About the Author

John von Neumann (1903-1957) was one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century and a pioneering figure in computer science. A native of Hungary who held professorships in Germany, he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in 1933. Later he worked on the Manhattan Project, helped develop the IAS computer, and was a consultant to IBM. An important influence on many fields of mathematics, he is the author of Continuous Geometry, Functional Operators (two volumes), and Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics (all Princeton). Oskar Morgenstern (1902-1977) taught at the University of Vienna and directed the Austrian Institute of Business Cycle Research before settling in the United States in 1938. There he joined the faculty of Princeton University, eventually becoming a professor and from 1948 directing its econometric research program. He advised the United States government on a wide variety of subjects. Though most famous for the book he co-authored with von Neumann, Morgenstern was also widely known for his skepticism about economic measurement, as reflected in one of his many other books, On the Accuracy of Economic Observations (Princeton).

The first good thing: it is a joy to read, like sipping hot chocolate, warm and sweet and goes down easy. In this tumultuous time we're living in, that goes a LONG way; it is pure comfort reading. The writing is funny and effortless. I never wanted to stop reading, and I felt satisfied when it was done.The second good thing is how much I enjoyed reading a book with two professionally accomplished leads. They both have challenging careers, and they both care about their work and are good at it. We see both of them in professional settings, thinking about their work, stressing about things that matter. Alexa is trying to fund an arts program for at-risk teenagers, and Drew has a kid who's not recovering well after surgery. They also both have broad social circles filled with interesting, good people. I really enjoyed reading a book in which the characters are essentially all role models. Alexa in particular is a well drawn character, with relatable insecurities and a sharp, funny way of looking at the world. Drew is a bit more generic, but he's still a good guy.And this brings me to the criticism -- there isn't any real conflict. Drew is commitment phobic, and tends to dump women after a few months; and Alexa is worried about getting attached to him. But this doesn't ever go anywhere. I always find it irritating when the big conflict of the book could be resolved if either character would just talk to the other one. What's a little stranger is that there is potential for real conflict here. Alexa is black and Drew is white, and beyond that, Ms. Mallory does talk about the white privilege that Drew enjoys, and there is one instance where he makes a somewhat uninformed remark about her youth program. I'm curious why she didn't build more conflict around that -- not around racial issues, particularly; I liked that they were inter-racial. But why not build conflict that is more original and specific to who these people are, and the work they do? At one point Ms. Mallory mentions in passing that they have to learn how to adapt to two difficult and challenging careers; that is also an interesting conflict, rarely explored, and these are two characters who could handle it.There's part of me that enjoyed a book in which nothing bad happens, but it also was a little odd that this is a book in which nothing much happens: two attractive, likable, accomplished people meet, fall in love, and.... the end, basically!All that being said -- it was warm, and sweet, and comforting, and funny, and I'm on board for all of that. A good read that deserves to be read.(And P.S. just to back up what Roxane Gay said in her 5-star review: it is very funny how much they ate. I guess since they weren't fighting, and they couldn't have sex ALL the time, they needed something else to do, so they ate constantly -- donuts, waffles, burgers, burritos, more donuts, more donuts. It was kind of hysterical.)

I wanted to love it. The two leads have real jobs and each has a small circle of friends. But there was no oomph to the plot. I felt like the characters were just spinning their wheels until the inevitable happy ending. There wasn't even a good sense of place. San Francisco should be a good setting but this was the most generic version of SF.

Fun, frothy rom-com read that would make a delightful movie. (Admit I've been dream casting it in my head ever since I finished reading it. Think I mentally settled on Chris Pine and Nicole Beharie for the leads. Make it happen, Hollywood!)From the moment Alexa and Drew meet cute in a stuck elevator and she agrees to be his wedding date for the weekend, sparks fly between the poised political operative and hunky pediatrician. As their cross-California romance goes from faux to fabulous, the two see if there's more to their relationship than just a couple wild weekends.Devoured this on vacation and it's the perfect beach read. Smart, funny, a little bit sexy (but not graphic), and just a truly delightful summer, or anytime, read. And while it's undeniably light reading, it also has stuck with me long after most modern romances have totally faded from memory. Jasmine Guillory is a true find and I can't wait to read what she has coming out next. (It's THE PROPOSAL, another fun-as-heck sounding romance, which I've already pre-ordered.)

