and goes down easy. In this tumultuous time we're living in, that goes a LONG way; it is pure comfort reading. The writing is funny and effortless. I never wanted to stop reading, and I felt satisfied when it was done.The second good thing is how much I enjoyed reading a book with two professionally accomplished leads. They both have challenging careers, and they both care about their work and are good at it. We see both of them in professional settings, thinking about their work, stressing about things that matter. Alexa is trying to fund an arts program for at-risk teenagers, and Drew has a kid who's not recovering well after surgery. They also both have broad social circles filled with interesting, good people. I really enjoyed reading a book in which the characters are essentially all role models. Alexa in particular is a well drawn character, with relatable insecurities and a sharp, funny way of looking at the world. Drew is a bit more generic, but he's still a good guy.And this brings me to the criticism -- there isn't any real conflict. Drew is commitment phobic, and tends to dump women after a few months; and Alexa is worried about getting attached to him. But this doesn't ever go anywhere. I always find it irritating when the big conflict of the book could be resolved if either character would just talk to the other one. What's a little stranger is that there is potential for real conflict here. Alexa is black and Drew is white, and beyond that, Ms. Mallory does talk about the white privilege that Drew enjoys, and there is one instance where he makes a somewhat uninformed remark about her youth program. I'm curious why she didn't build more conflict around that -- not around racial issues, particularly; I liked that they were inter-racial. But why not build conflict that is more original and specific to who these people are, and the work they do? At one point Ms. Mallory mentions in passing that they have to learn how to adapt to two difficult and challenging careers; that is also an interesting conflict, rarely explored, and these are two characters who could handle it.There's part of me that enjoyed a book in which nothing bad happens, but it also was a little odd that this is a book in which nothing much happens: two attractive, likable, accomplished people meet, fall in love, and.... the end, basically!All that being said -- it was warm, and sweet, and comforting, and funny, and I'm on board for all of that. A good read that deserves to be read.(And P.S. just to back up what Roxane Gay said in her 5-star review: it is very funny how much they ate. I guess since they weren't fighting, and they couldn't have sex ALL the time, they needed something else to do, so they ate constantly -- donuts, waffles, burgers, burritos, more donuts, more donuts. It was kind of hysterical.)

I wanted to love it. The two leads have real jobs and each has a small circle of friends. But there was no oomph to the plot. I felt like the characters were just spinning their wheels until the inevitable happy ending. There wasn't even a good sense of place. San Francisco should be a good setting but this was the most generic version of SF.

Fun, frothy rom-com read that would make a delightful movie. (Admit I've been dream casting it in my head ever since I finished reading it. Think I mentally settled on Chris Pine and Nicole Beharie for the leads. Make it happen, Hollywood!)From the moment Alexa and Drew meet cute in a stuck elevator and she agrees to be his wedding date for the weekend, sparks fly between the poised political operative and hunky pediatrician. As their cross-California romance goes from faux to fabulous, the two see if there's more to their relationship than just a couple wild weekends.Devoured this on vacation and it's the perfect beach read. Smart, funny, a little bit sexy (but not graphic), and just a truly delightful summer, or anytime, read. And while it's undeniably light reading, it also has stuck with me long after most modern romances have totally faded from memory. Jasmine Guillory is a true find and I can't wait to read what she has coming out next. (It's THE PROPOSAL, another fun-as-heck sounding romance, which I've already pre-ordered.)

It wasn't.The two characters were mildly interesting, but their "relationship development" was a span of 2 months of weekend sex trips. It only bothered me because in the "sample" and even the build up of the wedding, there was such promise of a cute story, but then you got past their first hookup and it was like the author didn't know what else to do besides have them bone down for 75% of the book.Also, the text fighting and juvenile fighting packed depth and believability to the romatic notion that these two characters would be together.

I purchased the book expecting this to be something like a Stephen Colbert book where the book focuses on the character with some facts trickled in. However, the book is pretty much the opposite. The book is large amounts of information, with very little "Saul" personality trickled in.

"Make the check out to Ice Station Zebra, strictly for tax purposes I assure you..."Saul doles out his folksy wisdom from down on the farm, or something to that effect, in this novel. It's filled with hilarious lines and "how to's" on how not to wind up in the slammer. Written from the perspective of Saul dictating to a ghostwriter, you get the image in your head that Saul is sitting down, legs up on a electric ankle massage machine sipping vodka and doling out all those little nuggets of wisdom.Enjoy this book for what it is and you'll enjoy it for a dive into more Saul and his sense of humor.If you're not a Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul fan then I'd say steer clear. Most of this won't really seem like it has a huge point.Good read none the less, just not as box checking for those not into the fandom.

This book is absolutely priceless, especially for all the fans of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad. It reads very easy, throws in great gab about how to do this and how to do that, and it makes the judicial system out to be a joke in this country, of which we all know it is. Real life pointers make it a smooth read and I am very satifisied with it!

Funny and worth it for any show fan. Will be shown prominently in the office!

I was given this “La Bella Vita: Daily Inspiration from Italy” as a gift. I fell in love with it and purchased 3 to give as gifts. I wanted to share these beautiful and informative devotionals with family members. If you have ever been to Italy then, like me, you love the country, its history and its people. Helen Ruchti has combined her experiences from living there as missionaries with her Biblical knowledge and created meaningful and inspirational devotionals. I have read through the book several times and still marvel at the information she pens on each page. Besides being a wonderful devotional, her book also teaches you so much about the Italian way of life, its art and artists and even about its amazing food. You don't have to read it just one day at a time. You can sit and read several pages as you would any book you love. I highly recommend “La Bella Vita”, the Beautiful Life!

In the late 1960's I actually had the pleasure of working in Italy with author Helen Ruchti and her late husband affectionately called "Dub." I was working as a young 2-year missionary assistant in Turin (Torino) while the Ruchtis were in the middle of their 25 year career in Rome. Fortunately we had enough connection that I got to know and so greatly appreciate the Ruchtis and the work they were doing in the "Eternal City." I was convinced then, and remain convinced now, that Helen and Dub knew as much or more about Rome, Italy, than any Roman mayor or Pope! They completely emersed themselves in "all things Rome" (and "all things Italian"). When I heard about this book I assumed it was going to be more of a Bible study kind of heavy devotional book. I was delighted to see that it is a book of faith and inspiration, but like an artist Helen paints small one-page paintings of the Italy that she so loves. The graphics and general layout of the book are simply lovely, conjuring up sensations from "Bella Italia." I will be delighted to give this beautiful work as gifts. Each page (day) there is a Scripture verse and one-sentence prayer at the end. But the meat of the daily thought is a beautiful word picture of one of the endless gems that make up the wonderful country of Italy.....gems remembered and described as only Helen Ruchti could do. I bought four (4) books to give as gifts. Having read it now I am ordering many more. I cannot imagine anyone describing the land she loves so much (and I love, too) in any more compelling way. Dear Helen did and exquisite job. While bringing me "Inspiration," I now have a tremendous urge to grab an airline ticket and once again revisit glorious Italy. For anyone who dreams of knowing Italy or anyone who dreams of returning I highly recommend this fine, new, inspirational book.
