The drug addicts, scientists, mayors, social workers and all the rest mostly speak for themselves, but the author is not afraid to frame someone's statement with historical context or offer a tart or sympathetic personal observation. As an American Foreign Service Officer (career diplomat), I lived in eight countries. I wish I could have read a book like *Putin Country* about each of them before I got there.

They need a "strong man" in charge or they are completely lost. This is an excellent read and gives some great insight into many aspects of daily life in rural Russia, and how the people there think.

From the terrible battles around Guadalcanal through the final surrender in Tokyo Bay, DesRon 21 was there almost every step of the way. The book tells the story of the various ships which made up the squadron, some in more detail than others, by using personal recollections of those who were there and official ship records. The tales cover a gamut of missions: convoy escorts, night-time bombardments, anti-submarine actions, invasion bombardments, rescue of fellow sailors and/or airmen, picket duty and of course, naval combat. The squadron's actions around Guadalcanal, The Slot and the other Solomon Isles take up about half the book and comprise the majority of the naval combat, followed by events in New Guinea, the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.As you read about the exploits of of DesRon 21, you'll not only learn about the horrors of naval combat in the Pacific, but you’ll learn about the brave men who came from all parts of the U.S. to serve their country. The book is filled with small vignettes from a variety of men who served, and these stories are woven nicely into the greater narrative. Some ships didn’t see much action as they joined at later dates or had shorter lives than their counterparts, but nearly all are represented in some depth at one point.The book does a great job of discussing the growth of the U.S. Navy from its shoestring days off Guadalcanal through the end of the war when it was the mightiest navy to ever sail the oceans. Along the way there are changes in commanders, tactics and weapons which helped make the final victory possible, although sometimes the changes didn’t always work out for the best.This book will really give you a feel for life about a destroyer and makes a great companion of Wukovits’ other works on naval combat. Definitely worth picking up!

A Mixed BagThis book gave a nice overview of the operations of a group of American destroyers in the Pacific in WW2. The writing is a tad melodramatic, but tolerable to this reader. If I could score it using half stars, this narrative history of a Destroyer Squadron 21 would be a solid 3 1/2; since I can't, I'll rate it a 3. Why not higher? Two reasons.First, while the book goes into detail on a number of surface actions involving the destroyers of Desron 21, the only maps are 2 general maps, one of the Solomon Islands and one of the Pacific as a whole. The surface actions get zip. Pull out Morison if you want to understand them.Second, I found numerous, mostly minor, errors and omissions in the sections describing the actions in the Solomons. None are major but cumulatively they were aggravating. For example; The Fletcher class DD (all the ships in the squadron were from this class)AA armament claimed on p13 is what the ships might have carried in 1945, certainly not 1942; IJN BB's used at Guadalcanal only had 14" main guns, not 12" and 14" (p.28); the "Tokyo Express" IJN DD's were not escorting transports to Guadalcanal every night, they were the ones transporting the Japanese troops and supplies (with very rare exceptions)(p.35); the IJN did not inflict an unbroken string of naval defeats on the USN prior to the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal(p.51)-Admiral Scott beat them at Cape Esperance just a month earlier; the IJN BB Hiei could not have hit the USN's DD O'Bannon with 8" rounds (p.55) for she didn't carry weapons that size; the USN lost three DD's in the second night of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, not 4 (p.64-and curiously the author correctly reports that the IJN lost 2 ships that night but fails to mention the key point that one of them was the BB Kirishima, whose loss ended Japanese efforts to knock out Henderson Field by naval bombardment.). There were more, but this gives you an idea. Gaffes like these bug me.

Well-known World War II historian John Wukovits was written an excellent account of Desron 21; a group of destroyers that fought from Guadalcanal to Tokyo Bay.When the fighting broke out on Guadalcanal in August, 1942, the American Navy was still short on larger ships, such as cruisers and battleships. The industrial might of the United States was beginning to stir, but hadn't yet kicked in to high gear. As a result, Admiral William "Bull" Halsey had to utilize his destroyers as a means of fighting the Japanese on the sea. Desron 21, which included the USS Fletcher, USS O'Bannon, and USS Nicholas, provided support for merchant ships, shelled enemy positions ashore, and attacked Japanese ships, including battleships and cruisers.These "tin cans" helped the American Navy hold the line until the larger battleships and cruisers started making their way to the Pacific theater. The men aboard these ships were young; many in their teens and early twenties, but they soon formed themselves into well-rounded and deadly crews. These men were at general quarters for hours on end with little or no rest, but they fought with great tenacity. The men and ships of Desron 21 fought for the Solomons and Guadalcanal, New Guinea, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and led the American Navy into Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender. Several of the cans of Desron 21 earned Presidential Unit Citations for their heroic actions.John Wukovits has written several fine books about the Pacific War, and I've read each of his earlier works. "Tin Can Titans" continues with his excellent manner of discussing battles of the Pacific War. The book is loaded with great information, including testimonies from the sailors who actually fought aboard these destroyers as well as letters and diaries of the men. Many of the preeminent battles of the Pacific War are discussed, and a fine epilogue tells about the men post-war. Highly recommended.

