In her book The Little School: Tales of Disappearance and Survival in Argentina Alicia Partnoy describes her imprisonment in the 1970's in Argentina. She was a political activist who did not like the way her government treated people of Argentina. Partnoy was determined to stand up against the government despite the risk of being arrested. Once captured and brought to the Little School of imprisonment by the military, Partnoy describes the daily torture inflicted on the activists. The captors blindfolded and tortured prisoners on daily basis. Prisoners were molested and nearly starved. The conditions she describes under which they lived were horrible and difficult to tolerate. Despite the oppression, Partnoy showed that she is a survivor by standing up to her captors and always trying to make the life of her fellow prisoners better. She cared very deeply about her cause and even more about others who were mistreated. As her friends were taken away and killed, Partnoy remained determined to keep their memory alive by wring this book and including a written case about others who vanished to ensure they are remembered. Her story is very personal and she allows a reader into her most difficult moments for which I am very grateful. This book was a required reading for a woman's studies class and I am grateful that I had an opportunity to read it.

Another crushing account -- very understated -- about the "disappeared" in Argentina. So many were barely out of childhood when they were swept up in the Dirty War. The political context is missing here, but not the humanity of the prisoners or the bankruptcy of dictatorship

THE LITTLE SCHOOL is a beautiful brilliant book in heartbreaking and heartening ways. The vicious brutality and sadism of the military regime and the guards is not detailed---mostly elided (she leaves that to the newspapers)---in a generous, clear focus on her fellow prisoners and their inner dignity. A book of striking humanity at its extremes.I think she's a great writer overlooked in the hype of American literary bizness because her story of epic, unceasing bravery in the face of terror and death doesn't correspond to stereotypes of macho and military heroism conveyed by industrial culture to the youth. Instead, her various books speak of a woman's unbreakable integrity. Partnoy's unassuming storytelling delivers a perspective on this too-common modern atrocity that is new and rare, and whose astonishing generosity of spirit is fitting tribute to her peers who did not survive.

This was definitely an interesting and easy to read story. The Little School is Alicia Partnoy's account of what she experienced, through a blindfold, when she was forced into one of the many government concentration camps in Argentina during the Dirty War. She writes about her personal experience, thoughts and the stories of some of her fellow political dissidents. Overall it was a good read and shed to light an event I knew little to nothing about. It wasn't too intense so the average reader should be able to get through it without nightmares. It is clear that she undoubtedly left out the gory details. The book went into little detail about anybody's dark feelings, torture sessions and practically nothing about the sexual assault they must have endured. Maybe this was to save the reader, maybe she felt like it would have given the torturers some sick glorification, or maybe she just wanted us to get to know the prisoners as people not just torture victims. In any case, it was definitely a personal yet light hearted way to gain some understanding of an important event in history that can always repeat itself.

The idea that there are people still missing, having "disappeared" in Argentina, is a horrifying thought. Alicia Partnoy writes of her kidnapping in Argentina and her ordeal at a prisoner camp. Her time in prison detailed in this story makes you see her as such a hero not only to those she tried to help during her stay, but for herself as well. She was able to keep herself strong so that she could survive the ordeal as well as help everyone around her. She made sure on a daily basis to do things that reminded her that she was alive and functioning and she could survive. She truly is an amazing woman to have gone through this ordeal and her story is certainly worth reading.

Excellent text which examines how occupational therapy practitioners think. It defines and describes the various types of reasoning practitioners utilize, along with contextually relevant applications to a variety of practice areas in occupational therapy. Additionally, it includes applications to teaching in higher education, fieldwork education, and occupational therapy management. It makes a strong case for further research and scholarship regarding professional reasoning in occupational therapy.

As with MOHO, PEO or any of the other pseudoscientific theories that abound in OT, my professors expect me to regurgitate this nonsense every time I write a paper. I was expected to do clinical case reviews, identifying the different types of reasonings employed by the clinician. I and my fellow students were always stumped because we ended up being able to identify three or four types of reasoning to each case, thus making for very weak construct validity. But in terms of validity, the typology here is in good company with the rest of OT theory, which suffers from the same lack of intellectual rigor, practical necessity, or clinical justification. We have been told time and again, that these vacuous exercises in sophistry make us sound like "more serious professionals" to the denizens of other disciplines, but I think the effect is quite the opposite. The overriding message is that OT's are so insecure as professionals, that we cannot feel comfortable borrowing and applying knowledge from other disciplines that would be far more relevant. No, we must reinvent the wheel again and again. So long as an OT invented the theory at hand, and frequently uses the term "occupation" ad nauseum, we may be sure that no one will muscle in on our academic turf. The problem is that anyone with a brain knows that that fuzzy-headed logic will not fly outside of the self-congratulatory bubble of the backslapping, inbred, OT world. Now, what kind of reasoning did I just use to make my argument? Oh, Logical Reasoning and Critical Thinking. Alas, these were not covered in my program or in any OT theory I have had the pleasure to study.

