I finally got around to reading this book that I initially bought a paper copy at the ihopkc bookstore in 2012 at the first Passion for Jesus conference I attended there shortly after my introduction to their ministry. I was a little off put by the name as I thought, not being familiar with how they handle the prophetic, that it might be some "how to" book. It's not at all. I think every pastor should read this book first and foremost although I think that everyone in the church would benefit. My respect for Mike Bickle as a leader has just grown tremendously from seeing the wisdom, humility, and transparency he shows in comprehensively discussing all aspects of the prophetic from the individual to corporate perspective. I've been in Pentecost my whole life (57yr old preachers kid) and this book has leapfrogged my understanding of what the prophetic is (from small to large), the rewards and pitfalls, and the challenges of administering the gifting both personally and for church leadership.A must read ( also well written and easily understood).

Still in the process of reading but so far Mike Bickle gives straight answers. About five years ago I became aware of the prophetic life within me as the way God speaks to us in dreams and visions. The hard part was I had no one to help me to understand what to do with it all. I felt like a fool trying to find people in church to talk to about it, but the truth is, they didn't know any more than I did and some were afraid to even go there with me. Because of Mike Bickle's trial and error and relentless pursiut of God he has sound wisdom to share for people who just need to know and understand life in the Spirit. I believe this is a must read for ALL PASTORS so they know what to do when questions arrise in thier congregation.ALL GOD CHILDREN WILL be blessed by this book.

This book has good but limited insight for the general body of Christ. Its target audience is pastors and other church leadership, giving it a heavy slant that may not interest the rest of us.

I've been conditioned to think that any book on prophetic giftings would be sensational, focused on a prosperity-gospel, or simply useless. This book was first of all practical--it showed what New Testament prophecy is and isn't. It also showed exactly how prophecy should be used in the church, why it's valuable, and who should use it. The author presents numerous real-life examples of his successes--and failures!--in allowing prophecy at his church, so we can benefit from his mistakes and trials. Secondly, this book is reasonable. There's no hype, no false promises, no guarantees that "prophecy will make you wealthy and show you your future like a crystal ball!" The reader is given reasonable expectations for what fruit prophecy will produce in his or her life. Finally, the book is profoundly Biblical. Grammatical and spelling errors aside, there's nothing in the book that wasn't backed up by scripture. I recommend it for the most staunch dispensationalist in your congregation. ;)Update, May 2013: I want to point out that I've heard some disturbing things about Bickle's ministry, and several of the prophetic ministers in the book, that I wasn't aware of when I wrote this review. You truly can tell a tree by its fruit, and I don't want to come across as endorsing what's *currently* going on in the lives or ministries of any of these people. The book helped at a critical point in my own walk, and I stand by my opinions of it. However, an endorsement of this book is not an endorsement of the author, IHOP, or anyone else.

This is a wonderful book that's filled with practical advice for those who want to know more about properly governing the prophetic. It's critical that we have a balance that facilitates the prophetic without allowing it to become counterproductive. This book does a great job of helping us get there.

I rated this book very high because it is one of the best self help books that is written and available on the market for this century. This book has helped not only me, but it has been a tremendous help to the members of my church. I would recommend this book to everyone that wants to increase and improve their spiritual health.

Very sound, biblical counsel about how to "administer" prophetic ministry in a local church setting. His years of experience add credibility to his advice, and the stories are helpful. At the same time, he is still very positive about the benefits of prophetic ministry. I highly recommend this book, especially to pastors, but also to anyone with an interest in the gift of prophecy.

This is a good book for pastors who are seeing the gift of prophecy emerging in their church

I love this book. When I first read it, I'd heard of the Ba'al Shem Tov but knew very little about him and less about his followers. This book wasn't just "about" them, it gave me a sense of who they were and why the are so much beloved by so many. Souls on Fire feels like listening to your uncle who visits rarely and tells the most interesting stories. If you have any interest at all in Elie Wiesel, Jewish history, or religious inspiration, do yourself a favor and read this book. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Just re-read this over Shabbat - This book is a compilation of lectures by Prof. Elie Wiesel on the beginnings of modern Chassidism in Central and Eastern Europe starting in the mid 1700's.Prof. Wiesel starts with the legendary founder, Rebbe Israel Baal Shem Tov, whose whole existence is cloaked in mystery - and progresses through his students to the 2nd and 3rd generations of rebbes and chassids, including such luminaries as Rebbe Nachman of Breslev and Rebbe Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev.The author really brings these figures alive with his unique mix of story-telling and teaching - it's a great introduction to the world of early chassidut in 18th-19th century Eastern Europe.