Saw this on a buzz feed article about fun summer reads and it being a great rom-com style book. It wasn't.The two characters were mildly interesting, but their "relationship development" was a span of 2 months of weekend sex trips. It only bothered me because in the "sample" and even the build up of the wedding, there was such promise of a cute story, but then you got past their first hookup and it was like the author didn't know what else to do besides have them bone down for 75% of the book.Also, the text fighting and juvenile fighting packed depth and believability to the romatic notion that these two characters would be together.

I purchased the book expecting this to be something like a Stephen Colbert book where the book focuses on the character with some facts trickled in. However, the book is pretty much the opposite. The book is large amounts of information, with very little "Saul" personality trickled in.

"Make the check out to Ice Station Zebra, strictly for tax purposes I assure you..."Saul doles out his folksy wisdom from down on the farm, or something to that effect, in this novel. It's filled with hilarious lines and "how to's" on how not to wind up in the slammer. Written from the perspective of Saul dictating to a ghostwriter, you get the image in your head that Saul is sitting down, legs up on a electric ankle massage machine sipping vodka and doling out all those little nuggets of wisdom.Enjoy this book for what it is and you'll enjoy it for a dive into more Saul and his sense of humor.If you're not a Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul fan then I'd say steer clear. Most of this won't really seem like it has a huge point.Good read none the less, just not as box checking for those not into the fandom.

This book is absolutely priceless, especially for all the fans of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad. It reads very easy, throws in great gab about how to do this and how to do that, and it makes the judicial system out to be a joke in this country, of which we all know it is. Real life pointers make it a smooth read and I am very satifisied with it!

I was given this “La Bella Vita: Daily Inspiration from Italy” as a gift. I fell in love with it and purchased 3 to give as gifts. I wanted to share these beautiful and informative devotionals with family members. If you have ever been to Italy then, like me, you love the country, its history and its people. Helen Ruchti has combined her experiences from living there as missionaries with her Biblical knowledge and created meaningful and inspirational devotionals. I have read through the book several times and still marvel at the information she pens on each page. Besides being a wonderful devotional, her book also teaches you so much about the Italian way of life, its art and artists and even about its amazing food. You don't have to read it just one day at a time. You can sit and read several pages as you would any book you love. I highly recommend “La Bella Vita”, the Beautiful Life!

In the late 1960's I actually had the pleasure of working in Italy with author Helen Ruchti and her late husband affectionately called "Dub." I was working as a young 2-year missionary assistant in Turin (Torino) while the Ruchtis were in the middle of their 25 year career in Rome. Fortunately we had enough connection that I got to know and so greatly appreciate the Ruchtis and the work they were doing in the "Eternal City." I was convinced then, and remain convinced now, that Helen and Dub knew as much or more about Rome, Italy, than any Roman mayor or Pope! They completely emersed themselves in "all things Rome" (and "all things Italian"). When I heard about this book I assumed it was going to be more of a Bible study kind of heavy devotional book. I was delighted to see that it is a book of faith and inspiration, but like an artist Helen paints small one-page paintings of the Italy that she so loves. The graphics and general layout of the book are simply lovely, conjuring up sensations from "Bella Italia." I will be delighted to give this beautiful work as gifts. Each page (day) there is a Scripture verse and one-sentence prayer at the end. But the meat of the daily thought is a beautiful word picture of one of the endless gems that make up the wonderful country of Italy.....gems remembered and described as only Helen Ruchti could do. I bought four (4) books to give as gifts. Having read it now I am ordering many more. I cannot imagine anyone describing the land she loves so much (and I love, too) in any more compelling way. Dear Helen did and exquisite job. While bringing me "Inspiration," I now have a tremendous urge to grab an airline ticket and once again revisit glorious Italy. For anyone who dreams of knowing Italy or anyone who dreams of returning I highly recommend this fine, new, inspirational book.

Besides being daily inspired, you can't help but learn about the Italy where author Helen Ruchti spent thirty years of her life ministering with her husband, learning the language, experiencing the culture, and loving its people. Catherine de Medicis was queen of France for more than a half century, from her wedding in 1533 to Henry de Valois, to her death in 1589.She was the wife of one king, Henry II, the mother of three others, François II, Charles IX and Henry III.It is a good book to read, as it provides an overview of a long period of history, full of events.But possibly, the author attempted too much, and tried to cover too long a period with insufficient depth.The book is placed in the grey zone between history, with a capital H, hard facts and old documents, and fiction which gives liberty to the author to phantasies about what might or might not have been. And sometime the reader is left in doubt : was Catherine actually the lover, if only for one night, to the Admiral de Coligny ? This is a key hypothesis in understanding later events, including the massacre of the St Barthelemy when Coligny died, possibly on the direct orders of the queen. I don’ t know, and I doubt it.And, sometime, the author crosses a dangerous line, when he describes events that did not take place : for instance, at the time of the death of his brother Charles IX, Henry, Duke of Anjou and the future Henry III, was definitely not in Savoy, but in Cracow, having been elected king by the polish nobility: this is a well-known fact ! Writing otherwise is misleading the reader !The author would be well advised to be more diligent in proofreading his text which includes obviously inaccurate places, times, dates and distances.

