This book is incredible! The amount of research that must have gone into it is head-spinning. The author has more than done his homework, he has drilled down deeply, very deeply, into the raw material of the show, watching every episode and movie and providing a thoroughly comprehensive, detailed guide. For those of us who grew up on the show, who connected with the travails of the castaways, the gentle humor of their predicaments, and the nobility of their ingenuity and optimism, Gilligan's Island was more than a TV show. It was a guide to a way of being in the world. I have about a half dozen books about the show (From Sherwood Schwartz, Russell Johnson, Bob Denver, et. al) but this book blows them all away. Trust me -- if you love Gilligan's Island, this book is a gift. Rick Cave is a hero to those of us who spent the best part of our lives vicariously on that island. The book is a marvel, and I urge everybody to get a copy. You will not exhaust its richness but you will consult it almost daily (now that the show is back on MeTV). What a find!

Favorite show brings back memories.

very happy will order again

This would make a great reference book with all the details of the show. This is not for a casual fan. Good book

The Secret Chord: A Novel, by Geraldine Brooks

Review

Praise for The Secret Chord“A page turner. . .Brooks is a master at bringing the past alive. . .in [her]skillful hands the issues of the past echo our own deepest concerns:  love and loss, drama and tragedy, chaos and brutality.”—Alice Hoffman, The Washington Post“The Secret Chord—a thundering, gritty, emotionally devastating reconsideration of the story of King David—makes a masterly case for the generative power of retelling. . .some of the magic here has to do with setting and time—for sensory dramatics, it’s hard to compete with the Iron Age Middle East. . .but Brooks’s real accomplishment is that she also enables readers to feel the spirit of the place.”—The New York Times “There’s something bordering on the supernatural about Geraldine Brooks.  She seems able to transport herself back to earlier time periods, to time travel.  Sometimes, reading her work, she draws you so thoroughly into another era that you swear she’s actually lived in it.  With sensory acuity and a deep and complex understanding of emotional states, she conjures up the way we lived then. . .Brooks has humanized the king and cleverly added a modern perspective to our understanding of him. . .[Her] vision of the biblical world is enrapturing.”  —The Boston Globe“The David that bursts off the page in this chronicle is a larger-than-life commixture of virtues and flaws. . .I may be late to the party on the amazing Ms. Brooks, but The Secret Chord won me over.  Its storytelling magic is as timeless as the tale it tells.”—The San Francisco Chronicle                                                                  “It’s this David – gifted artist, vainglorious alpha male, conflicted husband and father – that we meet in The Secret Chord, the beautiful, subtle, grave new novel by Geraldine Brooks. . .The Secret Chord paints [a] fresh portrait of King David. . .For Brooks, David is interesting not for his status as the most beautiful man in art history, but, rather, for his matrix of contradictions. . .in this telling, he is the Bible’s ultimate Machiavellian.”   —USA Today“Rich and imaginative. . .Thanks to Brooks, David is as compelling as he is contradictory, with the writing in The Secret Chord as lyrical as the lyre that David plays.” —The Minneapolis Star Tribune“Deeply sympathetic. . .Brooks offers new perspectives on a character whose story has captured the Western imagination for millennia. . .she breaks from the biblical version by giving voice to the voiceless women in David’s life:  wives and lovers, a daughter, a mother -- the beloved and the scorned.” —The Chicago Tribune  “A compelling read, contemporary in its relevance. . .The Secret Chord is powerful storytelling, its landscape and time evoked in lyrical prose.”  —The Guardian  “The best historical fiction. . .Brooks gives the whole king his due. . .It’s a tall order to breathe life into such a human being, and she manages it admirably.”                                            -—NPR“In The Secret Chord, Brooks does what she does best: bring psychological realism and dramatic arc to a subject we scantly know from history and myth. . .The result yields a gripping tale of a ruler’s stresses and sacrifices, his triumphs and shames.  The Secret Chord reads like a Shakespeare history play with a dash of Machiavelli.”—The Dallas Morning News                                                            “[A] deeply imaginative exploration of this once powerful but deeply flawed ruler. . .Brooks is a gifted, engrossing storyteller.  Like March and People of the Book, The Secret Chord is studded with action, interesting characters, sweeping timelines and moving scenes filled with drama and conflict. . .a timely and universal exploration of the limits of loyalty, the seductive and corrupting influence of power, and the intersections between sin and faith, punishment and redemption.”—The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel                                                         “George R.R. Martin’s got nothing on the biblical chroniclers of David, kind of Israel.  Incest? Treachery and murder?  Marriages for love and political alliance?  This is the original Game of Thrones. . .Each of the members of David’s court comes into sharp relief.”—The Miami Herald                                                               “Like her beautiful descriptions of David as worshipful musician, Brooks' surface details befit the ancient story. Her delicate rendering of the spare, sun-pierced land is a painful foreshadowing of its still-embattled importance.” —Philadelphia Inquirer “The Pulitzer-Prize winning author has succeeded in humanizing a mythic figure, breathing life, emotion, and literary resonance into a midrash that transforms David the King into David the Man.”                                                                               —Haaretz.com“In her gorgeously written novel of ambition, courage, retribution, and triumph, Brooks imagines the life and character of King David in all his complexity. . .The language, clear and precise throughout, turns soaringly poetic when describing music or the glory of David’s city. . .taken as a whole, the novel feels simultaneously ancient, accessible, and timeless.” —ALA Booklist