I had not heard of this book until a friend loaned me his copy. After reading it I knew I needed my own copy which I received through my Kindle. This is really a rather sacred book. Wiesel uses Rabbinical stories to teach and he does so very effectively. The book consists of four stories that teach wisdom for life. This book amazes me, I cannot recommend it too highly. There are only a few books that I feel most of us will treasure. For me, SOUL ON FIRE is definitely one of those for me. The book is available both in paperback and for the Kindle.

Souls on Fire: Portraits and Legends of Hasidic Masters, by Elie Wiesel, starts off with promise enough, but the book lacks the passion and life blood necessary to deal with the topic. The men Wiesel portrays are the early heroes of Hasidism, but Wiesel’s presentation and style resembles very flat newspaper reporting. This book just falls flat. With the material Wiesel had about these extraordinary figures, the results should have been superior.

What a great introduction to the stories of the Hasidic fathers! While Elie Wiesel is best known for his very important book "Night", This book shows how broad his writing skills are as it is a both deep and fun to read. If I had to give it an additional name, I would call it "Light".

Fascinating sketches of Hasidic legends. Thought provoking and stirring at the same time. Some passage are beyond bearing and yet retain exquisite and heart-wrenching beauty.

Elie Wiesel knows how to write and even though the culture is a bit hard to understand, the message about the importance of communtiy shines through all the way.

This book changed my life. Honestly. After many years of suffering and therapy, I finally realized (by reading this book) that I might have ADHD. I was not your typical ADHD case - I am not hyperactive, and I managed to be a good student with a LOT of work. But when I read this book a lot of things began to make sense... After some months, I finally decided to seek professional help and now I'm in a much better place in my life - I have energy and motivation throughout the day; I can actually focus on my work for an hour straight (before, sometimes even 10 minutes seemed impossible!); my mind is much more in the present and thus calmer and less prone to depression. Sometimes I think that learning about ADHD was a miracle in my life. My therapist is so impressed that I'm now only having very sparse 'maintenance appointments'. So thank you, Sari Solden!

I've read almost every book out there on ADD to gain a better understanding of what not only I exist with but how to better cope. This book was by far the best! It should me a mandatory read for all women with ADD. The best part is that it's organized in a way that you can easily skim, pick and choose what you're interested in reading when without having to go in a logical chronological chapter order. Sari Solden hit this one out of the park and has been a god send in helping me both understand and accept that there's absolutely nothing wrong with ADD, it's just a different brain than the majority of the public. I've learned to use my ADD to my advantage despite still struggling in other areas (everyone has struggles, so what, mine are JUST different) and in gaining a better appreciation for that, I wouldn't trade my ADD brain in for a nonADD brain ever.

This book and all the crying I did reading it were instrumental in my healing from the damage of a late diagnosis.Straightforward, informative, and understanding, without wrapping female ADHD up in the flowery and quirky language we tend to see. You've got a problem, Sari Solden understands it intimately, and she's going to explain to you what's going on and help give you some of the tools to cope. From the relevant point-of-view of an adult woman, free from the misconceptions and stereotypes that virtually always accompany ADHD. This book is time well spent.

This book spoke directly to my soul. I found out I had ADHD at 28 years old, and my psychiatrist recommended this book among some others. Sari Solden is the only way to go, in my opinion, if you are a woman with ADD/ADHD. The other books I read were also helpful to an extent, but Solden really speaks to the way ADD can manifest itself differently in women than in men. Every single word I heard was like she was reading my own mind and heart down to every last detail. It was spooky. Made me cry at certain parts, and made feel relieved I'm not alone at others. I felt like I understood myself and the issues I've faced my whole life 1000% better after reading this.

