From the moment I read the three sample pages I knew I had to read this book. I grew up always wanting to dog steers, and have liked Luke for as long as I could remember. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in February of 2013, and he helped me realize my life wasn't over. I loved every part of this book from start to finish, and was great full to be allowed behind the velvet rope to see what rodeo life is all about. Cowboys have a code they live by, and you'll never understand it til you read this book. The fraternity type antics, and long nights of the stories portrayed in this book had me laughing tears several times. Yes the book has some foul language, but before you judge these cowboys are calious men, trust me as a otr driver I can relate...The road changes a man. I would like to see a sequel to this book!

... the more they remain the same.For some time I've been trying to find a book that tells it like it was, just "going down the road", back in the late 60's. Blacktop Cowboys has accomplished it. Though it's 2006 instead of '66-'69 and we sure weren't chasing any NFR standings, the feel is the same. Weren't no cell phones or fancy trailers with sleeper compartments back then and I ran with the "roughstock" crowd, not the ropers or doggers; but, this book transported me back in time. It was fun to recall what it was like to run from "show" to "show" traveling how and with who you could, the harsh practical joking that was always going on and the ever present cold beer. I long searched for a story of what it's like to pursue your dreams, on a shoestring, free of most encumberances that life later puts on us, that describes the pure enjoyment of that freedom. Ty Phillips has accomplished it.I suppose if one hasn't cowboyed some they won't truly appreciate some of the nuances herein, but if you have, you will. It provided me the chance to revisit one of the most carefree and idyllic times of my life. Thank you, Ty.

I suppose if you didn't know anything about rodeo cowboys and their on-the-road lifestyle told in a somewhat raunchy way, this might have been an exciting summer for author, Ty Phillips. I was hoping for more, as I am familiar with such rodeo cowboys and there was nothing new here for me. Like reading about a wild party - it was more fun if you were at the party than merely reading about it, or hearing from a friend who was allowed a peek inside.

This is a real fun book and depicts the way to rodeo guys live. Some of the language is crude, but that is part of what makes the book so real. Having grown up around to rodeo cowboys, my hat is off to the author for a true to life book on chasing a championship.

This book was great! Hard to put down. I think this book would be great for people who have no idea how much time and effort it takes to make it to the NFR. Very well written

Luke is my very favorite cowboy so enjoyed reading the book very much. Gave me a whole new perspective on Luke and rodeo cowboys in general....not that it really surprised me. Ty Phillips definitely did not sugarcoat it!

Phillips takes all those fans of professional rodeo on the road at 85 miles an hour in a 350 pickup, pulling an alumumum trailer loaded with horses and living space.Due to the descriptive skills of the author, the reader becomes a silent witness to the good, the bad, and the ugly side of life with the rodeo cowboy. I couldn't put the book down.

A terrilbe waste of a chance to portray the modern western world of the cowboy. I live in Texas, ride cutting horses, and consider myself a part of this western culture....and looked forward to reading an inside story of the rodeo world. But the author's writing style was so crude, repetative and boring that I had to fight to keep on reading, hoping that the story line would actually get going in some kind of intelligent manner. That never happened. Judging from the other reviews, I seem to stand alone in my evaluation....so much so that I wonder if we all read the same book. The opening sentence in the first paragraph on the first page..."unzipped his pants and began pissing into a fresh pile of horse manure"...should be a dead give-away of what the author seems to think is brilliant writing. The cowboy way of life is rough on the edges and unsophisticated in many ways, to be sure. But the author clouds a potentially great story line with this constant graphic description of bad behavior and crude, vulgar conduct. I get it already! The reader is beaten over the head with it, and the chance to tell the real story of what drives these men is lost.

Once again I was crying at the beginning of the book. It was so worth the wait and I can't wait until book 2 comes out. I really enjoyed how he learned that he needed them more then anything and would do anything to have them in his life. I'm just glad she put her hands on that nasty cousin of there's. Can't wait until it happens again and get this book everyone

This story had me laughing, crying . Lane and I will call him D was a hot mess i can not wait until part two comes out.

Girl this book got my attention, I couldn't put this book down I even took my kindle Fire to work and I couldn't take my tablet into work so that gave me an opportunity to go to my car and read more, I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait until the other one come out. Please don't take to long in writing it I got yo know what happened between those two.