I have been looking through this recently published textbook and I'm blown away! It is such a wonderful text..a distinctly scholarly piece yet many practical, useful examples and ideas for practice applications. In particular, the section on Community of Practice is an eloquent discussion of the process of creating of reflective, inventive practitioners. It served as a great reference for a research proposal our team recently submitted for creating effective teacher training for Head Start Programs. This an interesting book, suitable for students and researchers with a broad range of media interests - whether it be in relation to fine arts, mass communication, or any other area of the field. First, I'll give an indication of what this book is not. It's probably not effective to use this book as an encylopedia, or as an introduction to media studies. For that, I suggest trying New Media: A Critical Introduction (but maybe wait to see if a paperback version of the 2nd edition is released) or Media and Cultural Studies: Keyworks (KeyWorks in Cultural Studies) or The New Media Reader if you want a good selection of key works that have influenced the often overlapping fields of media and cultural studies (see moreso the 2nd half of that book for stuff on media). I think people who would most benefit from the book under review are people who have some familiarity with the sorts of ideas that are discussed in these three books. A careful reader with any experience reading from the Humanities should be alright, though.What this book does offer the reader is a careful interrogation of concepts that are crucial to the contemporary vocabulary of media studies. I will not evaluate the individual pieces as I think it's a bit too arduous if I try to do it well, and unfair to the authors if I do a shoddy job. To answer this question a reader should turn to this short (a little over 200 pages book) to make an informed personal decision. In the work we learn of the life of Lafayette Ron Hubbard (1911-1987) the Nebraskan with the flaming red hair and a controversial career who wrote Dianetics in the 1950s which inspired his establishment of Scientology in the Cold War America of the 1950s. Scientology contains Buddhism and other Easter Religious thought, time travel and space odyssey elements along with science fiction to form a potent new religious phenomenon. Hubbard and his followers were distinctly anti-Communist and enjoyed espionage and secrecy. The Church broke into the IRS offices many times seeking material on their movement. Thousands of court cases culminated in the US Government giving Scientology tax exempt approval as a legitimate Church in 1993.Hubbard died a Howard Hughes lookalike in the California desert where he had fled from Federal Prosecution for a variety of crimes against the government. Scientology demands that its gnostic secrets be paid for with lots of money and includes high profile celebrities most notably Tom Cruise among its celebrity adherents. The war against the Scientologist movement is in full force on the internet led by a group known as Anonymous. The book will open your eyes and you will learn about the e-meter! A good sober account of a religious./corporate movement more Americans need to be familiar with. There are about 25,000 professed Scientologist in our nation and the number of followers of Hubbard has declined.

An excellent introduction to Scientology. Urban does not judge the movement, but rather uses it to ask the question "what is religion?". Since that question has never been adequately answered, using a new religious movement as a test case is an effective method. The reader will learn much about the history and background of Scientology, but the conclusions s/he draws are left to the reader.

"The Church of Scientology: a History of a New Religion" was well-written and researched. As I read it, I had an awareness that the author was afraid of this litigious religion, so not saying what he really wanted to say. In my opinion, Scientology has a lot of weird beliefs (like many religions), but it's their paranoia and secrecy that makes the rest of us not respect them. Thank you Hugh Urban for writing this attempt at full-disclosure.

What I enjoyed most about this book is that it is not just a book on Scientology, but on religion and it's role in the modern world. I am sure there are many on either side of the Scientology fence, the same fence that I have been straddling for some time now, who either don't want to read about "those crazy Scientologists" or don't want to read another attack on the church. I can assure both of these prospective readers that this work is neither. You may get a feeling one way or another (and back and forth) as you progress through the book, but that is what makes the case of Scientology so damn interesting.The book is primarily about the definition of religion. By "definition of religion" Urban goes beyond the question of "What is Religion?" and into the causes and effects of that definition: who makes it and what are the consequences. Scientology has raised many important questions about the roles of religious freedom and privacy that are discussed in detail throughout this book, along with many others that have left me sitting here, grappling with my own thoughts and feelings on religion, thoughts and feelings that I thought were cemented through my previous studies and experiences.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the history of Scientology, but more so to those intrigued by the intersection of religion, politics, and privacy. I look forward to follow up works by this author as well as others, grappling some of the increasingly important questions raised in these pages.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have read several very good books on Scientology that employed a more "journalistic" approach (which tends to be a bit more biased), but this was a refreshingly straightforward, academic handling of the subject matter. The material really speaks for itself; at this point, the "Church" of Scientology practically seems to be begging for bias.

If you think that Tom Cruise is crazy and you want to know more about the mysterious Church of Scientology this book is for you. This was a required text for a class of mine but it was one of the best academic texts that I have read due to the authors arrangement of many of the controversial topics which surround the it.