Warning, this book will make your think deeply about processes and situations in your adult ADD life that may have baffled you, like they did me. I experienced a real grief process but also many AHA moments. Challenging to trace the ADD issues into all their manifestations. Enlightening and it offers hope and solutions (No quick fixes, no gimmicks) This is a book to cover not just household and project help, but insight into relationships and challenges as well. Money very well spent.

This is a useful, comprehensive book about what it is for an adult woman to live with attention deficit disorder, Much more than just a list of helpful hints for dealing with the disorder, the book offers a compassionate look at how it affects a woman's life. It touches on just about every aspect of life including jobs, education and relationships. It also has a broad appendix of resources. For anyone with attention deficit disorder or anyone who loves someone with the disorder, it is a complete education into what it is and how to deal with it.

I had known for a long time that I have ADHD, but never received proper treatment. Even after all the research I had done on my own, this book helped me to understand parts of me I could never figure out. This book also provides effective, non medicinal strategies and techniques for managing my ADHD. Also, I should mention that because of my ADHD I am not a reader. I bought the audio book and would listen to it in my car on my way to work. I had to re-listen to it a few times because of my tendency to "zone out", but I absolutely recommend the audio book over reading the book to anyone who struggles with reading like I do.

I read Phantastes because of the very high recommendation of C. S. Lewis. I'm surprised by the negative reviews, but if MacDonald's other books are really better than this one then I'm excited to read them, because I really liked Phantastes.At first it was hard to get into because for a while the story seems to wander aimlessly. MacDonald describes Fairy Land beautifully, but I just didn't see any plot to connect the seemingly random events. Also, it was sometimes a chore to get through the long sections of poetry (as I'm not a big fan of poetry).BUT at about halfway through the book, a story started to take shape, or rather, the "story" was hinted at all along, and the central struggles finally came to the surface, like love vs. possessiveness, and sacrifice. It's really a connect-the-dots kind of book, but not in the sense of a detective story: in a deeper sense of seeing the picture that MacDonald paints of the human heart, a picture that at first looks like random splotches, but then, as if we were watching the picture being painted, becomes more and more recognizable as the separate shapes are connected and finally find their meaning as a whole. MacDonald has painted not only a fairy story, but he has painted us, our own heart, in all its joy and pain.Once I saw this, it really changed my attitude toward the book. I read the second half in one sitting! I'll definitely read it again sometime because I'm sure I missed a lot of the layers and hidden meanings.My advice: If you're bored in the first half, just keep reading! It gets better.

I was amazed at how quickly and powerfully I was drawn into this fantasy of wandering in an enchanted forest landscape. The plot is basically that the main character, a young man, is compelled by circumstance to make his way through the "faerie wood". There are dangers and annoyances, he would like to turn around and go back, but the only way out is onward through the woods. This main plot ties together a series of events and offshoot stories, all wonderfully weird and sometimes dark. This was written in the late 19th century, so the vocabulary and sentence structure reflects that. Sometimes it takes a bit more effort to really slow down, understand and visualize what the author is saying but it is worth the trouble. I am not a fan of the poetry he starts the chapters with but this did not really diminish my delight at having discovered the book. There are some sublime moments. This story and author was an important formative inspiration for C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Published in 1858, Phantastes is a coming of age story, that tells of Anodos' journey through Fairy Land. MacDonald's prose is beautiful and lush and his poetry, while a product of it's time, is often enchanting. The story itself is engaging and at times enthralling. It is a delightful read for those who enjoy both allegory and Victorian literature.I have read this before, and was excited to find an annotated version. The editors John Pennington and Roderick McGillis define some of the more obscure words, interpret foreign phrases, place the novel in it's historical and literary place, point out influences, and give insights to the allegory. They also include a detailed introduction and appendices including illustrations, influences, contemporary reviews, and scholarly articles, in addition to a lengthy bibliography. This adds greatly to the enjoyment of the novel, and I'm delighted to have read it.