I usually read and only leave reviews that are four or five stars but I have to say something about this. First of all I think you have great potential and your stories are captivating but honey, you need to fire your editor if you have one or hire a new one. This is my third book from you and it's going to be my last if you continue to put out these unedited books. That shows lack of respect for the craft and your fans. I see you changed the title to reflect that it’s a series but I strongly recommend you edit and resubmit. Some of you writers need to stop focusing on quantity and focus on quality. Don’t be one of those authors...not when you have such a bright future in this industry. Your word for today is edit....good luck.

You put a lot in telling us about kinky sex, but you couldn't finish the damn book. You had that Christian Grey thing going on . Allanah was crazy as sh!t but she was dumb enough not to read the papers that were left for her. This backwards ass book got on my nerves. Darian and Miko bonking Cassie at the same time, nasty! You skipped a lot, also. One minute I am reading one thing, the next I am reading something else. That it the reason you could have finished this crazy mess. I guess the Christian Grey thing was a two-part also. I didn't like that book and this one is running a close second. Stop writing so many words and finish a book. It was long. Shucks! I guess rich people get bored with making love (no particular colour), they resort to kinkiness. He doesn't want kids,so she will get pregnant and run away from him or stay the and desperately begging him to love her. How many years are we to wait for the sequel?

I have added you to my list of authors of do not read. Finish the damned book. Never again. Sending your name to all my friends and family explaining that you just stop mid stream. There’s a difference in writing a sequel or part 2, but to just stop is not right. Never again with you.

Typos are definitely an issue. Pacing is also an issue. I'm not sure if I like these characters. I'm not sure you have the reader enough back ground on each character. We need more substance. Cliff hanger???? Why? You didn't give us enough to be interested in.

My hardback copy of _The Mabinogion_ by Lady Charlotte Guest not only included Lady Guest's superior translation in its full, unabridged form with copious notes & the breathtaking art of Alan Lee, but also all of the black & white illustrations from the original 1877 edition. It was categorized as "Like New" & this copy looks like no one's even breathed on it. The dust jacket was included & completely intact with no tears or creases, text had absolutely no markings whatsoever, & binding was so tight & fresh that I don't think anyone's even opened it before. It even had that "new book" smell.

If you're interested in the illustrations from Alan Lee, the paperback version does not have them. The description of this version lists Alan Lee as one of the authors (which he is not). It would have been helpful to have known the difference (however cheap the paperback is.)

The Mabinogion is the oldest collection of telling of King Arthur and as such is empowered with certain authority and words of command that are the root source of legend. The translator has a deep understanding and respect for the substance of these stories and their meaning in the history of the English language and the people of those Isles. The story of Taliesin should be required reading for anyone who speak English as their first language. It should be sung by anyone who recognizes the power of the Bards.

A competant enough translation, not the best or the worst that is out there. I can't say yea or nay about how Lady Charlotte Guest did with the source materials of the book, but I have to say that it's pretty entertaining.It chronicles various tales from Wales, going back to ancient legends about heroes and gods, and then forward in time to recognizable elements such as King Arthur. Since this is a Dover thrift book (one of the pricier ones, since it's longer) the quality is so-so; the cover artwork is better than most of the thrift books, and the paper is only a little better than newpaper-quality.In terms of readability, however, Guest's Mabinogion does not win any prizes. The translated sentences really could use a little tweaking, and often dialogue between several people is crammed together into one long paragraph. This is not only distracting, but hard to read.Overall, it is fairly nice but needs an editor to tweak it in places. Fans of fantasy as well as mythology may want to check this out, especially if they are fans of the Prydain or Lost Years of Merlin series. For more readable Celtic myths, try Ella Young's "Celtic Wonder Tales."

An excellent collection of Welsh tales from the high Middle Ages. Like the contemporary Gaelic mythology it leaves one pondering the meanings of so many of the storys' details long after they finish reading it; I think the significance of so much of their content is lost on us modern readers, and probably even on the men who initially wrote them down in the 12-14th Centuries. Overall, this version of the Mabinogion is a worthwhile look into the Medieval Welsh imagination, and a good book for anyone interested in Arthurian mythology.

Still the most accurate translation of the complete works in the White Book of Rhydderch and Red Book of Hergest. Some archaisms but very readable. Excellent introduction and good notes.

Wonderful stories

Only had to read a few stories out of this for class, but some were so interesting that I went back and read other stories that were not assigned. Plus all the stories are pretty short, so they are quick easy reads!

