Such a lovely Marguerite Henry horse story for kids 6-10 or so! I read these 50 years ago in 25-cent book club paperbacks and am now buying these great hardcover copies for my 7-year-old granddaughter who is horse crazy. She has read Justin Morgan Has a Horse and is now on Misty. These are so terrific; all kids should read them. I have studied children's literature all my life, and M. Henry is tops in the horse fiction field after all these years. Even if the grandfather's speech may seem a little quaint to modern ears, the story is so worthwhile, and the way those kids love those horses is so real, and the horse behavior is so true, that you are transported as a reader into their world. A bonus is the little explanation in each book about the beginnings of the horse colony at Assateague Island, and the history of the pony penning days. Author Henry notes in each book, by the way, that all characters in the book are real, and she lists them on an inside page, thanking them all! One fly in the ointment is a dating issue (1949), and that is the discrepancy of the two juvenile characters, who are brother and sister. They act equally and are treated equally--except in the pony penning events, in which girls are not allowed to compete. I assume that is no longer the case, but that occurrence would need to be discussed with young readers. Overall, a gem of a book for animal story lovers, horse lovers in particular, and, really, anyone who loves a good story.

As with all of the Books about Misty and the BeeBees, this book is filled with charm, excitement, authentic emotion and beauty. We have so loved reading about the BeeBees and Pony Ranch, and we are so sorry that we have now read all of the stories about Misty of Chincoteague. Now I guess we will reread them!

Granddaughter loved this book and read it from cover to cover a day.

Classic series about ponies who live on an island and the girl and boy who take care and raise them. Best for an intermediate beginner reader, I bought the whole series as it's a continuation storyline...

I got to see the "Little Ponies" in the Chincoteague area while we lived in southwestern Pennsylvania and that was such a treat!!My great aunt had a book about the "Little Ponies" on her book shelf and to actually see the ponies, I was thrilled to see all of theponies as they frolicked in the water.

10 year old Daughter LOVES this book with all her tiny loving heart! Daddy hit a home run buying this for his little Gracie Joy.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book; I am from the area where the majority of the story takes place and the author has definitely captured the essence of the "Land of Enchantment." The characters and the landscape have a strong connection, and even though the characters are mostly young adults they were relatable and interesting. (I think I would have really enjoyed reading this when I was in high school as well.) The drone action and the motorcycle parts makes the story exciting and relevant and make you want to see what happens next. My favorite part is the layered nature of the book; the subtle moral underpinnings of the character's motivations are what drive the book, and ultimately make it a heartfelt, conquering, and enjoyable read.I would recommend this book specifically to young adults, anyone who has ever lived in the southwest, and anyone who needs the inspiration to take the bull by the horns and not merely survive this life, but thrive.

Wonderful characters and stunning prose! This book is by turns warm, chilling, funny, and heart breaking. The writing, the hard, real choices faced by Arlo, and the perfectly painted setting of northeastern New Mexico are all perfect. A really great read!