#83,011 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I'm proud to say that I've read all of Geraldine Brooks's books, including her non-fiction. And while some are not as good as others, at her best she is wonderful. From my perspective, "The Secret Chord" joins "March" and "Year of Wonders" as one of her best.First, she has an uncanny ability to transport her readers to other places and times, as she does here and in the other two favorite works; she includes everyday details, such as food and drink, that make those other places and times real and tangible.Second, in her best works, she seizes upon intriguing plots and unusual approaches to those plots -- here, the perspective of a prophet who accompanied David throughout his life and was one of the few people who could be candid with and about him.Last (at least as far as this review is concerned), she is a master (mistress?) of dialogue and description, such that everything seems, well, so natural. These skills all come together in "The Secret Chord," and as a result the book is not only a great narrative; it is also a study of power and how it corrupts both the wielder of power and those close to him/her.This book is simply wonderful and will almost surely be in my Top 10 for 2015.

I just returned this book at 30 percent read, even though our book club is reading it this month. I'm giving it two stars only because the author can write.Brooks' language, while perhaps true to the time and situation, is offensive. And I read contemporary general-market thriller, suspense, and mystery (Silva, Badacci, Thor, Penny, Child), so I'm not lily-white in terms of my reading. The homosexual relationship between King David and Jonathan is offensive and heretical. There's also not, among respected Biblical scholars—both left- and right-leaning—a shred of credible evidence to support this assertion. (I don't consider myself a scholar, but my graduate degree is from one of America's leading seminiaries.)The only thing I can figure out is that Ms. Brooks decided to get sensational with her facts to increase sales. I hope that worked for her. But I'll not read another of her books and will encourage book club to avoid them in the future.

I have read every published book of Geraldine Brooks, fiction and nonfiction. She never disappoints. The Secret Cord brings depth, color and vitality to a well-known story. To any who ask why read a novel of such a well-known story I can only respond that when you read this book you comprehend the story and David with new understanding. While consistent with the story as it has come down to us, the book supplies the color, details and smells beyond beyond the biblical story. A triumph of story telling. It is much more than an historical novel. It paints a compelling portrait of a fascinating and at times, repellant, and at times, heroic character.

Geraldine Brooks is a mastercrafts women when it comes to writing. This topic is one of her most ambitious yet as she brings to life the story of King David. I have to admit I struggled with the first three chapters as it's not her normal style however this sets the scene for the book so relevant even if felt a bit rigid. Once I got to the fourth chapter the writing changed slightly and the characters sprang to life. Wow, could not put it down. The story was well researched and brought to life the life and times of the Old Testament, bloody battles, adultery, family feuds and strategies that founded Israel . I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and recommend pushing through the first few chapters and know you will enjoy the ride.

