Published for information and education purposes. Nice goal. For me it didn't quite hit the mark.Needs editing. Word tense incorrect. Sentence structure could be improved.As a long ago former Unix power User, thought I'd brush up on shell programming. Thought this might provide a quick refresher. Half way through book switched to an old shell programming book from my book shelf and reverted to the man pages found them more useful.
This book is so poorly written that I gave up on it. I spent more time tying to decipher what was written and not the content that I found it a complete waste of time.So much so, that I have no idea if the content was valid.
Nice book. Simple introduction as advertised no deep insights but a great primer of review.
If you are a complete newby to UNIX/LINUX then it will be useful as a basic primer. As far as more advanced training, not very useful for above that level.
Quick and easy.
This, and numerous of the other Wagmob titles I've read on Kindle are an amazing new addition to your Kindle library. They are very well done for .99 and are often upwards of 200 pages as is this title. They are both set up for seamless inline citations and have minimal issues with slaughtering LaTex and illustrations as with many ereader titles.For the price, there is a TON of information. This book starts at the basics but quickly goes into key details in shells, unix and programming in general. Adding the O/S book gives a great, very current look at sytems, tips and techniques, from advanced High School to graduate Engineering tricks, tips and techniques. VERY well written, not some Wiki hack rip off as you see with some cheap ebooks.But the best point is that the publisher not only gives extensive contents in the description, but also allows the wonderful Amazon look inside feature-- you can literally REALLY see what you're getting before you invest that .99c! Talk about a confident publisher! You and I both know there are Springer titles on these topics that won't let you look inside before spending 200 bucks... Wagmob's "open source" and open review attitude is the best proof of all that they are confident in their writers. Rip off hacks wouldn't dare let you look inside, let alone give as detailed content descriptions as these folks do. This is the kind of confidence we all need when navigating the jungle of online purchases often "sight unseen."As you can see from the lookie liu and contents, the pedagogy follows a "memory tickler" format, much like summary flash cards. These titles are expected to be review helpers and learning ponies-- you study the material in more depth online and in many other places, and these little gems summarize how it all fits together in design pattern like nuggets. Other reviews have dinged the instructional design and didactics as too big, too small and not quite just right, but this depends on your goals. If you're studying chords in piano, you need texts, practice and theory, but little summary flash cards will help you refresh that learning as well as embed it more clearly and deeply in memory as you use it. If you want to use these as primary study tools, you'll need to augment with textual or online glossaries, because the terms are not fully fleshed out (obviously, this would take a 700 page book!).Welcome to the Wagmob phenomenon if this is your first encounter!
