Not really useful if you are interested in cheese pairing and storing. Feels like a blog post than an actual book.

I was originally very intrigued by this book as when I was in culinary school I strongly considering going the cheese monger route. However this was not an easy read. Many times I felt very lost on what he was speaking of when it came to describing methods and history. Diagrams or pictures of tools would have made much of his descriptions of cheese tools and processes much easier to digest. His descriptions seemed to be a combination of scientific jargon and someone trying to describe something he doesn't necessarily know the name of the tool.I was somewhat relieved to finally get to a portion of the book that included recipes, but most that were included in the narrative seemed to be incomplete and hard to follow and assumed that the reader knew how to make sauces instead of describing how to make the sauces as part of the recipe. There was a list of recipes in the appendix that I had hoped had clearer recipes to the ones listed previously but alas most were different recipes, including a recipe for French Onion Soup that was completely different from the same soup recipe earlier in the book.The recipes within the book many times read as if a friend was trying to recall a favorite recipe versus a proper written recipe. And many of the "American" classic cheese recipes, as an American, I have never heard of, such as the "Frozen Cheese Ring". I can only assume that that dish was something popular when the first edition was released and the updates to the book did not included updating recipes to what are currently trending cheese recipes.The saving grace for me at least was that the actual cheese descriptions by country that were very in depth and informative. I would have liked (in the appendices) a chart of some sort that compared the various cheeses from countries or even listed from most pungent to blandest.

I requested this book with the thoughts it would help me in pairing cheeses with different foods and wines. The only area discussed briefly was the pairing of breads and certain cheeses so I was a little disappointed by this. This disappointment was quickly pushed aside as I continued to read and became absorbed in the information held inside the pages.The author gave a very detailed history of cheese not only in the actual world but also in literature. There was also a thorough discourse on the cheese making process. I have often wondered what exactly went in the making of cheese and thanks to this book I understand so much more. At first this process seems overwhelming, and I believe it isn’t a simple task, but it also seems as if the steps outlined are followed it would quickly become a routine of second nature. I also enjoyed how the author went into the specialties associated with different countries and what made them different from each other.To understand the cheese making process from beginning to end I highly recommend this book. It is very detailed and outlined giving the reader a clear picture to work with. If you want to understand more of the history of cheese then this is also a great book to invest in. If you are looking as I was to learn of pairing cheeses with other foods, then this is not the best option for you.I received this eBook in exchange for my review.

The Cheese Handbook by T.A. Layton (originally published as Choose Your Cheese in 1957 before being reformatted and retitled to include new recipes in November 2015) is a free NetGalley ebook that I read on a morning in December, just before finals week. Being somewhat familiar with cheese and having a few steadfast favorites (Gouda, manchego, aged Parmesan Reggiano), I thought I'd use this book to brush up on a few more.This book begins with historic references and odes to cheese, how cheese is made on a commercial level, and how cheese is served, before going into a huge reference guide of cheeses by country of origin and a smattering of recipes at the end. Overall, an okay book, very dated in its syntax, and not very well-adjusted for current tastes or more common pairings.

What a fascinating book, much more than I expected it to be. I started reading all the facts about cheese, its history, its keeping, the countries specialties - ( Australia does not have its own specialty one but copies -it did not say that "but we do it well" ) :)There are lot of recipes using cheese and a lot of food fact, and before I knew it I was at the end of the book wanting more. A really good informative book - no pictures but it does not really need them - it is a book that can stand on its own two feet.This book was provided in return for a honest and unbiased review.

This is an entertaining and imaginative take on the way of Witches and Warlocks plus other supernaturals. Poor Charlotte finds out shortly before she is to leave for Georgia University that not only is she a Witch but she has had a familiar staying in her backyard her whole life keeping her safe and oh Yeah, he is her gaming buddy from an online game she has been playing. Then, because of a mix up, she is to report to the Warlocks Academy where she is roommates with an incubus who is best friends with a vampire and the most popular, important boy at the Academy. I quite like Charlotte, she has a fun snarky outlook on life which she needs cuz the majority of the students and faculty really don't want her there. I was kept on the edge of my seat as mayhem and demons ensued. We are left on a cliffhanger and now need to get to book two to find out what happens. I recommend this series, it is a suspenseful, fun romance. Enjoy! 💚💜💛💙

Charlotte was an interesting MC. One day she finds out she is a wit h and her life is turned upside down. I liked that while she was powerful she didn’t just immediately have skills/control. I liked Alex, Firian, and Montague, but I’m on the fence about Harris, he did a couple things that really irritated me. At times I felt like the pacing was slow. I do think I will be looking to check out book 2, because I am intrigued by the world and characters.