This book is about King David; his rise to power and maintenance of the throne, the people who surrounded him, loved him, envied him, and hated him, who he was as a leader and who he was as a person. Despite the many unfamiliar names and places, the clarity of Brooks' writing makes this story comfortable to read. There was an undercurrent of debate in my reading group as to whether or not this is a "true" account of King David's life. For me this didn't matter because my take away was that I had experienced a beautifully crafted narrative that connected me to the consistencies of human emotions throughout time. The themes of love and war and the complexity of these things ring as true today as they did then.

We had just returned from Israel where we had visited an archeological site identified as David's palace, so the book's following of the actual "facts on the ground" was quite impressive. Most of us are familiar with the bare bones of David's story, but the author puts flesh on the tales. I was initially irritated with her use of the characters' names in their Hebrew spelling rather than their more familiar, Anglicized, forms; but I got used to them and grudgingly accept that this device forced me to think of the characters more discerningly. It took me longer to read as a consequence but helped my comprehension.

Not typically interested in books about history, much less Old Testament history, I was surprised how the details of the lives of David (who became King David) and the family and friends around him became so important to me. Geraldine Brooks guesswork buoyed by all the research she has done brings this whole period of time--1000 years before Jesus' story begins--into immediate focus. There is a great amount of detail about the tribal cultures that existed and the continual fighting that existed between them. Make no mistake, this is an adventure story and at times, a mystery as well. The book is easily read, Geraldine Brooks excells at creating a riveting story between the known facts.

Intriguing to read. A puzzle and a mystery waiting generations to be solved. A woman with a heart narrow and twisted. Leaving some without a past, without a name. Slowly the hidden mystery of a family is solved and the dead and the living find peace.

This is a solid book. It can be hard these days to find a novel that isn't predictable or derivative of another work. I truly enjoy novels that can surprise and shock me. This was one of them. I've had this book for about 5 years, now, and I've read it 3 times. I also recommended it to my Mother-in-Law who listened to the audiobook. The first time I read it, I stayed up the better part of two nights to finish it! Ha, I just couldn't put it down! I really wanted to see what was going to happen next, and the author did a great job of keeping me in the dark! There were a few things that I caught early, but some not until they were written right out!I loved the fairy-tales that were included with this novel! I can't believe she wrote those! They were completely unexpected, super magical, and allowed you to dive deeper into certain characters and understand their reasonings and motivations. Such a unique and awesome idea.I don't want to give anything from the plot away, as I personally hate when reviews do that! I will say that I've lent it out to friends, and reccomended it as well. I look forward to a couple of years from now when I "forget" enough and it will be a fresh read again. It gets better every time.

Well, Ms. Morton, you are, indeed, a storyteller! I've read the Lake House and now this book, and I loved both stories! I enjoy the way two very different centuries are woven together to tell this tale, and the characters are full and real.....I, as you can tell, am NOT a professional reviewer, just a book addict who wants to say thank you for sharing your talent!

What a decadent, delicious read! This is the second of Kate Morton's books that I have read and I must have more!I savored every, single page of this book. Would it be presumptuous of me to say that perhaps this is the best book I have ever read? I'm not sure, but it surely comes close. The story is mysterious, interesting and provoking. I could perhaps predict what may happen next but I would be wrong. There was only one detail in this book that I thought to know before the reader will have found out but somehow, I believe that Kate wanted it that way and even though I knew ... she uncovered the clues so deliciously that it felt good and right. Don't worry ... you will feel the sensation of validation and I certainly did. Really ... so delicious! The characters in this story were vivid, wonderful and very believable. I wanted to hate the oppressors! They were mean, vindictive, cruel, self-serving and completely without morals. How could you not love a character like that who's sole purpose was to enrich a story?! And yet, I could feel sympathy for them because they were conditioned by their environments and could only behave the way they were trained to do so.There were endearing characters in this story that you can fall in love with only to have your heart ripped out because of the circumstances that uncovered flaw and destiny. I rejoiced with them, fell in love with them, savored their innocence and understood that life's circumstances invite one to measure up, take charge or coward and withdraw in the anguish. You will always be invited to root for the underprivileged.Oh yes, a juicy read that enriches the readers life and the tickle of intimacy and creativity that invites the reader to acknowledge a longing for a life of adventure and mystery. Yes ... a little bit of history laced in the pages of this book that elude to a time long ago and happenings that the reader may not have been present for but could only imagine.Indeed, this is a book of escape where one can savor the tastes of a fine meal where the flavors dance on the tongue and travel to the stomach only to nourish the body that seeks meaning and purpose. Definitely ... a must read!