Catherine de Medici is one of those historical characters whose reputation is so tarnished that it's hard to imagine any redemption for her. At the same time, what exactly was her role as queen mother? C.W. Gortner chose an interesting title for this book, because we pick it up knowing that she is getting a chance to explain her side of the story. As such, we know it's going to be biased in her favor, and the author's challenge is to make her excuses believable while not going too far in the other direction. It was a very interesting task, and I think he pulled it off well.Thrust into an uncomfortable royal marriage where her friends were few and she was surrounded by derision, Catherine's first difficulty was establishing a presence in a court where mistresses held power (including her husband Henry II's famous Diane of Poitiers) and political factions could mean life or death. But Catherine was a de Medici, and her family was skilled in this sort of environment. She did manage to build a powerful faction of her own and even gained the approbation (love?) of her husband, giving him ten children. However, she accused his mistress of taking the children away from her, so their dubious personalities were not of her making. By the time she took control of her childrens' lives, the damage had already been done. They were a weak and unruly bunch, and always seemed to be causing profound difficulties.Henry's untimely death left a sickly 15 year-old Francis II as heir, and she managed to become regent for him; but he died within a year. Ten year-old Charles followed and a third son Henry was crowned 14 years after him. It seems that Catherine essentially acted a regent all along, and her focus became the survival of the Valois line through many civil wars and religious upheaval. It must have been a terrible time.Catherine's methods were not always kind, and she is saddled with some pretty nasty accusations including orchestrating the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Gortner seems to disagree that she was responsible, though Catherine admits to having made some bad decisions that led to the disaster. It could be that in those tempestuous days, there were no good decisions. It's possible that without her hand at the helm, the dynasty would have fallen to the treacherous de Guise faction. Some of Catherine's defenses seemed weak, and it is possible that she sometimes took the blame on her shoulders that more rightly belonged elsewhere. Or was she merely clouding the issues? The problems seemed always to be caused by someone else and she had to find the solutions. Then again, that could well be how we always see ourselves. The book flowed well and was an interesting read.

I enjoyed this novel from the viewpoint of Catherine de Medici. It wasn't the most gripping or fast-paced novel that I've read, nor did I have too much of an emotional attachment to the characters, but I did enjoy reading from Catherine's perspective. Previously every novel that I have read about this period has cast Catherine in a very negative light. For example, the historical fantasy series by Susan Carroll and also a particular favourite of mine by Diane Haegar, "Courtesan", about Diane de Poitiers.This novel goes far in changing the perception of certain events by giving them from Catherine's perspective. By using his fictional license C.W. Gortner has not painted his protagonist with a broad brush, rather he has shown her to be a complex woman who is not purely saint or sinner. One particular feature I liked was that he has made Catherine completely aware of her sordid reputation. Yet she does not fight against it, rather she strives forward in her effort to protect and strengthen her adopted homeland. Gortner has made it as if Catherine is speaking to us through the ages, as if she is aware of what her reputation will be to future generations as well as in her present day.However, this is not to say that this is a novel in which Catherine is constantly defending herself to the reader, rather she is showing things in a matter-of-fact way. It is almost like she is saying to the reader; "this is what happened, these were my limited choices, this is what I did". It was due to this that I found this to be an interesting read. I didn't connect to Catherine as a character, but I most definitely did respect her.

Having read several books on Catherine,I find it interesting to see how each author portray her. She is queen, a wife, a scorned woman, a victim, a mother, a lover and the most powerful woman in France. Her reasons for her actions will leave you surprised, saddened and shocked. Her children and France came before anything else. How she navigated the politics and morals of the 16th century are fascinating. The historical signposts are accurate, you recognize the events, but it is the behind the scenes drama that keeps you rivited and hoping for our heroine to find happiness.
