Ernest Buckler's "Ox Bells & Fireflies" is a pastoral memoir. It is fictional but without enough of a plot to be rightly called a novel. The 1983 paperback New Canadian Library edition I read has handsome drawings by Walter Richards. First published in 1968, the book is apparently considered a classic by many. I found it to be like a prose poem with its lyrical look at everyday rural life. Buckler continually shifts focus from face to face and family to family. One gets kind of a Thornton Wilder "Our Town" feel from the pages. It spends a great deal of time appreciating nature. I found it difficult to get through. Buckler impresses the reader as one being in love with words, which is fine as long as they communicate.Some of the passages are overly long such as this one from pp. 107-8 in the edition I had:"Or when you simply undid the top button of his reefer to brush away the cold shoulder of snow that had slumped on him from a spruce bough grazed by the side posts of the trail sled and, touching the warm artless flesh of his neck where it curved upward into his head, felt a sigh of tenderness that was so completely different from the gust in your blood whatever night you'd made him."While there are sections that amuse and engage, overall it was with a sense of relief that the memoir concluded. If you're looking for prose in which something happens, look elsewhere. If you're looking to enjoy nature, why not just go to a meadow? I know this work is highly regarded in Canada. First, our trip to the Seychelles was fantastic and this review is for the Seychelles only. With the amount of beauty present on La Digue and Praslin, the book has very little descriptions of this. Some information about alcohol use among the Seychellois are plain wrong, as well as boating companies. This makes you doubt the quality of the background study done for the book. Information on history, nature and culture is not at the level needed for an educated adult, with more information found on your first google search. The review of restaurants on Praslin is not representative of what you actually will get and the lack of any negative reviews in general is surprising, almost as to not step on any toes. Most resorts get positive reviews, but the differences between them are much larger than presented in the book (at least the ones we visited). Covers a bare minimum that an experienced traveller will figure out on their own without any guidance. Used to better guides than this from Lonely Planet. Seychelles should be re-examined and re-written.

These destinations are mostly about white sand beaches, palm trees, and crystal-clear blue water. This guide covers those things, and the various resorts, hotels and restaurants that complement those things, very well. But there's more.If you're interested in the history and culture of the islands, this book has you covered in that department too. Actually, it is this quality that makes the guide so good. You get a complete picture of the islands, and the book constantly reminds you that there's more to do here than lay on the beach. This is particularly true in sophisticated little Reunion, which is a fully-integrated legal department of France.Coverage is absolutely exhaustive, both geographically and for listings of hotels and restaurants. Recommendations are surprisingly candid, and critical where appropriate. That's a refreshing escape from travel guides that fill the "everything is good in its own way" formula.Tie all this up with nice historical and cultural contexts, and a section of practical matters that is perhaps a wee bit thin, and you've got a pretty darn good guide.

Of the three locations covered by this book, I can only attest to the Reunion portion of it, but I have to say, this was a very useful guide to an island with very few English language resources. While a bit brief in content (compared to the French edition, which has about three times as much content, and is solely dedicated to Reunion), the content was accurate and covered most of the major hikes, locations, and restaurants.

A personal must have for scouting out a country/city before travel. Sure internet information if more timely but I like the feel of a book in my hand and the reminder of trips past looking at the spines of the book on my travel shelf.

This book is beautiful, well written, and so inspiring! Jeffrey Dungan is amazingly talented (one of the great architects of our time) and you'll want to own this book for yourself. I will warn you...you'll get lost in all the breathtaking images, swoon over Jeffrey's designs, and close the book dreaming of living in such a home. This is a treasure you'll want in your collection!

Completely inspired by the beautiful images! I was challenged as a designer by the call to create meaningful and thought through spaces that stir emotion with the use of real authentic materials. I love that his inspiration is driven from nature and that it's heavily considered in his architecture. His homes nestle in with their environment. Everything in this book is stunning!

This is a very fine book! Ray Booth, Bobby McAlpine ..... and deep south influence ... what else??!

Outstanding in every category!!I am a big fan of Jeffrey’s work so when I heard about this book, I pre-ordered it an anticipated its arrival for months!! It truly is a wonderful collection of some of his most adorned projects! Every page will make you stop and ponder and daydream of life in the perfectly designed home.

I love this book and getting into the mind of this architect/ designer. The forward is so beautifully written and as a nature girl I totally align myself with Jeffrey’s aesthetic. This is a beautiful book- and I’m proud to add it to my collection of coveted designer coffee tablebooks- that I read cover tocover.

The photography is amazing in this book and the authors story is good as well...a great book to read and enjoy