I enjoyed the book but, as other readers have noted, it was confusing at times with the back and forth between time periods. Several times I thought I had the mystery all figured out but didn't get it right until the very end. That's a good mystery! Good characterizations that were well fleshed out. I'd recommend this book and plan to read more by Kate Morton.

I enjoyed The Forgotten Garden. Morton’s beautifully descriptive writing brings the past to life as it has in her other books. But also like her other books, the story follows the same formula. A present-day narrator discovering a mystery in her family’s past and attempting to solve it. This version wasn’t quite as successful because the narrators’ voices were very similar. I enjoyed Eliza’s portions of the story more than Nell’s and felt that Cassandra and Rose’s portions were a little lackluster in comparison. Though it is a bit rambling in places and I felt the ending was predictable, it was an entertaining read.

A lot of the attitudes and advice I encountered in Suze Orman and Robert Kiyosaki's books just didn't smell right to me but I could never quite articulate why exactly. The good news is that Olen's work has saved me the trouble of debunking Orman and others myself. It Is thoroughly researched and thoughtfully argued and all together a compelling read. I just wish this book had done more to bring attention to how wealth and income inequality disproportionately affects ethnic minorities.

Very interesting book, highly recommended. We are being ripped off by the financial services industry and Helaine Olen explains how. She also explains how personal finance gurus like Suze Orman get rich blaming people for their own financial troubles. Your latte is not making you poor!

Financial journalist Helaine Olen is not very happy with the "personal finance" industry. "Personal finance" in this context includes all those who write (Suze Orman et al), advise (financial planners), entertain (Jim Cramer and his Mad Money screamfest), manage money (Fidelity and all the other fund managers) for individuals, and so forth. The idea is to build wealth for retirement, kids' college, buying a house -- in short, it's an industry that is central to the quality of people's material well-being. The short version of Olen's diagnosis of this industry's problem is that all these people are in it for the money AND that because they are in it for the money, they will steer you wrong and rob you blind if it serves their interests. OK, so how is that different than dealing with many other businesses, such as buying a car or selecting a cell phone provider? She doesn't actually directly answer that question in a comparative way, but she does suggest several possible reasons:1) finance is unusually complicated, and the industry tries to make things even more complicated by making their products "non-transparent" through contract fine print and financial babble;2) the time horizons are really long, and people are not good about making sacrifices now that may not pay off for years;3) financial markets are inherently chaotic and unpredictable, and so our human tendency is to search for comforting answers from witch doctors who claim to be able to predict the future;4) the game has been rigged because the industry controls such huge wealth -- vastly more than even such powerful industries as auto manufacturers and telecommunications companies -- that it uses that wealth to buy politicians and prevent effective regulation.5) we don't make good decisions when we're fearful and the economic tides are moving against us. Try being rational with every purchase decision when you're stressed by living paycheck to paycheck, your health costs are soaring, you can't afford to send your kids to college, you have no pension, and your income is lower now than it was 10 years ago.Needless to say, Olen does not have to look far for examples of how the industry does us wrong. Suze Orman blithely told her fans that real estate was the best investment they would ever make in their lives, and then when the housing crash occurred, said "Oops, I was wrong. But hey, I've got this new book you should buy." Managers of actively managed funds (as opposed to market index funds), on average under-perform the market, year after year -- but relentlessly promote their high-expense services just the same. 401K fund plans for employees offer high expenses combined with limited fund selection -- and the reason that employers choose such poor fund plan providers is that they offer cheaper plan administration fees to the employers themselves! And so it goes. If you have been following this stuff, you won't be shocked. If you have NOT been paying attention through the last couple of market crashes, you will indeed be shocked. So what's distinctive about the author's analysis that you will not hear from every other critic of the financial industry? For me, it was two things.First, she points out that the personal finance industry tries to lay the responsibility for financial failures and successes almost entirely at the feet of the individual. It's a case of a "moralizing minority" telling everyone else that it's their fault that, over the last 25 years in the US, private employer pensions have largely disappeared, median incomes have stagnated (and actually declined for the lowest fifth of the population), private health care and college tuition costs have grown at several times the rate of inflation, and wealth and income inequality has become the absolute worst in the developed world. Not only is there an elephant in the room, but the elephant has died and its rotting carcass is stinking up the entire neighborhood. But still the moralists have barely noticed. Instead, they point to the fact that too many people feel entitled to their daily Starbucks latte. Olen argues that having people give up lattes isn't going to solve the massive public policy fiascos that underlie these long-term trends in US society. This situation needs a collective solution. In the grand scheme of things, moral exhortation to individuals isn't going to make much of a difference. However, Olen does not devote much ink to informing the reader what kinds of public policy solutions she does think are required, let alone how to actually get them enacted.Second, Olen says that there is at best a very weak relationship between making people more informed about financial matters and having them actually make better decisions. Of course, the fact that people often seek their information from salespeople in the financial business is obviously a part of the problem. Conflict of interest seldom leads to happy outcomes. But there is an even bigger problem. People are people, and will continue to fall into all the emotional traps that human beings have always embraced. They will continue to fall for well-packaged hucksters like Jim Cramer and to stick with their long-time financial planner who has sold them the whole life insurance policy they don't need. They will continue to fearfully hold too much money in cash and invest too little in assets that can produce income and capital gains. They will continue to save too little for retirement. But isn't this just putting the blame back on the individual, the same "too many Starbucks lattes" fallacy that she debunked earlier? I don't think this is a contradiction with Olen's point #1. I believe it just makes it all the more obvious why it's the unusual individual who is able to overcome those larger forces. Knowledge alone isn't enough. It takes a lot of emotional self-control. More important (back to point #1), it takes collective action to solve a collective problem.

