FIERCE is the sequel to BRUTAL, a novel which I felt was one of my favorites from last year's releases. The premise of the novel is familiar to ones of Conan the Barbarian and King Kull: a brutal mercenary has strangled the leader of a prosperous kingdom, only to become king himself. However, he is a figure who offends the corrupt and decadent nobility and they turn to sorcery in order to usurp him. It is a tale which James Alderice puts his own spin on while simultaneously paying homage to the classic Sword and Sorcery epics of old.Gathelaus is a great character who is skeptical of gods, hardened, but possessed of a softer side that allows him to bond with multiple characters. He has quite a few similarities to Conan but is a (slightly) more civilized individual who is actually closer to the Howardian depiction of the man than the typical treatment of the Cimmerian in adaptations. He is intelligent and learned, for example, but self-educated across a very hard road.I did have one objection to the story and that was the treatment of a character from the previous novel that I was quite fond of and was hoping to see more of. Still, that didn't ruin my overall enjoyment of the book. James Alderice weaves a fascinating tale of blood, revenge, savages, corrupt aristocracy, pirates, and demigods. I think anyone who loves tales involving mighty thews and swinging blades will enjoy this work.Awesome story and I've already preordered the next volume.
I have admittedly been a fan of the sword and sorcery genre since I was a kid. Reading The Savage Sword of Conan and watching movies like the Lee Horsley "classic" The Sword and the Sorcerer was my idea of a great time. Fierce doesn't disappoint and is a worthy sequel to one of the better books I read last year, Brutal. You can definitely see the Robert Howard influence in this book and for some reason I continuously pictured the protagonist, Gathelaus, in my head as looking like the Conan you would see in comics and magazines. Fierce is what a S&S story should be; fun to read. One small detail I really liked was how each chapter had its own title. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the third book in the trilogy soon.
Book two is just as good as book one. Or hero find new adventure as death stalks his every turn. We get to meet new characters and explore new world. I really enjoyed this book.
Not as good as the first book but still a solid read. The first book was more mysterious, this book lacked the 'who the heck is this guy?' aspect of the first and was more or less just a decent heroic fantasy story.
I really enjoyed this. Plenty of action. Unlike the first book in this trilogy which took place in a single city, this story takes you to the far corners of the world. Looking forward to the sequel.
This book was even more manly and brutal than the first. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves heavy action and splattering blood.
Been waiting for this book for months was well ,well worth the aWait and money. Once again I am waiting!
Fierce builds upon the lore established in the preceding installment, weaving a fantastic Conan-esque story. More that that, though, it presents great strides in writing quality, character development, pacing, and exposition. Definitely incentive to continue with the series and the world it unfolds within.
