Lexi Harris lives in the village of Near. Secluded in the vast stretches of the moor, Near and its residents live a quiet, if mundane, existence. That is until a strange, ethereal boy arrives in town. As young children begin to go missing in the middle of the night, the outsider is blamed, but Lexi is convinced a dark, older, more nefarious entity is behind the disappearances: The Near Witch. A story filled with magic, love, and heart, VE Schwab's THE NEAR WITCH is an absolutely beautiful read.I will always freely admit i am a massive VE Schwab fan. THE NEAR WITCH seems different than her other works. As her first novel, THE NEAR WITCH is smaller, a more intimate story. Her characters don't quite have the complexity she is now known for, but you can see the beginnings of everything to come. Lexi is stubborn and filled with angst and conviction. She's the character you want to root for. Cole's mystery is what seems compelling. The love story is alright, but it is secondary to the overall conflict. There are many themes throughout: family, love, acceptance, isolation. Everything is brought together well but unexceptionally. What truly sets this book apart is the absolutely gorgeous writing and amazing setting/atmosphere. Schwab has a lyrical storytelling quality that makes you feel the grass of the moors at your feet, see the wind blown trees, and connect with the natural rhythm and beauty of Near just like Lexi does. This has become one of my favorite books for the writing alone.THE NEAR WITCH is one of those hauntingly beautiful books you should crack open on a blustery, rainy night. It is subtle, quiet, and unimposing, but settles around you like a comfortable blanket. There is something familiar in the tale of witches and young love that makes this simple story a treat to experience. I have a feeling I'm going to read this book again and again.

Great ‏‏â€Å½

I opened this gorgeous book, read the first paragraph, and, friends, I’m not exaggerating when I tell you I gave the loudest, most wistful sigh. I was home. Victoria’s writing was just as gorgeous then as it is now, and frankly, if you don’t like rambling “gush” reviews, you might as well close this now, because I just want to get emotional and cry at you all a little over how much this story meant to me.First, this setting? Flawlessly atmospheric. Never once does the plot or character development suffer for the sake of setting, but I felt so sucked into the town of Near that I could practically smell and feel and hear the moor, right here. I adored every moment well-spent on the grassy hills, the rain, the stones under Lexi’s feel, the old hut the Sisters lived in; it was all so wonderful and poetic. But when I say this story meant something to me personally, friends, I’m talking about the incredible care Victoria took while crafting these witches. If you ask any pagan or craft-practicing person, they’ll tell you that we’re not used to being painted in such a nuanced light, but here, that’s what I got, and it was wonderful. Now, I won’t spoil the story by saying if the witches are good or bad, or both, but what I’ll say is that there’s a pair of characters—two elderly sisters, who the town is convinced are old witches with no access to the powers of their youth—and they meant everything to me. I’m a sucker for the elderly mentor characters, regardless, but these women, despite being spurned by the town of Near for simply existing, spend their time crafting wards and blessings for the people who abuse them, and something about that just made me downright emotional. The idea that they could be so complex, and that they would continue to take care of people who didn’t deserve their empathy—that’s everything I didn’t know I needed from Magda and Dreska. The witches weren’t the only characters I adored, though; Lexi and Cole are both incredible in their own rights, but there were quiet, secret, ordinary heroes, too, in Lexi’s mother and her late father. I loved the stories from her dad, and I was cheering every time her mother stepped up to help her or protect her.I just fell so ridiculously in love with so many of the citizens of Near, just like I always do with V’s characters, and I never wanted to leave them. I feel like The Near Witch is the sort of story I’m going to reach for over and over again, for years to come. It is the most gorgeous kind of fairytale, yet it feels like the kind of thing that’s just odd enough to be real, and I mean it when I tell you that this was easily one of the best books I’ve read all year, and will undoubtedly go down as one of my favorite books, period.

I am enormously impressed that this novel was Victoria Schwab's debut. No wonder she's been so successful since. This is one gifted, wildly creative, compelling author.Awaiting the reader: a three-dimensional, compelling protagonist and other well-drawn characters; deft world building; various YA elements; and enough suspense that I (a wimp in that regard) had to stop reading every couple of pages, toward the end, and go do something less exciting before I could come back and read some more.Oh, and in reference to the Acknowledgments: when is Schwab going to keep her promise and write that menopausal art school coven book? I want to read it!

This review is for the audio narration only, not the story or writing. I liked her accent but she had no intonation. She was reading each sentence like a line on a list, I could barely get through 10 minutes and had to return it. I will just read this on my own, because the story seemed interesting. Is disappointing that they didn’t choose a better narrator.

Loved this book. Reminds me of Neil Gaiman.

An excellent early book by a wonderful writer. Sure, for someone familiar with her work, it is, at some points, apparent that this *was* her first published piece and so perhaps not as complex and refined as her others, HOWEVER, that IN NO WAY detracts from the overall quality of this book. It is a well-written story with engaging characters and imagery themed to the dull earthy greys and browns of the moor. Such a unique story! Schwab has always had the gift to transport readers to another world.