As Americans, we like to believe that we are holders of our own future selves completely, but we’re not. As much as we are individually responsible, when the nation and personal finance industry both work in their own best interests, what can the average Joe do to get by? This book doesn’t answer this question, but makes the reader aware that there’s something off. I’m a college student that will be graduating with less than 10k in loans; however I am likely to be primary caregiver to both my parents as they age. My mom, a homemaker and my dad, an accountant were hit badly in the 2008 recession and even a decade later haven’t made back the losses they incurred at the time. If I fall sick, or don’t get a good job after college, what happens then? I will be failed by the system, whether I wanted to admit to that fact or not.

The writer of the fine Trekonomics, Manu Saadia, pointed me to Olen’s work in a conversation (you can pick up that name, since I dropped it and am done using it). What this book is is a complete and thorough debunking of your favorite personal finance guru. Most are charlatans, it seems that the real question is to what degree are they charlatans. What I take away is that like some presidential candidates, what is being sold is not success per se, but the idea of success. Wrap yourself in the rich dad poor dad millionaire next door Jim Cramer etc mindset and you too can be rich. Having long been skeptical of people searching for gurus, Olen’s book is a breath of fresh air. What is missing is a bunking where the debunking went.Aside from don’t follow these fools, I was at least looking for something that might guide what I should look for - the best advice Olen claims to have found is to short the stocks that Cramer pumps, as well as buying TIPS. Even my well-worn advice of buying index funds comes under some scrutiny here, and I want a guru. Wait, I think I get it now.

I enjoyed the research and history in this book about personal finance and why it leaves us poor. Helaine Olen is up there with Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed. Unfortunately, I would have liked more of a personal story in this story about the evolution of the selling of personal finance to the american public. I appreciate that we all buy into the myth of Horatio Alger, but at the end of her book, she almost got it right. The fact is that we can't all be rich, and there is no mechanism out there--not education, not working for one company, not making a lot of investments, not buying a lot of houses, not doing the best you can as an entrepreneur and not pissing others off. The truth of the matter is, rich people want to keep their riches and will do any amount of smoke and mirrors to keep the inbalance working. There will be no bill, there will be no Yahoo site to make people rich. The owners of Amazon and Netflix are not altruists.
