Silverman takes the reader on a very personal and emotionally intense journey. Her prose is lyric and beautiful. Her in-the-moment attention to detail-- we follow her gaze, both externally and internally--pulls the reader in, and allows us to walk the path beside the narrator. We can't help but see bits of ourselves and our own struggles on the page.I did not see the movie, as I am always afraid that they might ruin it, so I can't speak to that. For me, the beauty of the writing is so intermingled with the narrative that I wouldn't want to dilute the experience, but the story is so powerful I'm glad the movie exists in order to reach a larger audience. This is a subject matter not often talked about, or written about, yet it touches many of us on different levels.
This book is much better than the film. It gives a personal account of the grips of addiction and the internal resistance to sobriety. Most importantly it depicts that compulsively seeking out a fix has nothing to do with the fix satisfying the need. Because the book is set in part during the course of the authors life when she is seeking treatment there is a wealth of insight of understanding the struggle to comprehend love for a person who survived childhood sexual abuse. This book is an important read for anyone struggling to have a healthy relationship after overcoming trauma.
The book was harrowing, as was the author's life, but gratifying to see she'd made such progress in stabilizing her better intuitions, her better self. It was an amazing journey, for the author, and for all of us who were along with her. There's this, too — her psychiatrist deserves gold medals — for his insight, his diligence, his refusal to give up on this patient. And when I say harrowing, I don't mean that as a put-down, or an accusation. The author didn't choose to have this very difficult condition, but she did ultimately choose to move away from its influence. I say to her, I'm so glad you were so strong. Clearly the condition was powerful, alarmingly powerful, but that's what makes her story so impressive. To her psychiatrist,,, you're who and what we want in a health care provider. To the author's family: you also get praise and credit. I'd say that anyone dealing with borderline personality disorder, or any other extremely difficult situation, could find strength and motivation here. I was very impressed with the book and glad I read it.
I found out about this book through watching the movie on Lifetime. I knew I had to read it because I struggle with the same issue myself and wanted to learn more information. I could relate on so many levels and felt she accurately portrayed the emotions and thoughts that go on during the "addict self." I enjoyed learning about her personal journey through counseling and building herself from the ground up at a rehabilitation center for Sex/ Love Addicts. She narrated her story in a journaling sort of way that was new and fresh. The book was well written and took humbling courage to be able to put such deep, painful experiences out in the open for everyone to read.I suggest everyone read this book to get a new perspective on another kind of addiction that is very different from alcohol or drugs. Also, watch the movie on Lifetime...it is very good!
Throughout this book and her previous book, I felt myself transported. Sue William Silverman's mastery of the craft of writing is incredible. So much so, that it compelled me to journey through the horrors of childhood trauma and its chilling repercussions of sexual addiction. On each page, I felt her vulnerability and desperation and led me into the book so completely that the story began to feel personal. I have the utmost respect for any survivor who takes on the challenge of discovery of themselves, especially when it leads to subject matter borderlining on madness. The courage that it takes for one to walk through the darkness and emerge an intact person is such a rarity. To combine that courage with such written eloquence so that we may accompany her, is just beyond words.Thank you, Sue for bringing us your story. It is evident how hard you've worked to become the incredible woman and author that you are.
A stunningly beautiful book about a topic that many would struggle to even wrap their heads around. Silverman's prose is intoxicating and lyrical, her journey honest and harrowing. So many times I want to shake her, but that's part of the point. I've never read a story of addiction that truly captured what it must feel like while in the grip of it. This is an important memoir.
An absolutely wonderful book! I loved the writing and the voice. Although I have never personally suffered from sex addiction, I have had other struggles and the author's journey to sobriety is one I could connect with. I feel like I have grown alongside the author while reading this book and feel a better, enriched person for it. Cannot wait for a sequel to find out how she does post-rehab. I also think this book would make a brilliant movie.
Sue William Silverman reveals herself so honestly, I can only admire her. It seems trite to say she is "courageous" but yet cannot think of a better word. (I don't think I'd be able to do it!) And she does it with so much insight that telling it all has a real purpose and is not self pity. She clearly has come through a lot and is to be commended for sharing her newfound insight with those of us who are too good at hiding the truth to get proper help! I spent some years living a sexually compulsive life and have found the path away from it to be long. At this point I can't even recognize myself, I've changed so much, but still found reading this book to be very healing and affirming, and that her insight helped clarify some issues that have come up for me, as I deal with the truth.
