Ernest Buckler's "Ox Bells & Fireflies" is a pastoral memoir. It is fictional but without enough of a plot to be rightly called a novel. The 1983 paperback New Canadian Library edition I read has handsome drawings by Walter Richards. First published in 1968, the book is apparently considered a classic by many. I found it to be like a prose poem with its lyrical look at everyday rural life. Buckler continually shifts focus from face to face and family to family. One gets kind of a Thornton Wilder "Our Town" feel from the pages. It spends a great deal of time appreciating nature. I found it difficult to get through. Buckler impresses the reader as one being in love with words, which is fine as long as they communicate.Some of the passages are overly long such as this one from pp. 107-8 in the edition I had:"Or when you simply undid the top button of his reefer to brush away the cold shoulder of snow that had slumped on him from a spruce bough grazed by the side posts of the trail sled and, touching the warm artless flesh of his neck where it curved upward into his head, felt a sigh of tenderness that was so completely different from the gust in your blood whatever night you'd made him."While there are sections that amuse and engage, overall it was with a sense of relief that the memoir concluded. If you're looking for prose in which something happens, look elsewhere. If you're looking to enjoy nature, why not just go to a meadow? I know this work is highly regarded in Canada.