Na. Paranormal. Mystery/Suspense. Rh. 4 guys. Multi POV Magical Academy setting. They do NOT have a insta bond. I would love to hit a few in the head with a shoe. Charlotte finds out she's half witch and has been excepted to a prestigious all boys school for warlocks. A incubus that's spelled not to touch her, a newbie vampire that has flash back memories of his lord, a not so new fox familiar, and a miserable warlock prince. Sounds fun right?

Plot twist upon plot twist kept this book charging forward at a nice steady pace, I enjoyed the unique storyline, which introduced wonderful protagonists with very interesting personalities. The story is just as playful as the blurb suggests. This is a fun read; I look forward to book 2.

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.I was really excited for this book. I’ve read multiple of this author’s books and most of those I really enjoyed. This sounded like it would be the start of another great reverse harem series. Unfortunately it just didn’t work for me. It fell flat with not enough of the things I wanted to see and it didn’t keep my attention. I kept hoping it would get better and grab me, but in the end it just didn’t.There were some good parts. I enjoyed the set-up with how Charlotte is a witch who under mysterious reasons get accepted into an all boy school. It was interesting to see how she found her place here and tried to make things work, but also had enough personality to stand up herself when she really wanted something. She was a likable enough character and the four boys who are her love interests all had their own personality and were easy to keep apart. Which was well done. Their relationship with Charlotte was also unique as I’ve grown to expect from this author’s previous books. And at the end when the romance really starts forming we get to see a bit of how they all interact with each other too. I also liked that it was a bit of a slow build, but it still felt relatively quick somehow.I think my main issue with the book was the pacing and the way things lacked depth/ impact. There are multiple important events and happening and it just felt like they got brushed over. Oh this happened and then the story just continued. I wanted to feel the impact of these events, how severe this was or how it impacted the characters. Instead the story just seemed to move on, important hints might come back and play a role later, but it didn’t feel like enough for me.Due to this the reveals and events lacked impact and the vibe of the book stayed so steady that eating dinner and summoning a demon felt like it had the same impact. Some events felt almost a bit rushed with the way the characters moved on again. It’s not a short book, I think it’s about 400 pages long, but at the same time it felt like there wasn’t enough happening. There are things that happen ofcourse, but I think with the events lacking the impact I was looking for, it felt like nothing mattered as strongly. At times it felt like nothing big happens and when something big happens it lacked impact.I also would’ve liked some mystery/ foreshadowing/ build-up throughout the book. There are some interesting things going on, with an important warlock dying, a teacher who might be hiding/ lying about something and Charlotte being accepted in this school under mysterious circumstances. But I felt like there was potential for more here, I didn’t feel engaged or excited about it as there wasn’t as much build-up and mystery surrounding it.While I liked most of the main character well enough, I never felt invested enough that I really cared for them in the way I had hoped. Charlotte has a difficult time adjusting to life in this all boy school and she gets bullied a bit. Luckily she has some guys who stick by her. Montague is a friendly and charming vampire with a bit of a struggle adjusting to his vampire side. Then there is Firian, her familiar who has watched over her for long and is now coming out of the shadows to stand behind her. Harris, who is quite frankly a bit rude and arrogant, but there are hints there is something more to him. And Alex who is Charlotte’s roommate, he’s an incubus who needs to learn control. I liked how different they all were. There are even some chapters form the boys their point of views. I just wanted more to really feel invested and connected and that was lacking.The romance is a bit of a medium build. Charlotte likes them all form the start, but it takes some time before she grows closer and only by the end of the book they even start dating for real. I liked that it took some time, but even then I wanted more scenes withe the guys and seeing her grow closer. I also didn’t feel fully comfortable with the situation with Firian, he is her familiar and later we find out he can’t go against her wishes, which just felt a wrong. It gives her power over him and he can’t go against her even he doesn’t believe in it because of their bond. And it also made the romance feel off to me, as he can’t love her if she doens’t love him and the way he got forced into the harem situation.The way the harem aspect was build worked well enough. I liked that they communicated about it and agreed on this and how it all made sense to them. Not all of the boys are in the hare yet, which leaves room for expanding in future books. I just didn’t like how Firian got added. It was clear he wasn’t on board with it, but had to be because Charlotte was, which didn’t work for me.I am glad I read two of the Brides of the Sinistral realms books before this one as I have the feeling it all takes place in the same world and having read those books it gave me a better understanding of this world already. I think this really helped as I thought the world building in this book was lacking a bit. And having a bit of background knowledge helped me form a better picture of the world. I was interested to see the opposing point of view in these books as the Sinistrals are the bad guys here. I just wanted more about the magic and the world so it could feel more alive. And more magic! This book is all about people with magic and there was very little actual magic being done. The parts that dealt with magic were interesting, so I wanted more of that.To summarize: I really wanted to like this book, but I didn’t. The premise was good, the characters likable enough and the four boys are different enough. But it felt like event slacked the depth and impact I wanted. The pacing felt weird, with things being rushed over, but at the same time it felt slow with not as much happening. There are some big reveals and events which lacked impact for me. The boys were different enough that it was easy to remember who was who and I liked it was a bit of a slower build-up, although I still didn’t fully feel the romances. It bothered me how Firian couldn’t go against Charlotte’s wishes as that felt wrong to me. I felt the world didn’t come as alive as I had hoped and I wanted more magic. Luckily I had a bit of a feel for the world thanks to having read two of the Brides of the Sinistral realms books. Sadly this book just wasn’t for me.

