About the Author

Herbert George is a sculptor and retired teacher. As a sculptor, his work has received support and recognition from the New York State Council on the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. In the 1970s he founded TRACKS: A Journal of Artists’ Writings and taught the history of sculpture at Cooper Union in New York. In 1985, he moved to the University of Chicago where he taught undergraduate and graduate sculpture. He retired from teaching in 2006, and was awarded a Getty Museum Fellowship in 2007.

Every page has an image illustrating a concept. Beautifully written, accessible yet thought provoking descriptions. Inserted are artists' quotes. As an object, this publication is gorgeous; heavy pages, beautiful images, great text layout. An essential book for art and art history students and enthusiasts of any age. This is truly an "essential viewer's guide to the visual language of sculpture. I highly recommend this primer for high school students, college student, and teachers of all levels. I love it, and you will too!

A shopping list of key observable elements that the author deems important for the uninitiated (FYI, all the elements are mentioned on the book's cover). This book will not help you figure out the great from the good from the bad works. But gives you markers to help you understand it a little better. I did find it interesting though the author avoids going into any depth on any topic. Had I read this book in a bookstore I do not think I would have bought it as I went through the book in 25 minutes.

In this sturdy, high-quality book, Herbert George discusses the fourteen characteristics of sculpture which he considers pertinent to understand and appreciate sculpture. These include for example: material, place, texture, colour, volume, space, movement, light and memory. Though this approach is enlightening, the fact that no less fourteen features are identified makes it impractical to apply on a regular basis for the casual amateur of sculpture.The main interest of this book lies rather in the wide array of examples that are used to illustrate the fourteen elements. Thus, the reader is exposed in a single book to works ranging from Antiquity to the present, from Canova and Michelangelo to Cristo and Amish Kapoor. Though in almost all cases only a single photo is provided for each sculpture, this is sufficient to adequately demonstrate the author’s point … and to delight the reader.

As a stone sculptor always in need of finding a clear way to describe my work, I found Herbert George's "The Elements of Sculpture" an excellent framework to work with. His combination of clear and concise definitions with excellent photographic examples, makes this book the perfect companion for someone wanting to understanding 3D art; from ancient times to the 21st century. Highly recommended!

I visited Westport Ireland three years ago in search of my grandmother’s (Cahill) birth certificate. It is a beautiful place on the West Coast of Ireland, north of Galway. It lies at the foot of Croagh Patrick which is named in honor of Saint Patrick, the apostle and patron of Ireland and the Irish race. According to tradition, St. Patrick fasted and prayed on the summit of Croagh Patrick for forty days in the year 441.This visit stimulated my interest in Saint Patrick and the legends about him that pervade the Emerald Isle. It led to my purchase of “The Confession of Saint Patrick (Confessions of St. Patrick): With the Tripartite Life, and Epistle to the Soldiers of Coroticus.”The book is in three parts and begins with the Confession of St. Patrick, which is the brief story of St. Patrick's life, told through his own eyes. You will look into the mind of one of history’s best-known saints. It is similar to St. Augustine’s Confessions and provides a stirring account of the miraculous ways that God works and encourages us into a life of courage on holiness. It is believed that St. Patrick wrote this after having had his character attacked by those in power.“I, Patrick is center, the rudest and least of all the faithful, and most contemptible to very many, had for my father, Porteous, a deacon, the son of put it this, a priest, who lived in the Navin Cabernet, for he had a small country house close by, where I was taken captive when I was nearly 16 years of age. I knew not the true God and I was brought captive to Ireland with many thousand men, as we deserved; for we had forsaken God, and had not kept his commandments and were disobedient to our priest, who admonished us for our salvation. And the Lord brought down upon us the anger of his spirit, and scattered us amongst many nations even to the ends of the earth, were now my littleness may be seen among strangers.The Lord showed me my inequities and strengthened my heart towards him. I cannot and ought not be silent concerning the great benefits and graces which the Lord has bestowed upon me in the land of my captivity.”The second part of the book, “Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus,” is a letter written by Patrick after he had lived and worked as a bishop in Ireland for many years. Patrick wrote this scathing letter to Coroticus and the British Christians after they came to Ireland and kidnapped and killed many of Patrick’s Christian converts.The third part of the book, “The Tripartite Life” was initially written partly in Irish and in parts in Latin from the late 9th century, and focuses on St. Patrick’s life in three parts. It was written to be read in three parts over the three days of the saint’s festival. I found this part to be the most difficult to get through. I suspect, though, it is an academic feast for historians.The reader will gain a deeper understanding of St. Patrick and Irish history with “Confessions….” This book is derived from historical documents.While some may find this book a difficult read,I am giving it five stars. Stories written in the fifth century by St. Patrick deserve nothing less. These are treasures.

I now teach rock and blues history at UT Austin and Texas State. But my credentials in a well rounded knowledge of rock come from having grown up in New Delhi, on a balanced diet of world and US popular music. Rock 'n' roll, the 50s' idiom might have been a US amalgamation (as it was), rock was not.If you wanted maximum info on British rock artists, this was one of the two books to get in the 1980s. Actually, the earlier versions published in 1982, 1986, and 1989, (under changing titles--just look for Mike Clifford as the author) are way better for those who believe punk, post punk, and new wave have proven the death of all that was good about rock.Singles chart positions for US and UK and discography for each artist is included as are great live photos and images of classic album jackets. Unfortunately, in each successive edition, major artists had to be moved to the appendix to make room for contemporary pop artists who did not match up artistically or in terms of rock credentials.If you are reading this on amazon.com, as you are, you should already know the US version of the story. Expand your horizons.1 star deducted for this edition's emphasis shift to the then contemporary artists.

As with the fourth edition, this has a great index which is ABSOLUTELY necessary for obtaining information. This is a wonderful reference book. A great gift!

It doesn't have an index, so you're limited in the information you do get. Buy the 4th or 5th edition instead.

I've had several volumes of this book. If you can get past the 80's cheese factor this is one of the best editions.