Reading this book helps you fully visualize the fretboard and gives you some quick an easy exercises that you can run once a practice session (or more) to fix notes in your mind.

I've been playing a guitar for 40 years. I didn't think I would learn much from this very short book. In fact, I have to be truthful and say I knew easily half of the material. Having said that, I've never read a book where the relationship of the fretboard was so clearly easily both explained and accessed. This book is genuinely a gym. The few exercises offered in the text will speedily provide you the a fast and accessible read of every fret and note on the fretboard. Never before have I jumped from one string to the next so quickly locate the exact tone! Definitely use the metronome suggestion, it is both fun and rewarding.

I feel Joesph Alexander is a very good teacher. I also have: "The CAGED System & 100 Licks for Blues Guitar" which is an incredible piece of work; so I would expect "Guitar: How to Memorize the Fretboard" to be equal in every way. I can't stress enough the quality of teaching that Mr. Alexander displays. I haven't gotten too far into the book yet but I really like what I read. I'm looking forward the knowledge that will go a long way to improving my solo skills. A must have...

I've had several guitar how to books in my day. The system described here still demands a learning curve of scale practice and flash card memorization. Would have been better if it came with flash cards, but you get what you pay for I guess. You won't master the fret board overnite, but if you apply the system, you will eventually get the gist of finding the notes you want.

I'm about halfway through the book (going slower because I'm working my way through it) and find it extremely clear and very well-written. I played guitar in high school and a bit of college but never got beyond learning a few basic chords, strums, fingerings and the most rudimentary of melodies. The few times I attempted to learn music theory, it was presented in such an arcane fashion I quickly gave up, figuring that it was really only important to music majors. This time around, while Mr. Alexander's focus in this book isn't music theory per se, it comes through very clearly and in a most comprehensible way. The exercises so far have been very clear and logical in their progression.

Finally, a book on the guitar fretboard for players who don't already have a strong grasp of theory! I'm self-taught and ear-trained. I've tried books like this before but learned little. But this book is so well written and so easy to follow my fundamental understanding of how notes/chords connect to each other, and how to move around the fretboard while staying in key, has improved dramatically. The author's teaching style was easy to understand and easy to transfer to the fretboard. I'm grateful and will be buying more of Mr. Alexandar's books. Thanks, Joe!

As it was...I chose drums as my main instrument which had its advantages. As the drummer, the band practiced at my house and I was always playing someones guitar on the off days. Eventually I bought my own. While I knew how to read music from studying mallet percussion, the fretboard never made sense to me. The only criticism I have of this book is that I wish I had read it sooner. It was recommended to me by a Stephen King fan that caught on to his brilliance as an author before I did. When I asked which King novel I should read next, he replied "in an election year, The Dead Zone of course". So happy I took his recommendation. It is eerie how relevant so much of this novel is given that it was 40+ years ago. Well developed, well written, several twists, I missed the characters being part of my day when I finished. Highly recommend this book, especially when we have an election coming our way! It would be interesting to see the same story told with the invention of social media and all news all the time.

It's Stephen King. You either like his writing, or you're not even reading this review, because you'd never buy something of his. I saw that some other reviewers complained that this book was slow-paced or boring. I did not find that to be the case, but the thing I've always loved most about King's writing is the care he puts into crafting his characters. They are real people, who live on in your mind, with all their virtues and flaws. For the ultimate example of this, I always cite King's The Stand, whether we're talking about Stephen King or not. Masterful. Just masterful. So, I didn't mind that we didn't jump right into the precognition stuff. I had watched the movie with Christopher Walken many years ago (I know, sacrilege to watch the movie first.), as I slowly built up my King library (ultimate goal--everything King has ever written), but hadn't read the book until now. I don't remember how the movie wrapped things up, so am trying not to write any spoilers, but that intense character building King does paid off in a big way at the end. I was wrecked, emotionally wrecked, and cursing Stephen King's name, even as I was saying, "So good. So freaking good. You got me again, Mr. King."The takeaway is that, if you have a King section in your library, this deserves to be in it. If you're a King fan and haven't read this, you should. If you feel like I do, that one of King's greatest strength is his character development, then, I think you'll enjoy this.