Do not expect to like this book if you have never felt the immortal longings of Fairyland stir in your soul. But for those who have heard the faint notes of fairy music whispering to you on some golden Midsummer twilight, they might find some enjoyment in this strange tale of a man's wandering through the fairylands.This is not a plot-driven book. The story is simple enough. A man wanders into the mystical other world and encounters strange goings on. The plot springs from this like a dream, shifting unexpectedly and often, flowing like a river shifting and twisting in its banks. An act as simple as opening a door might bring a sudden shift in the narrative, a jump in time and place. If this lack of structure sounds unappealing, then this book is probably not for you. The story recounts the journey of Anodos through the spiritual realms of Faerie, and his triumphs and failures therein. As a reader who enjoys such fantastical journeys, I found this book to be a pleasant read.The ending of the book was not as satisfying as I had hoped it would be, especially after the long winding road to reach it. Also, the book includes a lot of poems, verse and songs, which I find bogs down the flow of the narrative. The songs in particular, which can be quite lengthy at times, I did not like. Because they lack music, the lyrics are somewhat dead on the page. Some of these songs seemed to go on and on for pages. Tolkien showed this same irritating trait later in his works, so if you find the songs in the Lord of the Rings unappealing, then you probably won't like these.C.S. Lewis claimed that Phantastes was the bok that baptized his imagination, and it is easy to see why. This is certainly a powerful book, and for anyone interested in the breadth of Fantasy literature (beyond Tolkien and Tolkien-deriatives), I would recommend reading this. Don't expect to find high adrenaline excitement on every page. But do expect to encounter a haunting vision of Faerie that will stick with you for a while.

I would not have been able to read this book at another time in my life. It is a wandering fairytale with intense emotions of many themes. It doesn't really have strong central plot as much just being a poetic journey on a young man through fairyland. I can't imagine any child could really grasp this book. I think perhaps those who have experienced intense sorrows would benefit the most on these images.

I'm not really buying your argument, Mr. Kennedy. I think you want to believe your cousin is innocent. I think you believe your cousin is innocent. And, unfortunately, I think your cousin has taken advantage of your love and loyalty. He may be a changed man. We all make mistakes when we are younger, we all grow up, and we all (hopefully) look back and own up to those mistakes. I don't believe the latter for your cousin. I think it's possible he did black out and has been able to rationalize his lack of memory as proof he did not commit this terrible crime. You go through the beginning of the book painting each person in Martha's life and pretty much every resident of Belle Haven as a potential killer. You expose their secrets and paint them out to be deviants all while protecting Michael. You even have the audacity to diminish the character of the victim's family all while validating the behavior of the Skakel's. I'd like to believe your cousin is innocent, but for this to be true it would seem that there would be a huge conspiracy and massive witch hunt against him. I don't think people care that much. I don't think Michael is that much of a scape-goat. I think he's played the role well and has it down to a fine art. I'm not sure what your goal was to tear down every single witness/friend/family member only to then name two random individuals at the very end. I think you want so much to believe in your cousin's innocence that you'll believe anything. I don't say this lightly. No one would want to believe their very only relative could commit such a crime. But one thing you point out throughout the book is that you didn't know him them. You keep saying the Michael you know could not have done such a thing. But, you didn't know him then. I admire your family very much and do not mean this has disrespect. Your cousin is guilty.

Mickey Sherman is a disgrace to the legal profession, and to not be remiss, I must add that so are the prosecutors and the judges.I’m so upset about the outcome of this whole miserable miscarriage of justice, and cannot understand how this could happen on such a grand and gross scale.Michael Skakel should be forever free as a bird, with his poorly spent finances restored and his life filled with love. How he has managed to endure a life so damaged by greedy and self-serving “professionals” is a question we should all ask ourselves, because it could happen to anyone, and that is terrifying.(This book is well-written and comprehensive, with so many players, the author has provided a list of them for reference.)I will be haunted by this story until justice is served.