This was so frickin' cute! If a story about a witch-who-doesn't-know-she's-a-witch discovering she is one could be realistic, then this would be it. Charlotte's voice definitely sounds like an 18 year old girl, and so do the boys, for the most part. Which I liked; can't stand when kids/teenagers speak like wizened senior citizens. She also is cute, and has a stomach pooch (hey, me too! Haha), and is a gamer girl, not some supermodel.The way the guys fall for her feels like a natural progression, even if Harris isn't (supposedly) all the way there yet. Harris, by the way, is a total Draco Malfoy stand-in. The resemblance is uncanny in every way. I like the current antagonism between him & Charlotte. But my fave guy is Monty, the suave vampire; he's drawn a short stick and has a lot of issues to overcome now, but the group supports each other.In short, I enjoyed this and can't wait for book #2!

I purchased this book for my son but I wasn't sure he would read it. I asked him what he thought and he thought the information was truly helpful. I am so thankful for a book like this from a young man's perspective.

It was short...but didn't have much helpful information at all.

This is one of the only books I've read that focuses on the father. Most teen pregnancy books are written from the mothers perspective, and I really appreciate the shift. With great quotes throughout the book this book gives some great insight into the thoughts and feelings of many young men who find out their girlfriend is pregnant. While most of the book does focus on parenting there are also chapters on the other alternatives, abortion and adoption. This book also includes chapters on dealing with stress, domestic violence, relationships, and childbirth. There is also a resource guide in the back.Finding out that your girlfriend is pregnant can bring up so many emotions and this book validates so many different responses to different scenarios. Whether you plan to parent, place the child for adoption or your girlfriend has an abortion there is no right or wrong way to feel and this book has interviews with many different fathers in different situations. This book is very much about really looking at what is best for you and taking care of yourself. It also stresses that staying together may not be the best option and if you do try to stay together what obstacles you may face and not to use the pregnancy as the reason to stay. There are many co-parenting relationships out there that are healthier because they decided not to stay together than if they had tried to stay together.While this book is geared toward teens I believe any young adult up through their 20's could benefit from reading it. When that pregnancy test turns out positive there are all kinds of emotions that happen and this book helps break them down so you can start to put them into perspective.