This was my first book from this author, and wow what a crazy ride!This amazing scifi book, is set in the distant future, with space travel as the normal. We meet our southern hero Tiger, a semi retired deep space pilot, who is not adverse to doing a little smuggling to make a dollar. Coming home from his last little smuggling in deep space for a bit of rest, relaxation and to reconnect with his former love. Tiger became a hero by saving a young woman's life, but she was not your round of the house typical women. Realising that helping her is getting him deeper in trouble, he makes the decision that he cannot abandon her to fend for herself. There's amazing gun battles, fight scenes, bounty hunters who seek to take the woman he had saved. Tiger discovers dangerous secrets along the way, and let's not forget a crazy hillbilly family determined to hurt, kill anyone who gets in there way of getting back this woman and seek revenge. Loved this book and look forward to reading more from this author! 💚

Climb aboard and buckle up for this amazingly sexy, non-stop action, crazy ass ride through the universe with pilot Tiger Thomas as he tries to save Amber, a half human, half fox lab experiment from the people who created her and now want to kill her. Definitely a must read and I am waiting very impatiently for book number 2!!!!

This was a really entertaining story that had so many interesting concepts that truly came together to make an extraordinary story. Was was really glad that I purchased this and spent the time reading something that was out of my norm.

Honestly, it looked like it would shape up to be an awesome story but the incessant, anvilicious, social commentary - quite idiosyncratic social commentary at that, distracted and detracted from the yarn to the point that I only made it a third of the way through.

Well written action & adventure. Sad though too. Thinking about our world nearly two hundred years away. Still full of so much backwards wrong thinking. Corruption at all levels so empowered. Depressing perspective.

This book has everything!! It is a well written, detailed futuristic,science fiction story that also contains some pretty hot encounters amongst the characters. I recommend this to everyone even if not your normal genre.

This book takes you to the future. Flying ships, hybrids, mercs and the authority. Can't wait for the next one.

The book has what seems to be some great recipes but it has no pictures at all and I like to visualize what I am going to create in the kitchen at times.

I've cooked for my family for years. Italian, French, American cuisines. Now the household is smaller. Being an empty nester, I wanted something to cook with my new cuisinart panini press double sided grill. It's easy and quick with less clean up. Most of these recipes are family and friends friendly. He uses a lot of rosemary, but if your family doesn't like that you can omit or substitute other herbs everyone likes.While the recipes aren't stellar, he does get creative with the grill. His recipes include several low-carb choices. The book lacks illustrations of the finished product, however, it does include nutrition information for each recipe.Most other cookbooks for the indoor grill are more gourmet with unusual, hard to find, or expensive ingredients. I'm happy that this one gives good ideas without breaking the bank or being overly time-consuming spending a lot of time and energy searching for unusual ingredients. I find myself tweaking the spices too often, though, and if you're not interested in tweaking, this book is not for you. If you're looking for a cookbook you can use every week with your double sided grill with ingredients most cooks have on hand, you can use this one for ideas but be prepared to change the seasonings. Some cooks do that anyway, it depends on you. He has included several good ideas for grilled vegetable dishes, expanding on the usual fare, and there are recipes for homemade breakfast sausage patties, sides, and desserts. It's much more than just burgers and paninis! All this for three dollars. I just wish it had photos of the finished product. Sometimes I want to give I two and a half stars depending on my mood, but A for effort.

I love love love My George Foreman grill.And this cookbook just adds to the pleasure.Easy to read and follow the recipe.And it's hard back and lays flat.Walmart wants almost $20I got it for $2 for an Amazon used book !!!

Bought this for my Dad to go along with his grill. Perfect for a novice or inexperienced cook. The recipes are very simple and have a wide appeal (adults and kids).

I was really unsure about whether to buy this book, but I'm so glad I did! I just got my grill a couple of weeks ago and it really doesn't come with a single recipe and very little general guidelines. This cookbook had tons of recipies and tips and was organized well. It also gets high marks for "readability", i.e., not a bore. I bought the Kindle verson and now I have the recipies at my disposal when I'm shopping at the store. I've tried out several recipies and found that they worked well. I saw several other reviews that said they weren't particularly healthy recipies, but I found that some were, some weren't and those that weren't could easily be modified. I'm glad to have the choice...some days I want to be sure we eat very healthy and some days I just want dinner on the table! In my opinion, this book was worth the purchase.

Grill is great for both meats and veggies, makes yummy French toast , and is a cinch to clean. Very happy with it makes cooking dinner quick and easy.

We liked the recipes in the book. However, after following several recipes, we found the result too oily. In future recipes, we used less or NO oil. After these changes, the rest of the advice and the recipies taste great.

I cook mostly boneless breast of chicken and it comes out much tastier than the oven...my husband also likes the way the burgers come out. And it cooks so fast....it's amazing....easy cleanup...really like it....so glad I purchased it....