If this book is intended as a defense of Mr. Skakel, it should be shortened and better organized--the defense was buried in a lot of vitriol and interesting, but irrelevant information. Maybe start with the alibi, then move right into the other suspects for the SODDI defense, instead of burying this information in the last few chapters.If any of the information in this book is true, then Mr. Skakel should be granted a new trial. If the real killers are still out there, they need to be prosecuted as they would have added a new victim to their debit sheet. Note I say "if". This book comes from an extremely biased viewpoint.I understand that being related to the Kennedys, who hare viewed as having 'got away with' their fair share of crimes, would be a considerable handicap as a defendant. And certainly, Mr. Skakel, who is not a blood relative of the Kennedy family, has been branded as the Kennedy Cousin, to his detriment. However, it's hard to claim family disinterest when you write a book. The viewpoint of the author would be better served by a more neutral voice.As an attorney, the author could have also illustrated his points with quotes from court transcripts and police reports instead of descriptions of testimony and paraphrasing. If he is correct, then a terrible injustice has been done. I assume the release of this book on sale is not serendipitous but reflects the request for reconsideration launched last month.

Would love a foldout timeline to accompany this! Great directness and delivery, leaves one absolutely astounded at the ineptness of those investigating and prosecuting this case. This type of injustice is intolerable. Where are the checks and balance? Great read, but we need a great result for Michael!

this is a very good book. I never had any doubts that Michael Skakel was guilty, because that's what everybody said, it was on the news every night and it was a slam dunk. Robert Kennedy convinced me that was false after just a few pages. I could tell you, but it's a good read, and if you care about justice, and our legal system, and how someone could get falsely convicted with a iron clad alibi and little or no evidence, you'll want to read it yourself.

Great book, and I especially loved reading it on Kindle, as Kennedy's vocabulary is awesome and I needed to refer to the dictionary from time to time! I had always thought that Michael Skakel was guilty, just from peripheral awareness of the case from the media. The book makes you realize how little the average person actually knows about a case like this. It is also quite an indictment of several of those responsible for Michael's wrongful conviction. Excellent book. I have told several people to read it!

This worthless book is vicious and despicable, like Bobby Kennedy himself.

I found this book very intriguing as many of the characters are known but not their stories and how it shaped history. This was an eye opener for me and now I do feel I have many ancestors in Africa of many cultures races etc making me what I am today. Thanks for the inspired reading adventure you took me on.

Every South African needs to read these books. Amazing stories brilliantly told.

Well written interesting stories. A much needed anthology.

I enjoy Max’s books. They are short stories, easy to read and very informative.

Grace Lin does an incredible job of enchanting readers with stories that also teach about Chinese legend and customs.At least in the books I’ve read (this series and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon), Lin tells the main story with short stories/legends interspersed. They are very short, so the reader doesn’t lose track of the main plot.I’ve read both serieses aloud with fourth graders, and they’ve loved them. I love to start a series in small group rotations and then offer the rest of the series for the kids to read. I’ve had kids finish the rest of the series on their own.

We're huge fans of Grace Lin's work in this European-American family. "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" and "Starry River of the Sky" we loved so much that I read them before bedtime TWICE each. The words flow beautifully, the stories are wonderful... and this book is almost as good--which means it's fantastic.

This was a fun read for my third grader, who loved learning about Pacy's culture. The story was well written and engaging, and very relatable for my child. I highly recommend this book.

As a Taiwanese American reading this book. I loved it. There were so many ways that I could relate to Pacy growing up in suburban America. "You couldn't be Dorothy. You're Chinese. Dorothy's not Chinese." The chapters were short and easy to read for my 6 y.o.

Bought this for my Asian daughter who lives in Canada and refuses to recognize her Chinese roots. She loved the book and actually related to the girl in the story, and started asking about some of the traditions she read about and seeing some we practice. This is a good peek into the culture.

My daughter (9) and I very much enjoyed reading this novel together.

My daughter is almost 9. She enjoyed this book. Pacy, the main character, is on a quest to find herself: Is she Chinese-American? Taiwanese-American? Or just American? To her American friends at school her Chinese culture is distinctly different, so much so, that one little girl insensitively tells her she can't play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz because Dorothy is not Chinese.To Chinese girls, she is not authentically Chinese because she doesn't speak the language; they leave her out, telling her she is "Americanized" or as one girl rudely calls her: "A Twinkie, yellow on the outside, white on the inside."But the book is more than just the dilemma I mention here. It's a great read, and the book ends on a high note.