Sabrina, by Nick Drnaso

Review

"Nick Drnaso's Sabrina is the best book―in any medium―I have read about our current moment. It is a masterpiece, beautifully written and drawn, possessing all the political power of polemic and yet simultaneously all the delicacy of truly great art. It scared me. I loved it."―Zadie Smith "Sabrina is startling. Drnaso's formal ingenuity and confidence is matched by the acuity and depth of the story's awareness of who and where we are right now."―Jonathan Lethem"Nick Drnaso is one of the most ambitious, singular cartoonists to emerge in recent years, and his dedication to novelistic fiction is an inspiration. Incisive, chilling, and completely unpredictable, Sabrina demonstrates the inexplicable power of comics at their best."―Adrian Tomine “[Sabrina] is a Midwestern gothic tale for our times… A shattering work of art.”―The New York Times 100 Notable Books of the Year“Sabrina is not only a step forward for comic strip literary fiction, but a book that shows, as well as tells, the slippery horrors of our post-truth reality.”―The Guardian Best Books of 2018“It's a chilling distillation of the way the world feels nowadays.”―NPR’s Best Books of 2018"Drnaso’s simple, rigid drawings capture the bleak blankness of much contemporary life, anomie hovering over almost every interaction, both real and virtual... [Sabrina] leaves the audience holding its breath."―Kathleen Rooney, The Chicago Tribune

#9,473 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

No documentary, mockumentary, youtube clip, news special, social media post, film, book, podcast, or article has ever captured the complexity of media and humanity in 21st century America quite so lucidly as this graphic novel (so far). Drnaso is giving us a mirror to stare at, which is frightening but also difficult to turn away from.

Drnaso works like a filmmaker at the top of his game, imbuing landscape and deep-focus space with longing, emptiness and dread. At times, Sabrina seems a modern reconfiguration of The Searchers — updating John Ford’s combination of American myth, purity and paranoia to the present moment. Negative reviewers here seem to be missing the point of Drnaso's "flat" style. It forces the reader to look, and look, and look -- is there something I'm missing in this panel? A detail or pattern I've overlooked? Is that person to be trusted or not? Is that a man, a woman, another category? The cumulative effect is to cultivate empathy -- but also paranoia and suspicion, which replicates elegantly both what we'd like to be and what we've become. For me, the impact was disturbing and also strangely redemptive.

This is the first graphic novel I've ever purchased. I've read a few over the years, at the library, but I've never bought one. I bought Sabrina because I read that it was the first graphic novel ever to make the long list of the Man Booker Prize (the short list will be announced Sept. 20). Here's a good description (and part plug) of the book, stolen from themanbookerprize.com: Where is Sabrina? The answer is hidden on a videotape, a tape which is en route to several news outlets, and about to go viral. Sabrina is the story of what happens when an intimate, ‘everyday’ tragedy collides with the appetites of the 24-hour news cycle; when somebody’s lived trauma becomes another person’s gossip; when it becomes fodder for social media, fake news, conspiracy theorists, maniacs, the bored. What's brilliant about Sabrina and probably other graphic novels is that it does things that can't be done on film or in prose. (If you're watching a movie and it shows a lot of text on a computer screen, you're not going to have good things to say about that movie.) Speaking of the text on computer screens, the one false note in Sabrina is that the author has conspiracy buff nut jobs (a redundancy) writing perfect English in their posts, with proper capitalization and punctuation. Not that I look at that sort of thing much, but from what I've seen of such writing (Trump's tweets, e.g.) I can tell you this: they don't write that well. I guess the book is in high demand and that the publishers didn't anticipate that because it took weeks to get it delivered. It was expensive, too, and that's a qualm I had with it. I understand that printing an entire book in color cost more than just black text on paper, but Sabrina is not printed with rich inks on glossy paper, nor should it be—being slick in any way would detract from its message. Still, the $27 price point was high for a book that you're going to finish in under two hours. I can't recommend buying it at that price unless you're going to share it with others.

Sabrina is, of course, the first picture book to be nominated for the Booker prize. This will prove a disservice to the medium; surely there were twenty or fifty more worthy works published, and this certainly didn't motivate me to seek out another one.The art, I hope, is not representative. It's ugly, it adds little, all the characters look the same. Surely there's a more innovative way to represent alienation than a lonely Hardee's on the side of the road. If that's somehow the point, the point is trite. We get it.The plot also doubtlessly caught the committee's eye. Chicagoland's five hundred seventy-eighth homicide of the year reunites two former pals, and they eat burgers and drink microbrews together, but alone, because that's the kind of place America is nowadays. I was shocked to find diners empty and video game lobbies full.Looming large over the plot is Alex Jones, one of the USA's most respected public intellectuals. One hardly needs explain how Jones has drawn acclaim far and wide for his insights on national affairs. To this point, few have been willing to stand up to Jones's movement, but Drnaso and the Booker committee make a powerful case that society may not benefit if he remains unchecked. This brave, necessary act of punching up against people who listen to Infowars leads me to round up to two stars.

