Review

Praise for the previous edition: "Professor Bruce M. Metzger. . . remains the dean of New Testament textual criticism. For more than thirty years his encyclopedic knowledge and prolific pen have kept New Testament scholars current in manuscript studies. . . . Other manuals in textual criticism are now available, but none is more serviceable than Metzger's."--Southwestern Journal of Theology"The fourth edition may be declared an unqualified success. The authors have evidently gone over every line of text with great care, [and] those paragraphs that have been rewritten seem to be genuine improvements. The appearance of this revised edition is a delight, and it assures that The Text of the New Testament will continue to serve students and scholars for a long time to come."--Westminster Theological Journal"Well-researched and expressed, with that rare elegance of style that graces the English language. It is a model for scholarly endeavor, as well as the definitive text in English on the subject."--Louis I. Hodges, Columbia Bible College and Seminary"The best in its field. Indispensable!"--Jarl Fossum, University of Michigan

There is no equal to Metzger's (and now Ehrman's) official textbook of textual criticism. It is a full scholarly account about the subject that defines the field. For the most part, the book has to be viewed as a textbook and a reference, not a bit of light reading. For that reason, if you arereading this to gain familiarity with the subject rather than practicing textual criticism, there are some parts that would be best to skim, rather than read every last detail. An example is chapter 2, with mind-numbing delineation of manuscript after manuscript. Some of the earlier manuscripts mentioned are good to pay attention to (and all of them, if you are doing this as a profession). The chapters are as follows:1. The Making of Ancient Books2. Important Witnesses to the Text of the New Testament3. The Precritical Period: The Origin and Dominance of the Textus Receptus4. The Modern Critical Period: From Griesbach to the Present5. The Origins of Textual Criticism as a Scholarly Discipline6. Modern Methods of Textual Criticism7. The Causes of Error in the Transmission of the Text of the New Testament8. History of the Transmission of the Text of the New Testament 9. The Practice of New Testament Textual CriticismAll of the subjects covered has a crucial bearing on textual criticism, so if one has more than a passing interest in that field, this book is well worth reading, and can explain much of why the Bible has so many alternative readings, and how one can discern what is the more probable of likely readings. The concern about Ehrman taking up the torch from Metzger will come obviously from those who do not like someone in authority over the field whose faith has been disturbed by the textual problems and origins. Simply put, this bears no relation to Ehrman's ability to perform the task at hand, and to do it with his characteristic sagacity.

For those wanting to dive into the highly technical discipline of textual criticism as it pertains to the New Testament (NT), this book is an excellent place to start. Both Metzger and Ehrman bring a wealth of knowledge and insight into the intricacies of NT text criticism. They survey the historical development of text criticism as a discipline begun to preserve ancient, Greek and Roman texts and then as it relates to the NT.When Metzger and Ehrman delve into NT text criticism, they provide an excellent rundown of the important textual witnesses to the Greek text of the NT (see pp 53-92) in addition to the methodology involved in this discipline (essentially the rest of the book). The concluding chapter is a gem as the coauthors demonstrate how one does text criticism with key passages of the NT.One more tidbit, this book by Metzger and Ehrman is much more current than The Text of the New Testament by Aland and Aland. That being said, the latter book is a good supplement to the Metzger/Ehrman work with respect to the manuscripts of the NT. The Alands list way more witnesses, but their methodology has been rendered obsolete since the publication of the Editio Critica Maior (ECM).

Arrived on time and as described. This was my textbook at seminary and have referred to it many, many times since then. Gave this one I bought through Amazon to someone who appreciated it.

Another treasure that you can add to your library.

More Christians need to read this book and other works by Metzger. We can't really understand the New Testament without having an understanding of how it came to exist in its present state - this book provides that foundation.

This is a very technical book that is well-worth reading for anyone who wants to have a deeper understanding of the Bible's text. It seems as if almost all of the bases are covered in this one.

I recommend this book for those who are interested in the text behind the New Testament. I enjoyed reading it and may well refer back to it as needed.

A clear, organized, and eminently readable description (it's more than an introduction on the topic) of the history of the New Testament texts. The authors maintain a neutral attitude towards the difficult (for theologically conservative readers) passages that seem to contain obvious actual errors (such as the quote in Matt. 27:9 attributed to Jeremiah, when most of the content actually comes from a passage in Zechariah) which occurred in earlier manuscripts but were changed in later manuscripts to "fix" the discrepancy (many other variant readings occurred through simple and accidental copying errors). The authors record how the issue caused changes in later manuscripts, but avoid commenting on how this affects one's view of inerrancy/infallibility. And for a book like this, the authors take the right approach. Metzger and Ehrman are top-notch New Testament scholars, who themselves hold different theological viewpoints on biblical inspiration, but put those differences aside to produce a terrific, scholarly book on the subject. Regardless of one's view of biblical infallibility, any reader will be greatly enlightened by this top-notch book.
