Excellent book for tourists and those who wish to explore Guyana. It's detailed with alot of information about where to visit, history, where to eat, where to stay and much more. I've found it useful on my journeys throughout this region. Highly recommended.

I purchased this specific travel guide in preparation for a trip to Georgetown this summer (2008). I found it to be both educational, timely (January 2008 copyright date),authentic and insightful from the author's personal narrative and perspective about this unique South American country. I also wanted to add some of the perceived "typos" mentioned by the previous reviewer are possibly not really typos for those of British or European backgrounds, I believe it is how they form and spell specific word patterns in their country, for example...realised (European) in the USA is spelled "realized" or enquiry (European) in USA is spelled "inquiry"Callie Wilder

If you are going to Guyana, get this book. When you get to Guyana relax over a cappuccino and enjoy the lunch buffet at the Oasis, then get out of Georgetown and get into the interior. (Don't forget to bring steel leader if you plan on fishing, the piranha bite through regular leader like it wasn't even there).

This is the first Bradt travel guide I have purchased and the standard is excellent, Better than any other travel guide I have purchsed for any other country. The author writes very well, has actually lived in the place, and has taken the trouble to visit just about everywhere he describes. I purchased separately a map by another publisher and it was lousy and a waste of money. The maps in the Bradt guide are excellent and show every single place you might want to visit. A travel guide for Guyana can hardly be a great commercial proposition and Bradt are to be congratulated for taking such a brave decision.

This is a great book because it covers the history, tradition, food, biodiversity, among other things from Guyana. It is illustrated with maps, photographs and drawings. I liked this book because I am planning on traveling to Guyana and this guide helped me plan my trip. It even has a section with drawings for animal tracks that you might see in the forest. I recommend it

Ok

Just got back from Guyana, a broken country. Used Kirk's guide book, excellent coverage, but too charitable/not realistic enough about the country. Georgetown is a dump, but the guide dodges around this fact. This book was written in '07, but it doesn't seem much has changed in the last 4 years. (I notice an '011 edition is just out, btb.) Pretty indicative of the progress, or lack thereof, in this country.A few quibbles. If you go to Guyana, bring binoculars! Nowhere does Kirk mention this. Also, no advice at all on tipping. It would have been useful. And finally, I really don't know why the Canopy Walkway is so highly rated. Practically a waste of time. A stay at the IwoKrama Field Station is a thousand times better, as well as a stay at Rockview. Skip the canopy walkway unless that is going to be your only time in the rain forest.

This is the first guidebook that treats Guyana separately as a country, and is very well researched. There is no contest between this and other guidebooks -- the level of detail and coverage of the country is unmatched when compared to the Lonely Planet's "South America on a Shoestring", the only other guidebook I know that covers Guyana well. This book is a must have for anyone visiting or moving to Guyana. My only gripe with the book is that there is the occasional typo that can be annoying.

About the Author

Sushi has been a part of Aya Imatani’s life since she was a child. Her father owned a sushi bar in Kobe, Japan, and she now runs her own catering business. From the foreword of Sushi: The Beginner's Guide:"And who am I? Not just someone who learned to make sushi at home and is now writing a book about it—anybody could do that! Sushi has been a part of my life since infancy. My father owned a sushi bar in Kobe, Japan, and while other children were playing with blocks, I filleted my first fish at the age of five! Owning a sushi bar was a demanding business, and when my brother and I were little, our parents were often busy. But every night, after closing time, the two of us sat down at the bar just like grownups and Otosan (Father) made us whatever kind of sushi we asked for. Now that I've grown up and work in the restaurant business, I can really appreciate that special attention. For us, it made the hours of waiting worthwhile, and created a love and respect for sushi I still feel to this day."

Tools for the Sushi MasterHaving the right tools on hand makes it a lot easier and more enjoyable to make sushi, andwhile some—like a strainer, bowl, measuring cup, and plastic cutting board—you may alreadyhave, there are others that you might have to look for in Asian groceries, health-food stores, and an increasing number of supermarkets. Many are inexpensive, and some are optional. But for best results, the first thing you’ll need is a set of authentic Japanese knives.

Easy to read instruction. Nice illustrations. Some great sushi ideas with easy to follow instructions. Though my creations are not up to the authors style, I keep trying. A fun book to have.

My daughter in Law wanted Sushi stuff for xmas. I came across this book and got it for them since they are new to making their own Sushi. They love the book. Have tried many of the different recipes and told me this is one of her favorite xmas presents. I took a look at it and wrote down a few of the recipes I liked and have tried those as well and my husband and I am very pleased with the ingredients, understanding of how the recipes are presented, along with very nice photos, clear instructions and alot of choices. Very nice book and very happy with our decision to choose this one as a gift and also for some additions to my own recipe library. Thank you.

Book illustrates making sushi simply and without too much mess (aside from the sticky rice). Get a bamboo mat for rolling the Nori seaweed and rice into a roll and use fish or veggies. They have some very beautiful photos of food, very artistic. This is a good place to start learning Japanese cuisine. I don't eat the shellfish that is often used in store made sushi or even in this book but you can pick ingredients you can eat. Make sure to have a nice sharp knife and practice low pressure slicing to not squash the rice roll.

I am not so naive as to think that everything that I need to know about making sushi could be contained in one book. I coupled the contents of this book, Youtube videos, and Google searches to gain basic sushi making skills. Everyone does it a little different and has different advice that I had to manage to make some amazing sushi, sashimi, and nigiri. I did not end up using any recipe from this book but I did find some of her advice and the photos helpful.

Received this book in my order today. My daughter really loves cooking, loves sushi!I really like how this book it set up. Easy to use and really well explained for someone just beginning. We look forward to putting it to use!

Love this book. We have been wanting to make some sushi rolls at the house for a while. We like trying new things and love sushi. Made for a great day. The book has step by step instructions for many different types of sushi and rolls. There are also a lot of tips that were very helpful tool

I buy a lot of cook books and instructional books through Amazon. This one is one of my top rated. It really is what the title indicates.I have done a lot of Asian cooking over the last few years. But most of it has focused on stir fry, soups, noodles, and fried things. I finally got around to wanting to learn about Sushi. And to be perfectly honest here, I was pretty much a Sushi virgin. I've eaten it a few times over the last 10 years, but never attempted to make it in any way. So after a little research on the net, I decided to get something a little more complete, that would start off with the basics and cover all the important stuff. Well... this book is indeed it. After reading the first few sections, visiting a local Asian grocery store, and purchasing a Sushiquik on Amazon... I tackled the job. Strangely enough, everything came out great. Not liking anything about the concept of eating raw fish, I opted for the pre-cooked fake crab and some pre-cooked shrimp. In any case, as stated before, everything was excellent.Back on topic, it's a great book with a lot of good info in it. A great place to start.

Was disappointed to see the odd collection of sushi recipes, was hoping the most common rolls would be included. Purchasing another book for my next time making sushi.

This is a great starter sushi guide! There are SOO many pictures, including step by step rolling instructions, it really makes it almost impossible to mess up!The only reason that I gave it 4 (and not 5) stars is that I wish it had a few more sushi roll recipes and ideas. A lot of the recipes are all very similar, or the same item with only one or so ingredient differences. This probably wont be a cook book that I keep around forever, but while I'm learning the basics it is a great go to!