On the positive side, I understand the praise for the cinematic approach to storytelling. The way the book shows the awkwardness of human interactions and the bleakness of the suburban landscape is very well done.Opposite that, my disppointment. It's hard to express my take on this book without spoiling the story for other readers. I'll say that I found the arc of the story and especially the resolution of the mystery very unsatisfying.

Sabrina is unnerving, distressing subtle, and humane. I couldn’t put it down. With a story that explores real human tragedy, the horrifying implications of extremist conspiracy theories, and the troubled lives of everyday people, this graphic novel is a compelling masterpiece.

Keegan’s book deals with military intelligence, as distinguished from espionage: little glamour is involved, as these stories are wartime experiences. John Keegan was a military historian. His eight chapters, mostly war stories, provide meaningful lessons about types of military intelligence, where it can be successfully applied, and how it is limited. The book is well organized. Keegan prefaces each episode with rich background, so that the main activities are clearly understood in context. The background is itself, a short history lesson. Keegan then describes the type of intelligence featured and how it was applied. At the episode’s conclusion, Keegan analyzes the value of the intelligence in that particular situation.Keegan’s episodes span across history from Napoleonic times through World War II, revealing the wide applicability of his lessons. Keegan then adds a chapter on intelligence since World War II. He concludes with an overall analysis on the value of military intelligence.Surprisingly, Keegan concludes that in war, intelligence often fails its expectations. Information about the enemy, his location, and his plans is often either difficult to obtain, misleading or misinterpreted, or less important than the forces being employed. Even in the Battle of Midway, a near-perfect case where broken codes revealed the Japanese fleet’s intentions, the ultimate victory owed much to chance. Not everyone will be tolerant with Keegan’s thorough development of his episodes, but few will be disappointed with his attention to detail. His lessons are instructive and his revelations bring his scenes to life.

As a history major who served for 30 years as a field artillery with 12 years overseas including a combat tour in Vietnam, I have read and enjoyed several of John Keegan's books. As a senior officer, I had tours of duty as defense attaché at our embassies in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and New Delhi, India. I thus have some idea as to how information is acquired and processed into actionable intelligence. Following my Army career, I taught high history for 13 years including a course on Military History. The first eight chapters, including Napoleon, Stonewall Jackson, wireless in World War I, and four examples from World War II, were insightful concerning how intelligence has been collected, used, and misused. As an American, I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Jackson and Midway. The Epilogue, "Military Intelligence Since 1945," seemed rushed, as though the author was under pressure to quickly complete the book and turn it over to the publisher. The coverage of the Falkland War deserved its own chapter. Since Al-Qaeda was included in the title of this book, I was disappointed that it only received two pages in the Epilogue. Perhaps, the author was trying to make the book more relevant to today's reader with the title. The Conclusion, "The Value of Military Intelligence," was too long and seemed a bit pedantic in comparison with the rest of the book."Intelligence in War" deserves a place in the library of serious students of military history.

This is a very diffuse book taking far too much verbiage to make the authors point. The admiral nelson Mediterranean debacle made a point but it should have been made in a few pages. Likewise Stonewall's valley adventures could have occupied <¼ the space to the advantage of the book. ( However, I must say that this is one of the best accounts of the campaign I have encountered.) The entire book would be much better if it was more to the point and less wordy. He left out Yardley's contribution and Hoover's reaction which had major consequences. He deals only consequently with the mideast post the Gulf War and he leaves out the impact of modern real time intelligence. His point that intelligence is a tool and not a decisive victory is well made. As is his secondary point that covert action needs to be separated from intelligence gathering.

Sir John Keegan, the defense editor for "The Daily Telegraph" and one of the foremost military historians writing in English today, has turned his attention to an important but regularly overlooked topic--the role of military intelligence in combat operations. He argues that political intelligence is an ancient craft that goes back almost as far as recorded history, but military intelligence has until the last 200 hundred years or so had limited impact on the battlefield due to the technological challenges of getting information to a commander and then to units in the field. Intelligence was mainly the work of scouts. In a series of case studies starting with the naval operations of Lord Nelson, Keegan argues: "Intelligence, however good, is not necessarily the means to victory; that ultimately, it is force, not fraud or forethought, that counts" (p. 334). Two of the most striking examples he uses are the battles of Crete in 1940 and Midway in 1942. At Crete, the British had accurate signals intelligence telling them what the Germans were going to do and they still lost. At Midway, the Americans had equally good information on what the Japanese intended, but random chance was the key to U.S. victory. The American planes that sank three of the four Japanese carriers were lost and found the enemy fleet by accident at a time when their defenses were ill prepared for another attack. These arguments are important. We use this book at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College where I currently teach. Keegan's ideas are revisionist but also seem straight forward. The title is accurate. This book focuses only on military intelligence in war. The subtitle is a bit misleading. There is next to no mention of al-Qaeda in the book. Keegan is an exceptionally easy read, but he raises some significant questions which is always a good combination.
