Very insightful and easy to understand. I have been reading the Bible my entire life, but discovered many things by reading this commentary.

Just started to read it. So far I have enjoyed three other commentaries in this series.

In this very well written book, Hawkins and Blakeslee describe a new model of how our human intelligence has evolved, how it "works" and what it means to have a “massive” cerebral cortex. Much of the description of the brain's neuronal structure will be familiar to those who follow developments in neuroscience. However, what's new here is a working model of how the brain uses extensive feedback loops to complete the complex task of information processing.The authors assert that, "The brain uses the same process to see as to hear. The cortex does something universal that can be applied to any type of sensory or motor system." And, "The idea that patterns from different senses are equivalent inside your brain is quite surprising, and although well understood, it still isn’t widely appreciated." Further, the way the brain processes information is consistently applied to all that sensory data. This common processing algorithm and sensory input processing helps our brains to adapt to an ever changing environment. That is why we can live and function in this modern world. A world in which change, and our need to adapt, has certainly outstripped evolutionary time scales.The hypothesis put forward in this book rings true to me based on my understanding of complex systems and from observing the actions of my fellow human beings. This model (new to me but not necessarily new to the neuroscience world) doesn't negate my understanding from other reading how the human brain is "wired." Rather, it explains more fully how the system "hangs together" and accomplishes the incredible feats we witness every day. It also lays the foundation for a better understanding of human consciousness.Once again the fact that we can understand our material world only in a "second hand" manner is driven home by this model. We work only with a representation of the world, and it is represented by a limited number of sensory inputs. From the standpoint of how we deal with our fellow human beings, this challenging and interesting book makes it clear that we should all be a lot lesscertain that what we "know to be true" is actually a true representation of reality.In the authors' words: "Finally, the idea that patterns are the fundamental currency of intelligence leads to some interesting philosophical questions. When I sit in a room with my friends, how do I know they are there or even if they are real? My brain receives a set of patterns that are consistent with patterns I have experienced in the past. These patterns correspond to people I know, their faces, their voices, how they usually behave, and all kinds of facts about them. I have learned to expect these patterns to occur together in predictable ways. But when you come down to it, it’s all just a model. All our knowledge of the world is a model based on patterns. Are we certain the world is real? It’s fun and odd to think about. Several science-fiction books and movies explore this theme. This is not to say that the people or objects aren’t really there. They are really there. But our certainty of the world’s existence is based on the consistency of patterns and how we interpret them. There is no such thing as direct perception. We don’t have a “people” sensor. Remember, the brain is in a dark quiet box with no knowledge of anything other than the time-flowing patterns on its input fibers. . . Your perception of the world is created from these patterns, nothing else. Existence may be objective, but the spatial-temporal patterns flowing into the axon bundles in our brains are all we have to go on."What does all this mean to our daily lives? To me it simply means that there are solid reasons to make sure we always question our assumptions, work to find as much objective empirical data as possible and allow for other people to have a different view of the patterns they discern. Our individual perspective is all we have, but it isn't necessarily the only one nor is it necessarily the most accurate representation.

This book was a great read, very accessible and might prove to be a very important book one day. It's a quick read that will without a doubt have a significant impact on how you view the future of artificial intelligence.As a testament to it's relevancy today (I'm writing this Sept 2012, seven years after the book was published) he predicts three technological applications that may become available in the short term (5-10 years) due to breakthroughs in the kind of trainable AI this book discusses:Computer vision and teaching a computer to tell the difference between a cat and a dog (this was successfully demonstrated in a study published in June 2012 - the paper is called "Building High-level Features Using Large Scale Unsupervised Learning" and is available online, or just search for "computer learns to recognize cats" for articles)PDAs (as they were called back then) will understand naturally spoken instructions like "Move my daughter's basketball game on Sunday to 10 in the morning" (this kind of sentence, copied from the book verbatim, is exactly where Apple's AI application SIRI shines)Smart/autonomous cars - in Aug 2012, Google announced that their self driving cars have logged 300 K accident free miles in live traffic on public roads, exceeding the average distance a human drives without accident.The thing to note here is that when he wrote the book these three things had hurdles that we did not know how to solve, and at the time there was no clear linear progression of existing solutions that would guarantee they would be solved. His prediction is that we'll be able to train computers to recognize patterns by themselves which will allow us to eventually solve the problems (and this is exactly how the computer learned to recognize cat faces from youtube videos)Furthermore, he predicts that AI will become one of the hottest fields within the next 10 years - and with the current explosion of interest in Big Data, Machine Learning, and applications like SIRI it is hard to deny that it lookslike we're right in the midst of seeing just this happen.The grander implications of the model of this book won't be known for another 10-20 years or more, but 7 years in his general predictions about the field of AI have been very accurate.