In Dirt Bikes, Drones, and Other Ways to Fly this author has taken what is actually a very time worn premise and used it as the basis for a story that is surprisingly original and very exciting. We've all read stories and seen movies about the young teen video game master who gets recruited by the government/abducted by aliens/kidnapped by terrorists because he is just so good at video games he can totally change the world. Arlo Santiago is that good at Drone Pilot, which turns out to be a video game that uses the same technology as the government. When White Sands comes calling, Arlo is drawn into the hunt for terrorists and must examine his own feelings about war and what he wants to do with his life. If that was all there was to this story, then I would certainly not be giving this book five stars. Fortunately, there's a lot more to this novel that will speak to young readers with a voice that is unerringly authentic, action that is top notch, and a heart as big as the sky.Arlo is an adrenaline junkie. When he's not playing Drone Pilot, speeding off to White Sands to work with the military, or performing daring motorcycle jumps, this kid is sky diving. Yep, there's a little bit of everything in this book. Amidst all this action and adventure, Arlo is also dealing with the death of his mother, a father who seems determined to drown his sorrows in a bottle, and a sister with a degenerative, ultimately fatal disease. Add in a new girl who steals his heart, and you get a novel packed with emotion. This novel offers up some truly perceptive and poignant observations on family, love and grief. These characters are so complete and complex that they will steal your heart, spark your imagination and leave you wondering what you would do in their situations.I thoroughly enjoyed this author's portrayal of rural New Mexico. He really captured the spirit of the country without bogging down the narrative. The reader is left with a real sense of the beauty present in this land, so much so that the setting seems to become another character in the story. I first heard about this book when I read the following review on about.com:http: // visualbasic . about.com / od / vbbooks / fr / Br9780735661707.htmIt piqued my interest, despite my being retired, and having known for some years that I would never be interested in becoming manager of software projects -- definitely moot at this point! Many years ago, I dipped my little piggies into project leadership (not even real management!),and have remained emotionally scarred ever since.When I started reading this book, my initial reaction was that the author was a self-centered, opinionated, arrogant jerk with way too much self-confidence. But then he's a relatively senior manager at Microsoft -- that's probably par for the course: he wouldn't be where he is if he wasn't capable nor full of confidence! His prose is, er, entertaining, and doesn't pull any punches -- intentionally so; he does it for effect, and to get a reaction (these were articles originally written for an internal publication at Microsoft). It took a while for me to get over this, and start listening to him (while gritting my teeth).I didn't find the first few chapters terribly absorbing, but I stuck with it, and gradually things started to get more interesting, until -- around Chapter 5 -- I found material I could really relate to.It was interesting to read in this book so many of the tenets that should have been followed at one of my former employers (a very large software company), but weren't. This book suggests very strongly that Microsoft has a much better handle than my former employer (a Microsoft competitor) had on how to develop software. Of course, I take with a giant pinch of salt how true the Microsoft characterization really is, from a very pro-Microsoft author. He talks in highly glowing terms about how Microsoft is the best company in the world, and such. However, he hits on so many points that I saw first-hand were weak points at my former employer. While things have probably changed there since I left, I suspect that they are still very undisciplined -- cowboys, to use the author's terminology.The book can be viewed at a number of levels:1) An insight into what happens inside Microsoft software development. Specific, but still interesting to anyone in the software industry.2) A "How To" book on managing teams of software developers -- the description is very Microsoft-specific, referring to terminology and tools used there, but pulling back a little, the advice could easily be used very profitably in other environments.3) A "How To" book for individual contributors on how to think and act in order to make the appropriate choices in career development, in Microsoft or any other reasonably well-informed software development organization. Also, to find out how enlightened (or otherwise) your current employer might be.It is well worth reading, if you are a software engineer/developer, a software designer/architect, or software development manager, or plan to be in any of these roles. It describes so many of the things you will have to deal with in any software development organization, not only in Microsoft. In fact, if you pull back a little bit further, much of the sage advice given is applicable to lots of different organizations, even outside of software development.Some points:The author is continually emphasizing -- quite correctly -- how it's critical for the software engineers and managers, et. al. to ensure that the customer has a delightful experience (the currently fashionable expression). That does not jibe with my experience of Microsoft products, which continue to annoy the heck out of me, from operating systems (Windows) which require me to continually update them to keep them working properly to the point where I spend more time doing that than real work, to installable products that have a less than "delightful" install experience.Towards the end of the book, the author compares Microsoft with Google and Apple, and predicts that Microsoft will beat them over time with continually improved products. Well, Apple is now a truly dominant player in the computer market, having been extremely successful designing and marketing its iPhone, iPod, iPad, and its various Mac computers. It is very clear that they have been far more successful with "delighting" customers than has Microsoft. His take on Google is also that it will fail w.r.t. Microsoft, but his arguments didn't convince me, and seemed to be overly Microsoft-centric. Things have moved on since the book was written, and I suspect his conclusions haven't born out. How they will continue is anyone's guess.Not an easy read, but recommended!==== Update, March 6, 2012 =====It just happened that the very next book I read after this one was Steven Johnson's "Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation" Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation. I was immediately struck by the difference in approach towards (and definition of) Innovation between Johnson's book and this one. I think that Eric Brechner would do well to read Johnson's book, to see the difference in approach to "Innovation" at Microsoft (at least what he describes), and that of Johnson's approach. Rather than elucidate this in more detail, I leave it to the reader (and Mr. Brechner) to do the necessary reading. Johnson's book gives a far more convincing argument for innovation at Google and Apple than does Mr. Brechner at Microsoft.

