Not as advertised. About 25% is about hunting and the rest is about different people and his trip to the Yukon. This took place in the early 20th. century and the author tells it as such. Don't waste your money.

This book reveals the perspective of leading Philadelphia businessman, Thomas Martindale. Nature lover, naturalist, and responsible hunter, Martindale takes us along on his journeys through the north. I love this book!

I love this book, and read it three times. The best part of the training plan is its simplicity, however, simple doesn't mean easy. Yes, of course you have to train hard, but the gym is optional. All you need is space to do the workout, steep hills and a backpack. For me, personally, I go to the gym to do a little work on weak areas of my legs, but that's just me; I need the extra help. Like any training plan, the key is consistency and doing all of the workouts as best you can. As a new climber, I find that it's a challenge trying to figure out how to train to climb mountains. I like to have a program to keep me on track, and this book has a plan all laid out up to climb day. For me that's huge because I don't have to think about what I'm suppose to do each day; I just follow the plan.I think that the long extended hikes with a heavy backpack prepares you the most because it will get you used to the long day you will have on summit day. The plan starts out gradually then slowly builds upon the previous weeks. For the hiking training, I like that the plan starts you with a light backpack then gradually adds weight to progress to a heavier one.The book has a training plan for strength, cardio and hiking endurance, but pay close attention to Chapter 13, "The Climb". John gives you a break down of what to expect on climb day and the different segments of the route to the summit. This is my favorite part of the book because, you get an idea of what to expect on summit day. Most importantly, I think he does an excellent job talking about the mental aspect which I think is crucial. You can be the fittest person in world, but you will need the mental fortitude to push when the mountain gets tough; and it will. He talks about a "healthy dose of fear" that we all feel when we are doing something scary. In summary, the training plan in this book has the components you need to help you prepare for this big challenge. There is strength, cardio, hiking training, and he talks about the mental aspect of dealing with the challenges you will face on Mt Rainier. What makes this book unique is the description of the segments of the route and what to expect. I think this is helpful in preparing you mentally, and it gives you a visual of the route. When I train, I visualize being on the mountain and it helps me to train harder. I'm following the plan myself, for my next climbs in Sierra Nevada and on Mt Rainier. There are other good books out there for different types of mountain climbing and expeditions, and I think if you work a 40-hour week, and don't have a lot of time to train all week, this book is helpful and is geared specifically for how to climb Mt Rainier. I highly recommend this book……..

If you just signed up with RMI, IMG or Alpine Ascents for your first summit experience, Fit to Climb will make the difference between really enjoying the summit or having the end be a blur of pain and suffering. If you're going to spend $1,000's to climb, you should spend another $20 and get yourself in shape to conquer the mountain. And, if you just signed up for the Mountaineers Basic program and you need to get up and down Mt. Si in 3 hours or less with a pack... Fit to Climb is perfect for you, too. The training program is a true "couch to summit" program. I love "Training for the New Alpinism", too, but House's program is advanced training for the serious climber. Fit to Climb will help you bag your first summit and start the habit of training outdoors.I trained with both John and Rohit to climb Rainer for the first time in 2014 at age 41 after reading John's first book, Fit By Nature. I followed the program and was able to summit in 16 weeks. As a Washingtonian who has looked at "The Mountain" all my life, the thrill of standing on top and seeing from Oregon to Canada was beyond words. You can do this, you don't need a gym, just this book and a Discover pass to hike the hills in the Mountains to Sound Greenway.

I bought this and a couple other books to find a plan to prepare for climbing Mt. Rainier. I settled on this book because it contains a very straightforward, uncomplicated plan tailored to the goal of climbing Mt. Rainier. It doesn't require any weight training, as the strength exercises are all using your own body weight. You'll need access to a long set of stairs or at least a stair machine. I initially used hills as a substitute but found a stair machine was more beneficial. The key though of course is actual weekly hiking practice sessions at gradually increasing pack weight and duration. The description of the climb itself was very beneficial in mentally preparing. Just buy the book and follow the instructions. Its not easy, and requires a substantial time commitment, but if you want to know you will be at least physically prepared for the climb, its perfect. It worked for me.

Fit to Climb is a must read for anyone who wants to climb Mt Rainier, or any other mountain. It is also good read for anyone who wants to be inspired to get in better shape. Not only does the book contain a detailed workout schedule, it contains lots of practical and correct advise on how to train, when to train, what to eat and drink and why exercise, rest, food and hydration all works together. The workout schedule makes perfect sense and it works.I have climbed Mt. Rainier 3 times and Mt. Kilimanjaro once. I used a guide service on all but one of the climbs. Fit to Climb is a perfect compliment to the training and guidance provided by the guide services. As the book points out, it is critical to get your training in long before you meet with the guide service for technical training. The Fit to Climb workout schedule emphasizes long hikes which, in my experience, are the key to mountain climbing.Lastly, anyone who wants to climb Mt. Rainier but has not done so already, should read Chapter 13, “Summit Day.” When I read that chapter, the description of the climb put me right back on Mt. Rainier.

The information in this book is a must for anyone about to take the challenge to climb Rainier. Colver takes out all the guess work as to what to expect and how to be prepared. Written in plain language and the illustrations are easy to follow. Planning to make the climb in July and beginning to feel fit and confident!