I have been immersed in Costa Rica (Guanacaste) for the last 8 weeks. One objective I have is to get better at speaking the Costa Rican dialect - a much different language than the Castilian stuff we learned in school. The language here has a lot of slang too, and pronunciations/linguistics can vary as well. I have had some success, and have been "complimented" that I now sound like a polite three-year old, with a good accent.In turn, my wife has asked me to teach the language to her. It is a lot more than just listing vocabulary words, and a challenge that can only come with time, and practice, practice, practice. Also, there are seven provinces in Costa Rica, and they each have subtle differences in their dialect, as expected. This is especially evident when you hear someone from San Jose speaking while on holiday elsewhere in the country.I found this book, and I thought it would be a great start for her until I return! It's OK for fundamentals (conjugation, syntax), but needs a current revision. Many of the phrases in the book she shared with me do not carry the same meanings as they once did when it was written. As with all languages, they evolve, and this book is overdue.

Lacks some of the second-tier verbs. I am doing this off the cuff, but let's say you wanted to put together the sentence, "Some scientists have a theory that insects prefer to walk around a little before they bite." You might have to go elsewhere for a word or two. Also, it isn't going to take you very far with complex tense constructions "had we known at the time what the road conditions here were going to be in this area, we would never have rented a sedan to drive to (wherever). Do you think the towtruck is going to be able to get the car back up out of the river? And will those monkeys steal my GPS?" Good book for "Esteemed sir, Me Cochise. We would like to order a pizza with no little fishes on it."

This handy little book is much better than most I've seen and was definitely worth the price. It was far better than the book my friend brought along with her on our trip. It was easy to find certain words and their meaning and Costa Rican phrases and expressions. It would be helpful to have this book a month or two before going to Costa Rica in order to learn some of the phrases and day-to-day words and expressions. Of course, even better would be to learn the Spanish language before you go. Costa Rica is a lovely country with friendly people. I can't wait to go again and I will be sure to take this handy little book along with me.

I found this phrasebook recommended on a travel guide website and headed immediately to Amazon to see if it was available. My wife and I are headed to Costa Rica, in less than a week, so I was happy to find it sold and available here. Upon receiving it, I realized that the translator was better than I expected. It is small, durable and organized perfectly into sections pertinent to each situation you may encounter while traveling. I was also impressed to see that the book was Spanish specific to the region of Costa Rica. Would highly recommend the Lonely Planet series if you're looking for a quality pocket translator.

I recently spent 2 weeks in rural Costa Rica without taking any Spanish classes (outside of a semester in 6th grade 20+ years ago). This book was very helpful - IF you know what you're looking for. The first chapter are about conjugation etc., which I think is unnecessary here in the "emergency" phrase book, as I called it. Flip through it ahead of time and dog-ear the parts where you will likely need to reference quickly, such as the menu items and common questions, etc. This little book came in very handy and I'm glad I had it for my trip! The small size was perfect for traveling/hiking.

Some of the phrases included, I hope I never need to use! Like, "I didn't do it!" "Can I speak to a lawyer?" "That package is not mine." The pickup lines are pretty funny too. Recommend!

This is a cool little phrase book. We found it very useful while travelling in CR. It is intuitively organized and is implemented in a way that allows for phrase building so it is quite flexible. The only downside is we found it also necessary to carry a more complete dictionary since the included dictionary lookup is limited. To be fair this is promoted as a phrasebook and that is what it does very well hence the 5 starts

Came in handy it’s small and easy to carry. I’d recommend carrying in ziplock bag since the damp weather and humidity really got to the pages. Looking back I would get some of those stick on tabs to book mark some areas of More frequent use. I was riding the bus so some of the terms eally came in handy. I highly recommend this book from the layout

If you spend everyday in the woods and need to be aware of the finer distinctions between hawthorns, then the bigger, glossier tree guides are for you. Personally, I find them almost overwhelming in their detail. The Golden Guides were pitch-perfect in the simplicity married to precision. I've used these books with numerous children to help inspire their passion for trees: they were so clear and artistically managed that four-year olds have gone on nature walks with me and managed to properly identify sassafras and different types of pine.The clarity of the Golden Guide Trees more than compensates for its smaller size. Highly recommended.

Bought this book to update the ones we have at our cabin which were published in the 1950s (according to the hand written birthday note in the inside cover with the year). Well.. I havent done an exact side by side comparison but as far as I can tell from reading them they have made no changes to the contents of the book.

