I was pleased to see the new complete translation of Picatrix by Dan Attrell and David Porreca released in the Magic in History Series of Penn State Press. Picatrix is central to European astrological magic that it deserves an academic treatment. In addition, the willingness of Penn State Press to release a complete translation of Picatrix shows how things have changed in the past decade and the yeoman work done by mages such as Austin Coppock, Alexander Cummins and Cliff Low to delve deeply into astrological magic.As the translators point out at page 2 this version of Picatrix is, "specifically intended for students and scholars of the history of science and magic" In addition to the complete text of the Latin Picatrix in English translation the translators provide useful historical accounts of the pre-history of Picatrix and of the Latin text, Picatrix's exposition of the path of the sage, the use of the terminology nigromancia for astrological magic and the cosmology of Picatrix. Most interesting is a statistical breakdown of the types of magic in Picatrix. Finally, the translators elucidate their view of the importance of psychoactive drugs in ritual, though the translators insist at page 28 that they do not, "wish to suggest that all magic in the Picatrix can be explained away as drug addled delusion…"Coming as it does from an academic perspective, focused on history and social science the Attrell and Porreca translation provides a valuable orientation and background for the contemporary practitioner of astrological magic. No single translation can do justice to a work as complex as Picatrix and anyone who is serious about astrological magic or interested in Picatrix should certainly get a copy of the Attrell and Porreca translation as well as the Greer and Warnock Picatrix and the forthcoming Arabic Picatrix translation.

Excellent book, with a complete introduction that covers different points of view of the creation of such work of art, it can be seen that it was translated with a team of high academic preparation and knowledge on the subject. It was translated with a lot of precision, respect, professionalism and with much seriousness to the subject. The book is made with high quality and its pages are quite thick. The only mistake that I could notice and it is difficult for me not to be upset, is that they created the index and left out the chapters of each book. For me it is a gross error in comparison with other versions. It's the reason why I could not give 5 stars.

A really informative book. This was a great resource for me when epilepsy first became a part of our lives. Written in simple terms that are easy to understand and works as a good reference tool when trying to access new-to-you information. The author is one of the doctors at the practice we go to as well and is a really well known expert in the epilepsy field.

Amazon has a number of books about epilepsy, but I chose this one because it was pertinent to an adult just beginning to learn about the disease. I sent this book to my 30-year old grandson who has been diagnosed with epilepsy recently. He reports that with the clear and well-organized information in this book, he now can engage his neurologist in intelligent questions and conversations. The learning provided by this book has removed a lot of his initial panic and stress. Because the doctor now knows that his patient is knowledgeable, he spends more time discussing the details of the disease with him.

For anyone with epilepsy this is a treasure trove of information they are unlikely to have gleaned in such detail even from the most helpful of medical practitioners. The book addresses all aspects of epilepsy - types, possible causes, social impacts, medications, possible surgeries - in language that can be understood by all but without dumbing-down. It is written for the USA, but was easily adaptable for us in Australia. Indispensable.

Nowhere does the ambivalence of the minority culture toward the mainstream show itself more strongly than in the arts. In this densely academic work, Mu?oz (performance studies, NYU's Tisch Sch. of the Arts) posits this ambivalence as an essential tool of performance artists in their reaction to and relation to a mainstream culture that often rejects them. Through a process that Mu?oz terms "disidentification," artists, especially those within sexual and racial minorities, hold a distorted mirror to that culture through such techniques as camp and drag, lampoon, social satire, and outrageousness. By turning the dominant culture on its head, these performers call the emperor on his new clothes, revealing a white heterosexist society intolerant if not downright violent toward dissenting voices. Whether you're a gender studies student or just interested in learning more about queer theory, I really recommend Disidentifications. To get the most of out Munoz' text, I suggest reading about Julie Kristeva's concepts of abjection. This will help you better understand the concept of disidentification, which can be initially very confusing and elusive within the beginning pages of the book. If you're stuck looking for a clear definition in the book's introduction, don't feel frustrated! Keep reading, as I think Munoz deliberately avoids laying out his concept in broad daylight.The book is a welcomed relief from dense and confusing theory alla Eve Kosofky Sedgewick, Michel Foucault and Gayle Rubin. Munoz writes clearly and not in the confusing manner that some academics use. This doesn't mean his ideas are simple - they are anything but!Sometimes it's easy to be frustrated with queer theory texts because they don't always provide solutions for the problems they talk about. However, this book has lots of potential for real-life application in the queer community. Most optimistically, disidentification can save lives and be an agent of cultural change. Speaking from an American perspective, our culture is becoming more accepting, but there are some places or environments that are still very hostile towards queer bodies and people. Drawing from intersectionality, cross-identification and abjection, Munoz outlines disidentifications as a political and survival especially useful for queers of color, or queers with multiple minoritized identities (i.e. poor and trans and gay).Finally, people dissatisfied with the mainstream LGBTQ movement and its assimilation-like tactics may also find this book useful and/or relevant. Give the book a chance, and even if you think Munoz writes some of the introduction with questionable intentions, you will find something useful or at the very least interesting within Disidentifications. Like other reviewers, I think Disidentifications will eventually become a cornerstone of queer theory canon. Read this!

This book powerfully interweaves theory with examples in real life and observations of aesthetic practices. It is a stunning book with a breathtaking sense of writing style.

The idea I have taken from this book that I still use is the way we can misread people (and other things) purposefully: how Bette David can be treated by Black women *as* a Black woman. I don't think Muñoz's developments hold together but there's plenty of interesting stuff to make this worthwhile.

For those of us who have been starving since finishing Mercer's 'Welcome to the Jungle' or Fusco's 'English Is Broken Here', this is an excellent book to add to your reading list. Through complex theory and deep analysis, Munoz effectively articulates what many of us know but have difficulty proving to others: lesbian and gay artists of color are producing some of the nation's and the world's most revolutionary and counterhegemonic work. I am especially impressed that he examines work by Black, Latino, and Asian gays. This is a much-needed book for anyone who would like to see people of color come together in coalition. You will be impressed with Munoz's creation. This is not Hemphill's 'Brother to Brother' or Moraga's 'This Bridge Called My Back.' Some readers will be put off by the semiotic language Munoz uses. However, for those who can get through it, you will enjoy this book.

Simply put, this contribution to performance studies lacks any theory of the audience. The book is eager to explicate the subversive meanings subtending the work of various artists, but the interpretations require something more than a completely essentialized and abstracted characterization of the audience as a homogeneous unit that can be assumed, without further analysis, to share whatever meanings the author ascribes to the works under consideration. This book is good, but because it covers a wide range, the detail of each model is less than in some of the 'original' series.

I'm in the process of restoring a 1947 Bentley Mark VI and this book has been very helpful in details about the car that I have not seen elsewhere. The pictures are outstanding quality, and although it is not intended to be an A to Z restoration book, it is very informative historically.

I am by no means a collector of RR / Bentley cars, but I am looking to get an S-1 or S-2, and I found this book a source of info to at least know what should be found on a properly maintained car, and what would have been non-stock modifications.

Wonderful resource for owners. Now I better understand the design and features of the R-Type.

This a nice RR book with lots of production data and the updates throughout the model years. But NOT as a restorers guide? There is absolutely not a single word in it on how to restore this car. It's a waste of money to purchase this book for restoration purposes. It's a nice coffee table book that's all.