Readability: Moderate to Easy. Full of common language: relatable phrases and cliché's. Simple, clear language. Explicit words found throughout.Novel Premise: Interesting! If you could travel back in time and kill Hitler, knowing what you know now, would you? Similarly, if you knew a politician running for office today would be the cause of the end of the world, would you assassinate said politician? And what would it be like if you were put into a coma, only to wake up years later, your life forever altered? There is an interesting romantic element to the novel, though tragic, and not the central topic.Overall Impression: You'll be sucked in by the novel, though not right away. Give it 25 pages. Once King has you in his grips, per usual, you will not be able to put the book down. There are better King books. However, this novel treats death and relationships (past and present) with an interesting spin due to the supernatural and psychological premise. This book is not as scary as it is intense, not as horrific as it is the kind of book to stick a block of dread in the middle of your stomach, page per page.Literary Merit: None. This is a genre novel, by an author at the top of his genre. Compared to his better works, this ranks higher than, say, books like 'The Tommyknockers' or 'Gerald's Game', but does not come close to novels like 'The Shining' or 'The Stand' where literary methods are in better representation.The Bottom Line: Great for a Stephen King fan. Great for someone who is interested in the premise. Great for someone looking for an easy, relatable read. Not for someone who is a horror-novel junkie, you'll be underwhelmed. Not for someone who dislikes thriller novels, you might get queasy. I liked the book and rated it four stars out of five.

I'm not sure why I've given this 4 stars. King's reputation? The fact that I normally enjoy his books, late to them though I am? there's a half decent story somewhere in this, but....... I found it structurally dissatisfying, the whole somewhat spoilt by character storylines dealt with too early, and too randomly to fit within the whole book. I always go along with King's foray into the unknown in order to accept the storyline, disregarding my personal beliefs. And this book was no different, only I didn't buy his approach to reveals and character portrayals, as they were ordered in the story. It was uneven, and heavy handed. But should I dare criticise? And at this late stage. Yes, it WAS the least satisfying King story that I've read to date, but the John Smith main character was well set and meaningful. As I've hinted, it was the unfolding of the story that perplexed me, that relating to one character simply not blended sufficiently well into the whole. It didn't fit. His role was of no substance to what went before, when at last we arrived at his relevance. So, disappointed? Yes. This time round.

I did everything he mentioned and my acne is 90% gone after a month. I'm so impressed with this book! There were so many things I've never heard of. More people should definitely know about this book!

First off i want to say whoever left the one star review must be a Russian bot because this book was amazing. Read the whole book in a day (wasn’t long) and started doing what the author said. Been 2 weeks and my acne is already 50% gone. I’m really excited!!The only thing I wish is he went more in depth into some of the techniques he talks about. Besides that though, very happy with my purchase.

Great content, excellent detail and wonderful illustrations that aid understanding. This acne guide could go head-to-head with any other competitive program or treatment and reign Supreme as I saw very good results with simplistic solutions. Highly recommend.

This is a very short book written by a gentleman who is just giving advice on what worked for him. I 100% agree with him that the dermatologist route does not work. It is very costly and only makes matters worse. I have been to at least 20 different dermatologists that prescribed everything under the sun. They all made me sick or just ruined my skin. It is definitely worth the read, and it was free.

A win-win! I lost weight, feel great, and the food is fabulous. I am a huge fan of Ms Davila's guacamole. It is a staple in our house. I also love the Piña Colada smoothies. Feels like Cancun every time I have it yet it is healthy and full of protein.She also introduced me to the concept of healthifying my breakfast. I would usually have poached or fried eggs on toast. Since reading this book I have replaced the toast with a rotating variety of healthy vegetables. Today we will have sautéed onions and spinach; two fried eggs on top; avocado on the side and delicious salsa. MUCH better tasting than my old alternative of eggs on toast. And the change in this habit has allowed my to loose nearly 20 lbs in the last year.

A wonderful diet book, with a good take on the problems many in the West have today, namely, too much gluten, as well as oils and other fats.The book is targeted towards an Hispanic-American audience, who as a group wrestle with obesity, based mainly on their traditional diet. This was accompanied by digestive issues as well as fatigue which she eventually traced to gluten and sugar based foods. Overcoming these problems and regaining her energy led to the writing of this book as well as a nutrition consulting business and several related products.After reading the book I decided to try one of the recipes, it was delicious and satisfying. But unfortunately, that included cooking with lots of fat, starch and other unhealthy ingredients. This book reworks those recipes in a way that they are actually MORE delicious, but without the bad stuff ! The author does a good job of telling her own story of how she THOUGHT she was living a healthy lifestyle, but was missing the boat. This is a good primer of what do right if you want to clean up your act while not feeling like you are depriving yourself of yummy food.

Nice yummy recipes for those of us who love Mexican food. It is a great addition to any cooking library and I have never been on a "diet", I just love to eat good heathy food. Maru, the author, is a delight if you get the good fortune to see her on TV.

I've seen this lady, Maru Davila, on television more than once and the food from these receipts looks really great, and easy and fun to make. So, I expect to eat happy saying, "Adios extra pounds. Thanks but, no thank you fat gut." I admit I am an avocado lover, then mix in that other stuff and WOW. TW