I love Golden Guides. I got my first as a kid in the 60’s. I still have all of mine & am now buying them for my grandchildren. Not at all babyish, great illustrations, with informative written detail.

I am a hobbyisnt woodworker that wanted to know a bit more about trees. This book made me look at trees a lot different. Now, when i go on runs, i don't stop staring at trees and trying to guess what they are. When I'm walking around i can pull up this guide on my phone and semi-easily identify which tree I am looking at.However, the formatting could be a bit more consistent in this guide. For example, some trees don't have maps, some trees dont have illustrations. Also, the start of new types of trees are shown differently (oaks had a small description and then descriptions for each oak while maple had a large centered heading and then the descriptions of each maple)

This book is an excellent field guide, as is the rest of the Golden Guides. I carry this on me when I'm in the field at work for quick identification of species. While it is a smaller book and does not have an extensive amount of information on each species, it has just enough to know what you are looking at in the field so you can research at a later date, saving you from lugging a huge identification key around.

I found it a little disappointing when I realized it only showcased North American insects. However, considering the sheer amount of species of bugs that exist the world, there is just no reasonable way to fit so much info into a field guide as small as this. It does a good job of summarizing the main orders.

Best insect field guide for hikes. Small, hand sized. Easy to navigate with just enough insects to begin to identify what we saw. Not good for exact identification, but a great start.

This book does not provide individual item numbers or size information on parts. It provides ok illustration of the parts of the bike. I needed it for troubleshooting the turn signals. This book was able to help me find where the wiring hub is located but not much else. It is not very well organized. It will show you pictures of parts of the motorcycle broken down to there individual components but will not tell you the sizes/specifications or names of individual components. As a result it was useless in getting replacement parts when I needed to change the fluid and seals on the forks. It does not tell you what size of seals you need.

Book with loads of info!For the beginner as for the advanced mechanic, will find regularly the need to re-read this book, in order to soak in everything this book has to offer!As a beginner, home mechanic, or just hobbyist, this book starts out with the basics of the basics of mechanics and electricity.The further you go, the deeper it goes into stuff, more specific the bike, and less generalized.It's a keeper book,if you own a Honda, and want to learn to do some basic jobs yourself, instead of spending high $$$ dollars, for the outrageous bills (sometimes exceeding $90/hr).If you only succeeded replacing disc brake pads, air and/or fuel filter, and oil changes, you have already bought back the price of this book!It's a great way to become more knowledgeable about your vehicle!

I would firstly recommend the official Honda service manual, that is a must have. The Clymer manual gets into deeper details and provides lots of pictures and tips while you work through it. The extra advice it provides tends to answer all questions you may come up with and it is written for the DIYer / basic mechanic. So even if you have very basic knowledge, that will usually suffice for most repair and maintenance jobs you will encounter on your motorcycle. This + the factory manual and I am able to tackle every repair (so far) on my VT750.

I have used Clymer manuals for over 40 years, and they are excellent. But, they are not indexed well, and sometimes the only way to find what I need is to flip through the pages until I see it, which is not only time consuming, it's easy to overlook the topic that way. Clymer also shares a fault with all manuals, both manufacturer and aftermarket, in that some of the pictured details are not visible when actually doing the work; they are correct, but some parts must be removed to see the pictured detail on the machine. Given these, Clymer is probably the best.

Great manual for my 2003 Honda Shadow Spirit 750.I used it for many maintenance procedures, like valve clearances. The pictures are generally great. Some are hard to see because of the grayscale, but otherwise great. The wiring diagrams are very, very helpful as well.

While there is a lot of technical content in this book, by far the most important information in my opinion is about organizational issues: at all costs one must resist the temptation to start coding too soon. Before coding, all stakeholders need to reach agreement on how every fact and dimension table will be defined. Different departments will have their own definitions of similar fields in their databases, and these must be harmonized.The owner of each data source and the owners of the data warehouse need to agree on who does which part of the ETL process, how, and on what schedule. And so forth. One chapter lists 38 specific questions that absolutely need to be answered before building a data warehouse; in the authors' experience skipping any of these questions ALWAYS costs more in the long run than answering that question at the outset.

Very good overview!

I've enjoyed reading the Kimball Group's design tips on their site for years. As a wonderful parting shot before retiring the group, all those nuggets have been collected and conformed into this wonderful anthology. The last chapter is particularly rewarding to read, as it consists of one final article from each of the four surviving members. They don't disappoint!

It's a Kimball book. They are always amazing.

One of the best books written on dimensional modeling! The tips and techniques provided will help you, you just need to put them into practice.