I'm sure this is a good book but there are no pictures and it reads like a newspaper to me. You might like it. I will be giving it away.

Rumi's poetry is one long love song to the divine. Frequently, whole poems didn't resonate with me except in their general ecstasy and enthusiasm for life, but I often found individual lines astonishing me with timeless, nourishing, life-affirming wisdom.The work is nearly 800 years old, yet much of the psychological insight and social commentary feels more relevant than ever now, making it a genuine classic of world literature. Rumi comments on a civilization ambushed by fools. He echoes Nietzsche, Eliot, and Yeats, when discussing the emptiness of existence without a spiritual center. He forecasts the collapse of modernism by pointing out the sterile, reductive flaws of a materialistic worldview. Unlike the morbidity of an Ecclesiastes, Aurelius, or Pascal who are often cynical, stoic, or melancholy in their assessment of the human condition, Rumi never wavers in his joyful participation in the infinite dance of the cosmos. The only comparable literary figure in the West who comes to mind is Walt Whitman.It's a privilege and a pleasure to sit at the feet of this ancient Sufi master, to drink from his inexhaustible fountain of praise, love, wisdom, to be illuminated by his intoxicating spirit songs.

Coleman Barks is NOT a translator. It is a fact that he cannot read, write, or speak Persian. He at first plagiarized the translations of other translators, like William Chittick, and later flipped the script and relented by claiming that he is just an Interpreter who “interpreted” others translations (but still prints his books as “translated by...” and gives no credit to the real translators). His interpretations however are white-washed (read the New Yorker article “The Erasure of Islam From The Poetry of Rumi” by Rozina Ali) and do not retain the true essence of Rumi. This book and Westerners’ mania over these translations is like an allegory for colonialism all over again. Invaded, stolen, defiled, and erased.

I was introduced to Rumi in a college Religion course on mysticism, and fell in love with the depth found in the simplicity of his words. I now use this book as a "Magic 8-Ball" of sorts...if I have a problem, I flip through it and stop at random, and read through Rumi's answer for me. His poetry is beautiful and his wisdom leaps off the page into your heart: "you are not a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean in a drop," "maybe you are searching among the branches, for what only appears in the roots," are only a few of my favorites.

Before you buy this, research Coleman Barks. He doesn't read Farsi and therefore can't translate it, and he says that Rumi came to him in a dream with new poetry.

From what I have been able to figure out, this is THE Rumi book to have. 388 pages of poetry (ok, 388 pages does include intro, index, etc.) And even some recipes in the back. This book is what I was hoping it would be. If you want to read Rumi and don't know where to start, I suggest starting with this book!

Rumi is well known. Not sure what to add other than please read if you haven’t already. Lovers of language, beauty, philosophy or any combination thereof would be hard pressed to find more insightful precise enchanting delicious poetry. Read...pause in delight...read...pause in delight...smile. Repeat as often as needed until you soul is full.

"Was this man from several centuries ago, a modern teenage or young woman? Because he has seen into my heart!"--Girl in my World Literature class who was definitely not wrong about this description. Rumi is able to transcend age, gender, religion, and time. I cannot say enough good things about the poems in this collection and even my mom who is not interested in poetry/literature was in awe at the poems and words. While I had ordered this for class, I can see myself reading them for many years to come.Something that you guys may find helpful is something my professor said, having taught Rumi for a decade or so: "Read Rumi at certain intervals in your life, and you will find that the poems that impacted you in one way, will change into something meaningful in your current life. Continue to read Rumi and you will be inspired."

Coleman Barks is a wonderful writer and translator. I wish I could take a writing course of his! My only complaint with this edition is that he uses endnotes for his clarifications, but does not signal in the actual text body (with a superscript number) what he's expounding. This would've been nice for the academic user. But don't let that stop you. Everything from the quality of the translation to the quality of the hardback books is phenomenal. Purchase away!

For those of us who grew up on the show, who connected with the travails of the castaways, the gentle humor of their predicaments, and the nobility of their ingenuity and optimism, Gilligan's Island was more than a TV show. It was a guide to a way of being in the world. I have about a half dozen books about the show (From Sherwood Schwartz, Russell Johnson, Bob Denver, et. al) but this book blows them all away. Trust me -- if you love Gilligan's Island, this book is a gift. Rick Cave is a hero to those of us who spent the best part of our lives vicariously on that island. Geraldine Brooks is the author of four novels, the Pulitzer Prize–winning March and the international bestsellers Caleb’s Crossing, People of the Book, and Year of Wonders. She has also written the acclaimed nonfiction works Nine Parts of Desire and Foreign Correspondence. Her most recent novel, Caleb’s Crossing, was the winner of the New England Book Award for Fiction and the Christianity Today Book Award, and was a finalist for the Langum Prize in American Historical Fiction. Born and raised in Australia, she lives on Martha’s Vineyard with her husband, the author Tony Horwitz.