Eric Bechner's I. M Wright's "Hard Code:" A Decade of Hard Learned Lessons from Microsft is one of the three books that I read over my vacation. In the interest of full discloser this review is written for O'Reilly's Blogger Review program and this is a only a striaght review of the text; I will be looking at some of the ideas in the book in greater detail in later posts.Overall the book is great and is applicable to pretty much any software developer of any level and I especially feel that the book should be read by students who are interested in working in a large software development firm or the IT department of a large corporation.However, readers of the text should approach it with the understanding that they are not reading this text to learn how to develop software, but rather to learn how to navigate in the software development industry; i.e. you will not read anything about the intricasies of .NET, C#, or C++ in this book, but you will learn how to effectively interface with managers and co-workers.There are parts of the book of course that are very particular to Microsoft, but these sections are few and far between and still provide an interesting read and many of the lessons from the Redmond specific chapters can be applied to many other large organizations. This is a must read for anyone interested in advancing their software development career in a corporate environment or if you are just interested in seeing how software development works in large companies.

This book is about Mr. Erwin's vacation. He visits several National parks where he parks his car and with a very heavy backpack, walks a couple miles to a designated camp site, sets up his tent, goes to sleep, wakes up, "tears down" camp, walks back to his car and drives to the next stop.The book is poorly edited which made it difficult for me to read. Little things, like he says he can't see things far away because he is "farsighted." He does have a few mildly interesting experiences but I wouldn't think enough to write a book about.I appreciate the time and effort Mr. Erwin put into writing this story, and I hope it is a success for him.

Planning my own very similar solo road trip out West from Michigan for late May 2017, my chance encounter with this book was a godsend of awesome advice at the perfect time and so enjoyable it was like listening to stories from one of my backpacking buddies around the campfire. Having visited Great Smokey Mountains NP in late March 2017, the beginning of the book was easy to relate to and laugh along with. But it was the rest of the chapters I am so grateful for. Based on the suggestions here, I'll be deviating south to visit Grand Teton NP and Jackson Hole with a stop at Thermopolis Hot Springs on the way before continuing north to Yellowstone and Glacier NPs. Thanks for an excellent bedtime read over the past three nights and sharing these experiences. Prayers for no bears (or aggressive coyotes).

I was really hoping for more adventures out of this book, comedic encounters, something.... Really, it just sounded like an ordinary camping trip that any of us would have with minimal if any interesting adventures. Further, I wouldn't call much of it adventures in the wilderness, but really very accessible standard campsites in national parks. Perhaps it is the author's experience level. I figured he would be gone on long cross country adventures with all kinds of stories, but really it was a couple of major national parks where there were probably more tourists than locals. For me, it was a miss....

Having been to all the areas identified, this was a nice read to put myself back there in beautiful park land. Lucky for him that he had worked in the parks before. Might never have made that shower.

Book sounds like a really good read. My family and I travel all over in our camper van and I thought this would be a great book for my husband as this is something he longs to do! However, the narrative is very scrambled and not incredibly cohesive in its storytelling. Overall, it is ok, but better books out there for the adventure enthusiast without a plan.

Lost with Directions is one of the best books I have ever read! Once I started, I was unable to put it down until the end! Mr. Erwin's recount of his adventures across America will make you want to put on your hiking boots and leave your ho hum day to day life and have an adventure of your own. Not only is the story wildly funny, he includes many facts about the places he visited and wildlife he encountered with such detail that you feel as if you are along for the adventure! I highly recommend this book to anyone.

This book was excellent. Such a transparent tale of the trials and tribulations associated with unknown adventure. The comical banter amongst friends interlaced with beautiful descriptions of the surrounding environment is sure to capture the attention of anybody looking to get lost in the wilderness from the comfort of their home. Can't wait for his next book!

Everyone in our family got lots of laughs and smiles from this! We live near Yellowstone & can really relate- a fun quick read worth passing around.