I'm proud to say that I've read all of Geraldine Brooks's books, including her non-fiction. And while some are not as good as others, at her best she is wonderful. From my perspective, "The Secret Chord" joins "March" and "Year of Wonders" as one of her best.First, she has an uncanny ability to transport her readers to other places and times, as she does here and in the other two favorite works; she includes everyday details, such as food and drink, that make those other places and times real and tangible.Second, in her best works, she seizes upon intriguing plots and unusual approaches to those plots -- here, the perspective of a prophet who accompanied David throughout his life and was one of the few people who could be candid with and about him.Last (at least as far as this review is concerned), she is a master (mistress?) of dialogue and description, such that everything seems, well, so natural.These skills all come together in "The Secret Chord," and as a result the book is not only a great narrative; it is also a study of power and how it corrupts both the wielder of power and those close to him/her.This book is simply wonderful and will almost surely be in my Top 10 for 2015.

I just returned this book at 30 percent read, even though our book club is reading it this month. I'm giving it two stars only because the author can write.Brooks' language, while perhaps true to the time and situation, is offensive. And I read contemporary general-market thriller, suspense, and mystery (Silva, Badacci, Thor, Penny, Child), so I'm not lily-white in terms of my reading.The homosexual relationship between King David and Jonathan is offensive and heretical. There's also not, among respected Biblical scholars—both left- and right-leaning—a shred of credible evidence to support this assertion. (I don't consider myself a scholar, but my graduate degree is from one of America's leading seminiaries.)The only thing I can figure out is that Ms. Brooks decided to get sensational with her facts to increase sales. I hope that worked for her. But I'll not read another of her books and will encourage book club to avoid them in the future.

I have read every published book of Geraldine Brooks, fiction and nonfiction. She never disappoints. The Secret Cord brings depth, color and vitality to a well-known story. To any who ask why read a novel of such a well-known story I can only respond that when you read this book you comprehend the story and David with new understanding. While consistent with the story as it has come down to us, the book supplies the color, details and smells beyond beyond the biblical story. A triumph of story telling. It is much more than an historical novel. It paints a compelling portrait of a fascinating and at times, repellant, and at times, heroic character.

Geraldine Brooks is a mastercrafts women when it comes to writing. This topic is one of her most ambitious yet as she brings to life the story of King David. I have to admit I struggled with the first three chapters as it's not her normal style however this sets the scene for the book so relevant even if felt a bit rigid. Once I got to the fourth chapter the writing changed slightly and the characters sprang to life. Wow, could not put it down.The story was well researched and brought to life the life and times of the Old Testament, bloody battles, adultery, family feuds and strategies that founded Israel . I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and recommend pushing through the first few chapters and know you will enjoy the ride.

This book is about King David; his rise to power and maintenance of the throne, the people who surrounded him, loved him, envied him, and hated him, who he was as a leader and who he was as a person. Despite the many unfamiliar names and places, the clarity of Brooks' writing makes this story comfortable to read. There was an undercurrent of debate in my reading group as to whether or not this is a "true" account of King David's life. For me this didn't matter because my take away was that I had experienced a beautifully crafted narrative that connected me to the consistencies of human emotions throughout time. The themes of love and war and the complexity of these things ring as true today as they did then.

We had just returned from Israel where we had visited an archeological site identified as David's palace, so the book's following of the actual "facts on the ground" was quite impressive. Most of us are familiar with the bare bones of David's story, but the author puts flesh on the tales. I was initially irritated with her use of the characters' names in their Hebrew spelling rather than their more familiar, Anglicized, forms; but I got used to them and grudgingly accept that this device forced me to think of the characters more discerningly. It took me longer to read as a consequence but helped my comprehension.

Not typically interested in books about history, much less Old Testament history, I was surprised how the details of the lives of David (who became King David) and the family and friends around him became so important to me. Geraldine Brooks guesswork buoyed by all the research she has done brings this whole period of time--1000 years before Jesus' story begins--into immediate focus. There is a great amount of detail about the tribal cultures that existed and the continual fighting that existed between them. Make no mistake, this is an adventure story and at times, a mystery as well. The book is easily read, Geraldine Brooks excells at creating a riveting story between the known facts.
